It was just a small, white envelpe with a nte f what I had dne, stuck amng the branches f ur Christmas tree. It all began because my husband Mike hated Christmas. Oh, nt the true meaning f Christmas, but the cmmercial aspects f it, verspending, the gifts given in desperatin because yu culdn’t think f anything else.
Knwing he felt this way, I decided ne year t bypass (避開) the usual shirts, sweaters, ties and s n. I tried t find a special present just fr Mike. The inspiratin came in an unusual way.
Our sn, Kevin, wh was 12 that year, was wrestling at the junir level at the schl he attended, and shrtly befre Christmas, there was a nn-league match against a team Spnsred by an inner-city church.
These yungsters, dressed in sneakers s ragged (襤褸的) that shes seemed t be the nly thing hlding them tgether, presented a sharp cntrast t ur bys in the spiffy blue and gld unifrms and sparkling new wrestling hes. As the match began I was alarmed t see that the ther team was wrestling withut headgear, a kind f light helmet designed t prtect a wrestler’s cars. It was a luxury the ragged team bviusly culd nt affrd. Well, we ended up defeating them. We tk every weight class.
Mike, seated beside me, shk his head sadly, “I wish ne f them culd have wn,” he said. They have a lt f ptential, but lsing like this culd take the heart right ut f them.”Mike lved kids, all kids, and he knew them, having cached little league ftball, baseball and lacrsse.

That’s when the idea fr his present came. That afternn, I went t a lcal sprting gds stre and bught an assrtment f wrestling headgear and shes and sent them annymusly t the inner-city church. On Christmas Eve, I placed the envelpe n the tree, the nte inside telling Mike what I had dne and that this was his gift frm me. His smile was the brightest thing abut Christmas that year and in succeeding years.
Feeling their dad’s happiness, my children jined me. Each f ur children, unbeknwnst t the thers, had placed an envelpe n the tree fr their dad. The traditin has grwn and smeday will expand even further with ur grandchildren standing arund the tree with wide-eyed anticipatin watching as their fathers take dwn the envelpe.
