I. Teaching Objectives:
1. Knwledge Objectives:
(1)Recgnize and practice the prnunciatin f the tw key vwel sunds:
/?/ (shrt) and /i:/ (lng).
(2)Identify the difference in sund quality and muth psitin between /?/
and /i:/ in varius wrds.
2. Skills Objectives:
(1)Listening: Discriminate between the /?/ and /i:/ sunds in different
wrds.
(2)Speaking: Imprve prnunciatin by repeating wrds and sentences
cntaining /?/ and /i:/ sunds.
3. Affective Objectives:
(1)Develp students’ cnfidence in speaking English by practicing
crrect prnunciatin.
(2)Fster a psitive attitude twards learning phnetics and imprving
speaking skills.
II. Teaching Prcedures:
Step1.Warm-up (5 minutes):
(1)Greet the class and ask: “Hw d yu keep fit?” and “What sprts d
yu like?” t warm up and set the theme f the lessn.
(2)Tell students that tday’s lessn fcuses n prnunciatin, specifically
the sunds /?/ and /i:/.
(3)Shw a cuple f pictures f peple exercising t cnnect the theme f
"keeping fit" with the cntent f the lessn.
Step2. Intrductin t Target Sunds (10 minutes):
1. Explain the sunds /?/ and /i:/:
/?/: A shrt vwel sund fund in wrds like sit, lip, fish. The tngue is
psitined lw and relaxed in the muth.
/i:/: A lng vwel sund fund in wrds like seat, she, beat. The tngue
is higher and the lips are spread.
2. Demnstrate the prnunciatin f bth sunds:
Fr /?/: Say the wrd “sit” slwly, emphasizing the shrt sund. Explain
that the muth is nt very pen, and the tngue is placed twards the
frnt but lwer in the muth.
Fr /i:/: Say the wrd “seat” slwly, emphasizing the lng sund. Explain
that the tngue is higher in the muth and the lips are spread.
3. Visual Supprt: Draw a simple diagram f the muth and tngue
psitin n the whitebard t visually reinfrce the difference between
the tw sunds.
4. Chral Repetitin: After demnstrating the sunds, have students
repeat bth sunds and wrds after yu several times, fcusing n
accuracy.
5. Prnunciatin Practice (12 minutes):
(1) Pair Practice
Present pairs f wrds that cntrast the tw sunds:
- sit / seat
- fish / she
- lip / leap
- sick / seek
- hit / heat
(2)Write these pairs n the bard and say them alud clearly.
(3)Have students repeat the wrds after yu in chrus and then
individually.
(4)Fcus n getting the crrect sund in each wrd.
Step 3: Wrd Drill
Using the flashcards, say the wrds with bth sunds and have students
repeat after yu. Prvide feedback and crrectin n any
misprnunciatins.
Example wrds t use:
- Fr /?/: sit, hit, lip, sick, fish
- Fr /i:/: seat, beat, she, eat, team
Step 4: Sentence Practice
1. Give students sample sentences that cntain bth sunds.
Examples:
- "I sit n the seat."
- "She eats fish fr lunch."
2. Have students repeat each sentence after yu, fcusing n crrectly
prnuncing the target sunds.
Step 5. Listening and Identificatin (8 minutes):
1. Listening Exercise: Play an audi recrding r read a passage that
includes a mix f /?/ and /i:/ sunds. Students shuld listen and identify
the wrds with the target sunds.
2. After listening, ask students:
- Which wrds had the /?/ sund?
- Which wrds had the /i:/ sund?
Step6. Interactive Prnunciatin Game (5 minutes):
Game: Sund Detective
- Write a list f mixed /?/ and /i:/ wrds n the bard (e.g., sit, seat,
lip, leap, fish, she).
- Prnunce the wrds ne by ne, and students need t raise their
hands when they hear a wrd with the target sund.
- Ask individual students t repeat the wrds t check their
prnunciatin.
Step7. Assignment (3 minutes):
1. Ask students t write five sentences using wrds with /?/ and /i:/ sunds.
2. Encurage them t practice reading the sentences alud t a family
member r friend.
Optinally, prvide a wrksheet with additinal practice n identifying
and prnuncing the target sunds.
