I was sitting at my desk when anther graduate student in my lab apprached me. “Can yu help?” he asked. His experiment wasn’t wrking and he desperately needed help. I was then a fifth year PhD student, and I tk pride in being the senir member f the lab, whm everyne lked up t. But that als meant I was the ne everyne turned t fr help - which ate away hurs, days, and smetimes weeks that I culd have spent n my wn research.
There were many reasns I had a hard time saying n t such pleas(懇求). I was new t the United States fr graduate schl. I fund it difficult t make new friends and discver activities I enjyed. S I spent a huge chunk f my time in the lab, with my lab-mates serving as my primary surce f scial cnnectin. I feared that if I brushed them ff, I’d lse their favr.
But the extra respnsibilities came at a cst. I had t wrk extra hurs t catch up with my wn wrk, and I ften made sacrifices t my persnal life.
It wasn’t until my wife gave birth t ur first child that I realized hw thin I had stretched myself, and hw misguided my pririties were. While she lay in a hspital bed in the early stages f labr, I sat nearby hunched(伏首前傾的)ver my laptp finishing up a wrk reprt hurs later, after hearing my daughter’s first cry and watching her tiny fingers grab tightly nt mine, it dawned n me: I shuld have been fully present during my daughter’s birth. Frm then n, I decided t spend mre time with my family by paring dwn my wrk tasks and carefully cnsidering each request fr help. I still enjyed cllabrating with thers, but I priritized mutually beneficial tasks r thse my manager asked me t take n, rather than accepting everything that came my way.
I nticed many benefits: n lnger wrking vertime, mre family time, and imprved wrk perfrmance. I was als pleased t discver that “Srry, I’d lve t help but I have a deadline cming up” is an acceptable respnse t a request fr assistance.
It’s hard t say “n” t thse yu wrk with. But I’ve learned that smetimes that’s the best curse f actin t avid an excessive wrklad and lead a freer and happier life.

Hw ften is yur mind quiet? If yu’re a typical human being, the answer is prbably very rarely. Fr mst f ur days, ur attentin is fcused n external things—the tasks f ur jbs, TV prgrams, r scial media interactins. In the mments when ur attentin isn’t fcused externally, it’s usually fcused n what is called “thught-chatter”—a stream f mental assciatins cnsisting f expectatins f the future, memries, daydreams, and s n.
But frm time t time, we all experience mments when ur thught-chatter quiets dwn, r even disappears altgether. In these mments, we experience a sense f great well-being. We feel a sense f inner harmny. We feel as if we’re free f prblems, and feel satisfied with ur lives as they are.
There are many activities that have the effect f quieting ur minds, and s prduce a state f well-being.
Fr example, think abut what happens when yu g walking in the cuntryside. Yu might feel stressed when yu start ut, but slwly, after a cuple f miles, yur mind begins t settle dwn. The beauty and stillness f nature attracts yur attentin and yu’re n lnger in yur thught-chatter. By the end f the walk yu feel almst like a different persn. Yu feel mre alive, and much happier—largely because yur mind is nw quiet.
This is why peple lve t lk at beautiful wrks f art. When peple see the paintings f Mnet r van Ggh, they experience a mind-stpping mment, in which they’re taken ut f their thinking minds and experience a sense f great well-being.
The strange thing is, thugh, that mst f the time this happens uncnsciusly (不知不覺(jué)地). We usually dn’t assciate this well-being with a quiet mind. And we usually dn’t think f a quiet mind as the aim r result f these activities.
Our estimate f hw enjyable an activity is may depend n its mind-stpping capacity. In ther wrds, the very best perfrmances—and the mst rewarding activities—are thse which are s attractive and intense that they can cmpletely stp ur minds.
I’m nt saying that inner quietness is the nly reasn why we enjy these activities. Nevertheless, we shuld certainly becme mre aware f the assciatin f a quiet mind with well-being. And at the same time we shuld be aware that it’s pssible fr us t cnsciusly and directly create a quiet mind; rather than as a byprduct f certain activities. And in the end we might develp a permanent quiet mind and attain a state f nging cntentment and harmny.
28.What can be inferred abut thught-chatter?
A.It requires a lt f practice.
B.It might be unpleasant at times.
C.It might be a talk with a friend.
D.It helps reach a state f silence.
29.What are the examples f activities mentined in the text mainly abut?
A.What activities lead t well-being.
B.What can be dne t reduce stress.
C.Hw we can make ur minds quiet.
D.Hw mental quietness leads t well-being.
30.Hw can we determine hw much pleasure an activity can give us?
A.By judging hw much stress it can increase.
B.By judging whether it takes place uncnsciusly.
C.By judging t what extent it can quiet ur minds.
D.By judging whether it assciates with well-being.
31.What des the authr intend t highlight in the last paragraph?
A.Creating a quiet mind fr all time.
B.Living a peaceful life permanently.
C.Being in harmny with inner quietness.
D.Participating in activities fr inner quietness.

The argument ver vide games has been nging fr decades. While sme argue that e-sprts require skill, there is disagreement ver whether they meet the standards f a traditinal sprt. Accrding t the dictinary, a sprt is a physical activity fr pleasure. While playing vide games requires skill and crdinatin (協(xié)調(diào)), it lacks the physicality assciated with traditinal sprts. Strategy is als present in bard games like chess r card games like slitaire, but these activities are nt classified as sprts. Similarly, playing a musical instrument requires practice and training, yet it is nt cnsidered a sprt.
Sprts require full-bdy mvements and crdinatin while vide games mainly invlve finger and hand mvements. Althugh it is pssible t include physical mvement while playing, it is nt a requirement fr success. Many e-sprts enthusiasts sit in frnt f their screens, filling themselves with snacks while cntrlling the game. This lack f physicality nt nly sets vide games apart frm sprts but can als have negative effects n health. Unlike traditinal sprts, which have been shwn t imprve well-being, t much vide gaming can lead t headaches and anger.
While e-sprts and cmpetitive gaming may be cmparable t activities like chess in terms f cmpetitin, they d nt pssess the physical effrt and health benefits assciated with traditinal sprts. Hwever, as the industry cntinues t develp, the idea f e-sprts is evlving. Studies have stressed the demanding mtr skills and reactin times required in e-sprts. Prfessr Ing Frbse cnducted a study that demnstrated the impressive mtr skills f e-sprts “athletes”, with up t 400 mvements per minute n the keybard and muse. The strategic aspect f e-sprts, including team planning, is als ften ignred. Games such as League f Legends, Dta 2, and Hnr f Kings have attracted large audiences and shwed the skills f players.
While sme argue against the classificatin (分類) f e-sprts as real sprts, evidence suggests that they pssess unique skills and abilities. As the industry grws, the understanding and recgnitin f e-sprts as a lawful cmpetitive activity are gradually changing.
32.Why dn’t sme peple think f vide games as a sprt?
A.They lack full-bdy mvements.B.They stress teamwrk mstly.
C.They have n influence n health.D.They require n strategy and training.
33.What will be a result f playing vide games t much accrding t the text?
A.Better relatinship with friends.B.Bad perfrmance in study.
C.Pr health cnditin.D.Lack f crdinatin.
34.Which supprts the classificatin f e-sprts as real sprts?
A.The fast develpment f traditinal sprts.
B.The benefits fr health brught by vide gaming.
C.The cmparisn f e-sprts t chess.
D.The strategic aspect invlved in e-sprts.
35.Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
A.D e-sprts require teamwrk and skills?
B.Shuld vide games be cnsidered a sprt?
C.D e-sprts have negative effects n health?
