New research suggests yung children dn’t seek help in schl, even when they need it. Our research suggests that children begin t cnnect asking fr help with lking incmpetent in frnt f thers. Their cncern abut reputatin may have significant cnsequences, particularly when it cmes t educatin. If they are afraid t ask fr help because their classmates are watching, learning will suffer.
T learn mre abut hw children think abut reputatin, we applied a classic technique frm develpmental psychlgy. We crafted simple stries and then asked children questins abut these scenaris (設(shè)想) t allw kids t shwcase their thinking.
Acrss several studies, we asked 576 children, ages fur t nine, t predict the behavir f tw kids in a stry. One f the characters genuinely wanted t be smart, and the ther merely wanted t seem smart t thers. In ne study, we tld children that bth kids did prly n a test. We then asked which f these characters wuld be mre likely t raise their hand in frnt f their class t ask the teacher fr help.
The fur-year-lds were equally likely t chse either f the tw kids as the ne wh wuld seek help. But by age seven r eight, children thught that the kid wh wanted t seem smart wuld be less likely t ask fr assistance. They were specifically thinking abut hw the characters wuld act in frnt f peers. They culd still imagine situatins in which the kid wh wanted t seem smart wuld seek help: when assistance culd be sught privately (n a cmputer rather than in persn), children thught bth characters were equally likely t ask fr it.
Given ur findings, it seems quite pssible that when children themselves are the nes struggling, they, t, might avid seeking ut help if they are cncerned abut reputatin. If s, this reluctance t seek help when thers are present culd seriusly slw academic prgress.
Hw can we help children vercme these barriers? Teachers culd give children mre pprtunities t seek assistance privately. They shuld als help students perceive asking questins in frnt f thers as nrmal, psitive

When in fifth grade, I had a big dream: I wanted t win the schl’s Science Fair. The prize was a shiny gld medal, and every year, students frm all the grades wuld gather in the gym t see wh the winners were. I didn’t think t much abut hw t make it happen — I just wanted t win.
Hwever, there was a prblem. I didn’t really have an idea fr my prject. I wasn’t sure what wuld be impressive enugh t win, s I came up with a quick slutin: I’d build a rcket. Rckets seemed cl, and I assumed if I made ne that lked awesme, that shuld be enugh.
S, I went t the stre with my mm and grabbed a bunch f supplies: cardbard tubes, glue, markers, and glitter (閃光裝飾物). My plan was simple — make the rcket lk amazing, and everyne wuld be impressed. I didn’t bther learning hw rckets wrked, and I didn’t think abut running tests. I figured if it lked gd, that wuld be all I needed t win.
Fr the next few days, I wrked hard n making my rcket shine. I glued the cardbard tgether, added fins t the sides, and cvered the whle thing in glitter. It sparkled under the light, and I thught t myself, “This has t be enugh.” But at the back f my mind, I knew, the Science Fair was suppsed t be abut learning and shwing smething scientific. Still, I ignred that feeling.
As the Science Fair apprached, I spent all my time n my rcket’s lk. I didn’t d any research, didn’t learn abut thrust r fuel, and definitely didn’t test anything. I cnvinced myself that wuld be enugh.

hadn’t prepared fr that questin. “Uh…well, it’s a rcket,” I stammered. “It lks really cl and, um, shiny.” The judges raised their eyebrws. One f them asked, “Did yu test it t see if it culd fly? Deep dwn, I knew I hadn’t really tried.
When the awards were annunced, my name wasn’t called. I didn’t win anything. My rcket, with all its glitter and shine, wasn’t enugh. It wasn’t abut hw gd it lked; it was abut the effrt and care that went int the prject. I realized then that nthing’s enugh if yu dn’t care enugh t d it well. The next year, when the Science Fair came arund again, I made sure my prject wasn’t just cl t lk at. I researched, I tested, and I cared abut what I was ding. I didn’t win the gld medal, but I knew I had dne my best. And that felt like a victry all n its wn.
