I lved t argue. My fixatin n being right had been a mainstay in my life and had ften stirred up truble in my family; there were mments when my marriage became strained and my kids grew distant. The lngest fight I had was with my parents, and it dragged n fr nearly a year.
My habit seemed immrtal. Until an afternn with my granddaughter pened my eyes t the impact my behaviur was having n the peple arund me. We were playing a bard game when she made a mve that brke the rules. I crrected her, but she ended up making the same mistake again. I read the rules ut lud and asked if she gt it this time. She smiled at me and shk her head. “Grandpa, why are yu s stubbrn?” she asked. “It’s just a game. We’ re here t have fun, aren’t we?” Smething abut her wrds really hit hme. We weren’t there t be right, we were there t enjy urselves — hw t mve the pieces was merely a backdrp. What truly mattered was ur bnd and the mments we shared.
A few days later, my sn came ver fr dinner. During the meal, he shared a viewpint that struck me as baseless. Typically, I wuld have launched myself headfirst int a heated debate with him. But this time, as I parted my lips t respnd, I fund myself ppping a frkful f pie int my muth instead, enjying it quietly. My tlerance surprised me, but what really tk my breath away as I listened t him was a newfund desire t understand him. This experience brught me a jy that far surpassed (超出) the fleeting satisfactin f winning an argument.
In hindsight (事后想), my drive t win hadn’t really been abut seeking the truth, but abut shwing I was better than everyne else. By letting g, I gained way mre than I ever did by pushing back. Nw I recgnise that arguing at the dinner table is much like deciding t drink an extra cup f cffee. It is a matter f self-discipline. I had always understd this cncept in thery, but it tk a seven-year-ld’s interventin fr me t apply it.

When caught in the rain, we have all run fr cver—ften t a nearby tree. On the way, we step ver shrt-lived puddles and hastily frmed streams, marveling at hw quickly the sil changes frm supprtive and predictable t untrustwrthy: slippery, sft, and spngy. At the first chance we tend t flee, skipping further bservatin.
Given that direct bservatins are ften unfeasible, remte bservatin systems are crucial in capturing phenmena that are frequent and unpredictable. Hwever, the Bimbache cmmunity f El Hierr bserved water running dwn tree bark during fg events and captured it fr drinking, washing and agriculture. If mre cntemprary hydrlgists (水文學(xué)家) had watched the raking f fg by trees, frest managers may nt have lgged the Bull Run Watershed, which reduced lcal rainfall by 30%.
Water science faces criticism because f “techn-ptimism that tries t slve all prblems despite nt asking fundamental questins”. In fact, this issue extends beynd water science. An interdisciplinary research team led by Jhn Van Stan frm Cleveland State University argues that scientists shuld g beynd the labratry t directly bserve weather phenmena. The researchers insist that hands-n bservatin f strm events is crucial in cmprehending the cmplexities f wet weather.
“Natural scientists seem increasingly cntent t stay dry and rely n remte sensrs and samplers, mdels, and virtual experiments t understand natural systems. Cnsequently, we can miss imprtant strmy phenmena, imaginative inspiratin, and pprtunities t build intuitin—all f which are critical t scientific prgress,” said Van Stan’s team.
This type f “umbrella science”, they warn, can miss imprtant lcalized events. Fr instance, in describing rainwater’s flw frm the frest treetps t the sils, the authrs nte that “if several branches efficiently capture and carry strm water t the stem, rainwater inputs t near-stem sils can be mre than 100 times greater”. Likewise, water vapr (水蒸氣) cluds trapped beneath frest treetp cvers may escape remte detectin, yet be sensitive t scientists n the grund. On a brader level, these versights can affect grund Earth system mdels, which ften underestimate frest treetp water strage.
Direct bservatin, hwever, has gne beynd making up fr the shrtcmings f “umbrella science”. Van Stan and clleagues see cre value in first-hand strm experiences—nt nly fr natural scientists, but als students studying the impacts f climate change n ecsystems.
28.Hw d peple tend t react t rain?
A.In a defensive manner.B.In a scientific manner.
C.With a wait-and-see attitude.D.With an bservatin-riented attitude.
29.Which f the fllwing wrds can replace the underlined wrd in paragraph 2?
A.Implite.B.Impssible.C.Incnvenient.D.Illgical.
30.What des Van Stan’s research team argue in terms f hands-n bservatin?
A.It is effrtless and precise.B.It is virtual and accepted.
C.It is cmplex yet time-saving.D.It is crucial yet verlked.
31. What is the text?
A. A news reprt.
B. A research paper.
C. An argumentative essay.
D. A descriptive passage.

As mre and mre species near extinctin, scientists have been cllecting samples frm animals, plants and ther creatures and string them in bibanks acrss the glbe. But climate change, envirnmental disasters and wars threaten these mdern Nah’s arks. Nw, a team f researchers is brainstrming an ut-f-this-wrld slutin: building ne f these vaults (庫(kù)) n the mn.
A bibank in a permanently shadwed regin at the mn’s suth ple culd be far mre stable than thse n Earth. This part f the mn usually remains arund -196° Celsius, perfect fr string mst animal cells lng-term, marine bilgist Mary Hagedrn and clleagues reprt in BiScience.
Hagedrn and clleagues drew inspiratin frm the Svalbard Glbal Seed Vault in Nrway which takes advantage f belw-zer Arctic temperatures t preserve millins f seeds frm arund the wrld. In 2017, melting (融化) frzen sil threatened t fld the vault, highlighting the need fr a backup plan. A different team has prpsed building a lunar ark in lava (熔巖) tubes that run beneath the mn’s surface. But that design requires a slar-pwered cling system; any lss f pwer and the samples wuld be destryed. In the mn’s frever-frzen shadwed regins, a lunar vault wuldn’t need energy r cnstant human maintenance, Hagedrn’s team says.
Given the shadwy suth ple’s lw temperatures, Hagedrn says, a vault there culd stre “ne f the mst pwerful cells that we have tday” — fibrblasts. Scientists can transfrm these animal cells int stem cells, “and then thse stem cells can be used fr clning,” she says. The cells culd be valuable fr regenerating ppulatins f threatened r extinct species and fr building ecsystems in future human settlements n the mn r Mars.
The prpsal has its share f barriers. Fr instance, the mn’s permanently dark regins aren’t free frm temperature swings, says lunar scientist Benjamin Greenhagen f the Jhns Hpkins University. “They are still cld but perhaps nt always cld enugh fr this prject withut sme level f temperature management.”
32.Why is the mn an ideal place fr the bibank?
A.It’s nt affected by wars.B.It’s nt envirnmentally plluted.
C.It has prper temperatures.D.It has rich resurces fr research.
33.What led t Hagedrn’s prpsal f a lunar bibank?
A.The slar-pwered cling system.B.The lava tubes n the mn’s surface.
C.The prblem facing the Nrway Vault.D.The discvery f ice n the lunar ple.
34.What can scientists use fibrblasts t d?
A.Frm stem cells fr clning.B.Explre mn sil cnditins.
C.Help land humans n the mn.D.Imprve the ec-system f the earth.
35.What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A.Lunar Explratin: The Next Frntier fr Clning
B.Relieving Climate Change: The Mn Bibank Prject
C.The Mn as a Backup: A New Slutin fr Seed Strage
D.Building Bibanks n the Mn: A Prpsal t Save Bidiversity

Smetimes yu may feel like privacy, as a cncept, has disappeared frm the wrld. 36 Thus they can serve up frighteningly accurate ads that make yu think yur phne’s micrphne has been turned n and marketers are actively listening t yur every wrd.
They’re nt— yet. But they are engaged in smething called “datamining”. This is the prcess f cllecting enrmus amunts f unknwn data frm yur every cnnected activity and then analyzing that data t fill yur life with advertisements and ther influences. Datamining gives away yur privacy. Yu may find it quite impssible t avid. 37

A.Be “bring” n scial media.
B.Mind yur cmments n scial media.

It was my inaugural year as an educatr in a special needs classrm, and I harbred a degree f uncertainty regarding what t anticipate at ur annual Special Olympics track meet. Despite this, he cnsistently exhibited a psitive dispsitin, greeting everyne each mrning with an expansive smile.
His classmates held him in high regard and made a cncerted effrt t ensure his inclusin in grup activities. This was particularly evident with Mike, Andy, and Lucas, three bys wh excelled in sprts. In my heart, I knew Mark aspired t be like them, unencumbered by the physical limitatins that bund him, and the grace with which they navigated the playing field seemed t captivate him with a sense f wnder. He never missed their cmpetitins and was always their mst ardent supprter. Witnessing Mike, Andy, and Lucas crss the finish line, Mark’s excitement was palpable.
On the day f the track and field event, Mike, Andy, and Lucas perfrmed admirably in their heats, prviding the typically tranquil crwd with ample reasn t cheer. The culminating event f the day was the 400-meter race, in which everyne was invited t participate, either by walking r running, accrding t their capabilities, arund the entire circumference f the track. We bserved as the sprinters launched int actin — Mike, Andy, and Lucas, each intent n demnstrating their athletic prwess.
Hwever, as the tri f exhausted runners reached the finish line, they paused and turned t survey the scene behind them. At the rear f the crwd, reslutely determined nt t be left behind, was Mark. His classmates had already surpassed him, and even the slwest walkers were utpacing him.
