Scientists have created a new tl that can knw what yu mean. It wrks by using an Artificial Intelligence (AI) prgram t translate brain activity int wrds. Scientists say the prgram culd help peple wh can’t speak because f a brain injury.
T recrd brain activity withut surgery, scientists used an fMRI machine, which can recrd the activity f the brain as it happens. T translate these recrdings int wrds, scientists used an Al tl called GPT-l that predicts which wrd is mst likely t cme next, based n the infrmatin that came befre. Scientists first trained GPT-1 n lts f stries peple had tld abut their lives. Next, they trained GPT-1 t make cnnectins between brain scans and spken wrds. The testing was dne n three human vlunteers. Each persn spent sixteen hurs in an fMRI machine listening t stries. The machine created pictures shwing which parts f their brain were active. GPT-1 then used these recrdings t make cnnectins between the idea s in the stries and the brain activity f the listeners.
Then came the test. The scientists played a brand new stry. GPT-I was nly given recrdings f the peple’s brain activity. But the wrds that GPT-1 predicted were very similar t the wrds in the stry that the peple were listening t. The wrds weren’t exactly the same, but they ften carried the same meaning.
Fr example, when a persn was listening t a stry abut a persn wh didn’t have a driver’s license, the prgram came up with this, “She has nt even started t learn t drive yet.”
The scientists say that GPT-1 is the first AI prgram t turn what peple are thinking int wrds withut brain surgery. The system isn’t smething that is available utside the lab tday, mainly because f the size and cst f fMRI machines. But in the future, a similar methd culd help peple wh have lst the ability t speak because f an injury r disease.

Plants can ften tell when they’re in danger — by smell. But nt all leaves sniff ut threats equally well. In crn plants, baby leaves d this best, new data shw.
“They recgnize that danger is arund the crner,” says Lei Wang. He’s a plant bilgist at the University f Bern in Switzerland. He and his clleagues shared the new findings in Current Bilgy.
Many plants are knwn t beef up their chemical defenses when they’ re abut t get bitten by insects. One way plants sense such threats is thrugh smell. They can detect smell mlecules flating thrugh the air. Thse mlecules may spread frm an insect’s saliva (唾液). Or they may cme frm neighbring plants that have already been attacked and are n death’s dr.
Originally, Wang and his team set ut t identify airbrne chemicals that plants receive as warning scents. But when they started their study, they fund that the adult crn leaves they tested did nt prduce many anti- predatr chemicals in respnse t the smells.
S the researchers turned t baby leaves. These are much mre fragile than the adult leaves that scientists usually study. In the lab, the team expsed yung and adult crn leaves t a cmmn danger-signaling scent. This green-leaf cmpund is similar t the smell f freshly cut grass. A crn plant might encunter this scent if a nearby plant was in danger. The researchers measured hw much danger signal each leaf released in respnse t the warning smell.
New leaves were mre sensitive than adult leaves. Even thugh the adult leaves were wrse at “smelling”, hwever, they did release small amunts f defense chemicals. Other research shws that these leaves can prcess danger signals ther than scent (such as insects munching n them). They can respnd t these attacks, t, by issuing chemicals aimed at tackling the threat.
Wang hpes his research may lead t the breeding f smarter crps — nes mre resistant t insects. In the lng run, that shuld reduce a need fr harmful pesticides.
32.What d the underlined wrds “beef up” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Dismiss.B.Balance.C.Strengthen.D.Overcme.

34.What des Wang hpe t achieve with his research?
A.T reduce the use f pisnus pesticides.B.T imprve the taste f crps.
C.T cultivate mre prfitable plants.D.T create safer pesticides.

根據(jù)第三段“Many plants are knwn t beef up their chemical defenses when they’ re abut t get bitten by insects. One way plants sense such threats is thrugh smell.
根據(jù)第三段“One way plants sense such threats is thrugh smell. They can detect smell mlecules flating thrugh the air. Thse mlecules may spread frm an insect’s saliva
根據(jù)最后一段“Wang hpes his research may lead t the breeding f smart er crps — nes mre resistant t insects. In the lng run, that shuld reduce a need fr harmful pesticides.(王希望他的研究能夠培育出對(duì)昆蟲更具抗性的智能二次作物。 故選A項(xiàng)。
由文章倒數(shù)第二段“New leaves were mre sensitive than adult leaves. Even thugh the adult leaves were wrse at ‘smelling’, hwever, they did release small amunts f defense chemicals. Other research shws that these leaves can prcess danger signals ther than scent (such as insects munching n them). They can respnd t these attacks, t, by issuing chemicals aimed at tackling the threat.(新葉比成年葉更敏感。

故填have been published/were published。
故填that/ which。
故填after。
因?yàn)樯衔摹癈hinese scientists have fund a new plant species(中國(guó)科學(xué)家發(fā)現(xiàn)了一種新的植物物種)”提到過最新發(fā)現(xiàn),再次提到需要特指,所以此處用the discvery特指科學(xué)家們最近發(fā)現(xiàn)的新物種。故填the。

I am the kind f persn wh is shy and desn’t express himself much amng thers. I spend a significant amunt f time n intrspectin (內(nèi)省). I lack the ease t engage in cnversatins with thers. But I find this, n the ther hand, can be an advantage.
Once, as a schl by, I wndered if I, such an intrverted (內(nèi)向的) persn, wuld be cnsidered eccentric (古怪的). And I was even afraid that I culd pssibly get nwhere in my study.
I went t schl, where I was just an average student and struggled with shyness. My parents had high expectatins, hping I wuld finally be able t secure the first psitin at the end f the sixth grade. Hwever, achieving that was n easy jb. Given the keen cmpetitin between classmates and my then situatin, it was challenging t stand ut. I inquired with my friend, Tm, wh cnsistently ranked first, and he revealed that his tw aunts had been helping him, prviding tutring supprt.
Asking fr help was never easy fr me; my shyness stpped me frm seeking assistance. I believed that I had t depend n myself — it was my sle respnsibility t learn and educate myself. This mindset surprisingly ignited (激發(fā)) a race within me t claim the tp psitin in my class. Hwever, I realized there were barriers n my path — several subjects trubled me. And I understd that achieving the first psitin wuld take a cuple f years f hard wrk.

By the fifth grade, wrk n my study was prgressing steadily and imprvement was bvius. Even Tm shwed his surprise r I culd say envy. But I knew my perfrmance in writing still needed imprving. And I knew, thugh withut additinal supprt, I culd cunt n myself.

The jurney cntinued int the sixth grade. I, as usual, wrked independently. And I fund a gd thing. Islated and single-minded, I culd have all my attentin fcused n my study. Evidently, that mattered a lt. I had managed t achieve gd scres in writing and I was well n my way. But that wasn’t enugh t secure the first psitin yet. With the terminal exam appraching, the classrm was just like a cmpetitive arena, all my classmates preparing hard fr the academic battle. This, hwever, further stimulated the race within me. I, n my wn initiative, frmulated strategies t win, reslving nt t let anyne take the first psitin frm me. When finally the exam came, I, exceptinally calm and cnfident, gave it my all.
The day arrived when the headmaster declared the exam results. As I waited, the headmaster began with the tp perfrmers in Grade ne. The tensin grew as each name was called. Eventually, he annunced the first psitin in the sixth grade. It was claimed by ur class. I was nervus. He called MY name. It was ME! The first ne in Grade six! I lived up t my parents’ expectatins! The feeling was indescribable, and I was just in a state f shck and happiness. Teachers and classmates, including Tm, sent me their cngratulatins. Guess hw I reacted then? I shied away and slid back t the classrm. Over time, I have accepted wh I am, fr being intrverted, as it turns ut, can be a facilitatr rather than a killer f my accmplishments.
