Chinese painting, the flwer f Chinese culture, is distinguished by a spirit and an atmsphere all f its wn, entirely different frm Western painting. It is as different frm Western painting as Chinese petry is different frm Western petry. That difference is hard t grasp and express. It has a certain tne and atmsphere, visible in Western painting, but essentially different and achieved by different means. It shws a certain ecnmy f material, marked by the many blank spaces, an idea f cmpsitin determined by its wn harmny and marked by a bldness and freedm f the brush which impresses the nlker in an unfrgettable manner.
Smehw the picture befre us has undergne an inner prcess f transfrmatin in the artists mind, giving us nly a cmpletely satisfying whle, s true t life and yet s different frm it. The design is mre bvius. The artist has presented it t us nly as appears t him, and can be understd by thers. It des nt try t paint all befre ne’s eyes, and it leaves a great deal t the nlker’s imaginatin. Smetimes nly the tip f a plum branch is given in the whle picture and left there as perfect.
This artistic traditin did nt cme by chance. Its characteristics may be mst cnveniently summed up, I think, in the wrld lyricism, and this lyricism came frm a certain type f human spirit and culture. Fr we must remember that Chinese painting is clsely related, in spirit and technique, t Chinese calligraphy and Chinese petry. Calligraphy gave it its technique, and Chinese petry lent it its spirit.
It was Wang Wei, brn in 699, a first-class landscape painter himself, wh first intrduced int painting the spirit and technique f Chinese petry, with its impressinism, its lyricism, and its emphasis n atmsphere. Thus the “father f the suthern schl,” which makes Chinese painting and deservedly famus, was a man nurtured in the Chinese petic spirit.
Later n, in the eleventh century, under the influence f Sng schlars like Su Dngp (1035--1101), Chinese painting reached still greater simplicity and subjectivity. Su Dngp even painted a bamb tree withut its jints, and when smene prtested, he replied by asking, “Did the bamb grw by adding ne jint t anther?” Su, wh was great writer and pet, specialized in painting bambs, and his bamb was like his “running script”, a splash f ink withut clurs.
The best way f understanding Chinese painting is t study these influences which went int the building f that peculiar traditin.
