UNIT 1 ART【導(dǎo)讀】　《一個(gè)干凈明亮的地方》是海明威的早期作品，是一部典型的虛無主義小說，具有典型的海明威風(fēng)格：文章以虛無思想為主題并大量使用簡潔句。A Clean，Well-lighted Place(excerpt)It was very late and everyone had left the cafe except an old man who sat in the shadow the leaves of the tree made against the electric light.In the day time the street was dusty，but at night the dew settled the dust and the old man liked to sit late because he was deaf and now at night it was quiet and he felt the difference.The two waiters inside the cafe knew that the old man was a little drunk，and while he was a good client they knew that if he became too drunk he would leave without paying，so they kept watch on him.“Last week he tried to commit suicide，” one waiter said.“Why？”“He was in despair.”“What about？”“Nothing.”“How do you know it was nothing？”“He has plenty of money.”They sat together at a table that was close against the wall near the door of the cafe and looked at the terrace where the tables were all empty except where the old man sat in the shadow of the leaves of the tree that moved slightly in the wind.A girl and a soldier went by in the street.The street light shone on the brass number on his collar.The girl wore no head covering and hurried beside him.“The guard will pick him up，”one waiter said.“What does it matter if he gets what he's after？” “He had better get off the street now.The guard will get him.They went by five minutes ago.” The old man sitting in the shadow rapped on his saucer with his glass.The younger waiter went over to him.“What do you want？”The old man looked at him.“Another  brandy，” he said.“You'll be drunk，” the waiter said.The old man looked at him.The waiter went away.“He'll stay all night，” he said to his colleague. “I'm sleepy now.I never get into bed before three o'clock.He should have killed himself last week.”The waiter took the brandy bottle and another saucer from the counter inside the cafe and marched out to the old man's table.He put down the saucer and poured the glass full of brandy.“You should have killed yourself last week，”he said to the deaf man.The old man motioned with his finger.“A little more，”he said.The waiter poured on into the glass so that the brandy slopped over and ran down the stem into the top saucer of the pile.“Thank you，” the old man said.The waiter took the bottle back inside the cafe.He sat down at the table with his colleague again.“He's drunk now，” he said.“He's drunk every night.”“What did he want to kill himself for？”“How should I know.”“How did he do it？”“He hung himself with a rope.”“Who cut him down？”“His niece.”“Why did they do it？”“Fear for his soul.”“How much money has he got？”“He's got plenty.”“He must be eighty years old.”“Anyway I should say he was eighty.”“I wish he would go home.I never get to bed before three o'clock.What kind of hour is that to go to bed？”“He stays up because he likes it.”“He's lonely.I'm not lonely.I have a wife waiting in bed for me.”“He had a wife once too.”“A wife would be no good to him now.”“You can't tell.He might be better with a wife.”“His niece looks after him.You said she cut him down.”“I know.”“I wouldn't want to be that old.An old man is a nasty thing.”一個(gè)干凈明亮的地方(節(jié)選)時(shí)間很晚了，大家都離開餐館，只有一個(gè)老人還坐在樹葉擋住燈光的陰影里。白天，街上盡是塵埃，到了晚上，露水壓住了塵埃。這個(gè)老人喜歡坐得很晚，因?yàn)樗莻€(gè)聾人，現(xiàn)在是夜里，十分寂靜，他感覺得到跟白天的不同。待在餐館里的兩個(gè)侍者知道這老人有點(diǎn)兒醉了，他雖然是個(gè)好主顧，可是，他們知道，如果他喝得太醉了，他會不付賬就走，所以他們一直在留神他。    “上個(gè)星期他想自殺。”一個(gè)侍者說。“為什么？”“他絕望啦?！?/span>“干嗎絕望？”“沒事兒?！?/span>“你怎么知道是沒事兒？”“他有很多錢?！?/span>他們一起坐在緊靠著餐館大門墻邊的桌旁，眼睛望著平臺，那兒的桌子全都空無一人，只有那個(gè)老人坐在隨風(fēng)輕輕飄拂的樹葉的陰影里。有個(gè)少女和一個(gè)大兵走過大街。街燈照在他那領(lǐng)章的銅號碼上。那個(gè)少女沒戴帽子，在他身旁匆匆走著。“警衛(wèi)隊(duì)會把他逮走。”一個(gè)侍者說。“如果他到手了他要找的東西，那又有什么關(guān)系呢？”“他這會兒還是從街上溜走為好。警衛(wèi)隊(duì)會找他麻煩，他們五分鐘前才經(jīng)過這里?！?/span>那老人坐在陰影里，用杯子敲敲茶托。那個(gè)年紀(jì)比較小的侍者走到他那兒。“你要什么？”老人朝他看了看。  “再來杯白蘭地。”他說。“你會喝醉的。”侍者說。老人朝他看了一看。侍者走開了。“他會通宵待在這里。”他對他的同事說。“我困了。我從來沒有在三點(diǎn)鐘以前睡覺過。他應(yīng)該在上星期就自殺了?！?/span>侍者從餐館里的柜臺上拿了一瓶白蘭地和另一個(gè)茶托，大步走了出來，送到老人桌上。他放下茶托，把杯子倒?jié)M了白蘭地。“你應(yīng)該在上星期就自殺了。”他對那個(gè)聾人說。老人把手指一晃。  “再加一點(diǎn)。”他說。侍者又往杯子里倒酒，酒溢了出來，順著高腳杯的腳流進(jìn)了一疊茶托的第一只茶托。“謝謝你。”老人說。侍者把酒瓶拿回到餐館去。他又同他的同事坐在桌旁。“他這會兒喝醉了。”他說。“他每天晚上都喝醉。”“他干嗎要自殺呀？”“我怎么知道。”“他上次是怎樣自殺的？”“他用繩子上吊。”“誰把他放下來的？”“他侄女?！?/span>“干嗎要把他放下來？”“為他的靈魂擔(dān)憂。”“他有多少錢？”“他有很多錢?！?/span>“他準(zhǔn)有八十歲嘍?！?/span>“不管怎樣，我算準(zhǔn)他有八十歲。”“我真希望他回家去。我從來沒有在三點(diǎn)鐘以前睡覺過。那是個(gè)什么樣的睡覺時(shí)間呀？”“他因?yàn)椴幌矚g睡覺所以才不睡覺?！?/span>“他孤孤單單。我可不孤單。我有個(gè)老婆在床上等著我呢?！?/span>“他從前也有過老婆。”“這會兒有老婆對他可沒好處。”“話可不能這么說。他有老婆也許會好些。”“他侄女會照料他。你剛才說是她把他放下來的?！?/span>“我知道?！?/span>“Not always.This old man is clean.He drinks without spilling.Even now，drunk.Look at him.”“I don't want to look at him.I wish he would go home.He has no regard for those who must work.” The old man looked from his glass across  the square，then over at the waiters.“Another brandy，” he said，pointing to his glass.The waiter who was in a hurry came over.“Finished，”he said，speaking with that  omission of syntax stupid people employ when  talking to drunken people or foreigners.“No more tonight.Close now.” “Another.”said the old man.“No.Finished.”The waiter wiped the edge of the table with a towel and shook his head.The old man stood up，slowly counted the saucers，took a leather coin purse from his pocket and paid for the drinks，leaving half a peseta tip.The waiter watched him go down the street，a very old man walking unsteadily but with dignity.“我才不要活得那么老。老人邋里邋遢。”“不一定都是這樣。這個(gè)老人干干凈凈。他喝啤酒并不滴滴答答往外漏。哪怕這會兒喝醉了。你瞧他。”“我才不想瞧他。我希望他回家去。他并不關(guān)心那些非干活不可的人?！?/span>那老人從酒杯上抬起頭來望望廣場，又望望那兩個(gè)侍者。“再來杯白蘭地。”他指著杯子說。那個(gè)著急的侍者跑了過去。“沒啦，”他不顧什么句法地說，蠢漢在對醉漢或外國人說話時(shí)就這么說法，  “今晚上沒啦。打烊啦。”“再來一杯。”那老人說。“不，沒啦。”侍者一邊拿塊毛巾揩揩桌沿，一邊搖搖頭。老人站了起來，慢慢地?cái)?shù)著茶托，從口袋里摸出一只裝硬幣的皮夾子來，付了酒賬，又放下半個(gè)比塞塔作小費(fèi)。那個(gè)侍者瞅著他順著大街走去，這個(gè)年紀(jì)很大的人走起路來，雖然腳步不挺穩(wěn)，卻很有神氣。[知識積累]1．keep watch  不尊重；不重視[文化鏈接]《一個(gè)干凈明亮的地方》內(nèi)容概要這篇小說所描述的是一位老人和兩位侍者的故事，其中老人這一人物形象看似微不足道，但從他自殺和飲酒的兩個(gè)選擇行為來分析，他是個(gè)展現(xiàn)了重壓之下的優(yōu)雅風(fēng)度和精神不敗的尊嚴(yán)感的海明威式主人公。兩位侍者之間的對話引出了“虛無”這一主題，表明“虛無是對存在的體驗(yàn)，人類只有在內(nèi)心保持一片干凈明亮的地方才能抵御虛無” 。
