Neil Armstrng (1930-2012) was brn in Ohi, the USA. He served briefly in cmbat as a recnnaissance (偵察機(jī)) pilt in the US Navy, befre finishing university. After graduating with a degree in aernautics, he became a civilian test pilt in the US gvernment’s military test pilt prgramme, and in 1962 he was selected as an astrnaut by NASA, becming the first American civilian t fly t space in 1966. He was chsen t be the missin cmmander fr Apll 11 and therefre the first persn t set ft n the mn, ver ther just-as-experienced astrnauts in large part because f his cmplete lack f eg.

First, I gt my cllege degree when I was 22, and then I wrked as a fighter pilt fr arund 10 years. Altgether, 14 f us were chsen frm amng 1,500 pilts t train fr space flights.Interviewer: That sunds really difficult. Did yu als have t be a certain size and weight?Mr Yang:Yes, at the time, yu had t be shrter than 172 centimetres in height and weigh less than 70 kilgrams. Yu als had t be in perfect health and perfect shape. Interviewer: S yu were the perfect chice! As we all knw, an astrnaut needs t be healthy and calm in rder t wrk in space. But yu als had t study a lt, t, right?Mr Yang:Yes, I had t learn English, science, and astrnmy. I als had t practise using space equipment, and d a lt f mental and physical training. It was very tiring, but I was s prud t have the pprtunity.
