NASA is making last attempts 1 (cmmunicate) with Opprtunity rver n Mars, said a NASA release n Tuesday. The agency will update Opprtunity's status at 11 a.m. PST (2 p.m. EST) n Wednesday at 2 press cnference in the agency's Jet Prpulsin Labratry (JPL) in Pasadena, Califrnia. The briefing 3 (attend) by NASA Administratr Jim Bridenstine, assciate 4 (administrate) f NASA's Science Missin Directrate, Thmas Zurbuchen, acting directr f NASA's Planetary Science Divisin Lri Glaze and JPL directr Michael Watkins.
If there is n respnse by Wednesday – 5 NASA suspects will be the case – Opprtunity might be declared 6 (die) , 15 years after arriving at the red planet, accrding t media reprts. The rver has nt been heard frm fr eight mnths since a planet-wide dust strm n Mars in June last year. 7 the strm eventually abated and the Martian skies cleared, the rver has nt cmmunicated with Earth since then. Missin team members have been trying t ruse the rver ever since, and they've been listening fr any pssible 8 (signal) frm Opprtunity as well.
In late January, NASA has develped a new, mre pwerful cllectin f cmmands t try t frce the rver t resume peratins. 9 , nthing was heard frm Opprtunity s far. Opprtunity landed n Mars n January 24, 2004. The glf-cart-sized rver was designed t travel 1,006 meters and perate n the Red Planet fr 90 Martian days. It had traveled ver 45 km and 10 (lg) its 5,000th Martian day back in February 2018.

Lin Xiqiang, als deputy directr f the agency, said at a press cnference 3 the Chinese Survey Space Telescpe, als knwn 4 the Chinese Space Statin Telescpe (CSST) and Xuntian Space Telescpe, 5 (expect) t make breakthrughs in csmlgy, dark matter and dark energy, galaxies and active galactic nuclei, Milky Way and neighbring galaxies, star frmatin and evlutin, and explanets. Lin said the high-reslutin telescpe will take deep-field survey 6 (bserve) with an area f 17,500 square degrees, as well as fine bservatins f different types f celestial bdies. He said that the telescpe, 7 imprtant part f the China Space Statin, can btain high-definitin panramic views f the universe. It has 8 (rugh) the same spatial reslutin as the Hubble Space Telescpe, 9 its field f view is mre than 300 times larger than the Hubble's. The telescpe will stay in the same rbit as the space statin fr lng-term independent flight and bservatins, and 10 (dck) with the space statin temprally fr supply, maintenance and upgrading, Lin added.

Half f the 11 farthest knwn stars in ur galaxy that are lcated abut 300,000 light-years frm Earth might 1 (rip) frm anther galaxy, US researchers said Wednesday. Researchers at the Harvard-Smithsnian Center fr Astrphysics used cmputer mdels 2 (simulate) hw the Sagittarius dwarf, ne f dzens f mini-galaxies that surrund ur galaxy, might mve ver the past eight billin years, by varying 3 (it) initial velcity and angle f apprach t the Milky Way. The study shwed the Sagittarius dwarf started with a 4 (weigh) f abut 10 billin times the mass f ur Sun, r abut ne percent f the Milky Way's mass.
Hwever, ver the age f the universe, it made several lps arund ur galaxy, and n each passage, the Milky Way's gravitatinal tides tugged n the smaller galaxy, 5 (pull) it apart like taffy. "Five f the 11 mst distant stars in ur galaxy have psitins and velcities that match 6 yu wuld expect f stars stripped frm the Sagittarius dwarf," they said in 7 statement. "The ther six d nt appear t be frm Sagittarius, but might have been remved frm a different dwarf galaxy." Overall, the hapless dwarf might have lst abut a third f its stars and a full nine-tenths f its dark matter.
This resulted 8 three distinct streams f stars that reach as far as ne millin light-years frm the Milky Way's center. Mapping prjects like the Slan Digital Sky Survey have charted ne f the three streams 9 (predict) by these simulatins, but nt t the full extent that the mdels suggest, the researchers said. Future instruments like the Large Synptic Survey Telescpe, which will detect much fainter stars acrss the sky, shuld be able t identify the ther streams, they added. "The star streams 10 have been mapped s far are like creeks cmpared t the giant river f stars we predict will be bserved eventually," said lead authr Marin Dierickx f the Harvard-Smithsnian Center fr Astrphysics. "Mre interlpers frm Sagittarius are ut there just waiting t be fund."
