軍事意義　　長城是世界古代史上最偉大的軍事防御工程，它并非簡單孤立的一線城墻，而是由點到線、由線到面，把長城沿線的隘口、軍堡、關(guān)城和軍事重鎮(zhèn)連接成一張嚴密的網(wǎng)，形成一個完整的防御體系defensive system。軍堡、關(guān)城和軍事重鎮(zhèn)這個體系具有戰(zhàn)斗、指揮、觀察、通訊、隱蔽等多種功能，并配置有長駐軍隊的點線結(jié)合防御工程整體。
文化意義　　在長城出現(xiàn)的2000多年來，以長城為中心，南北文化的交流始終沒有停止過。戰(zhàn)國時期，趙武靈王修建趙長城，號召國人學習“胡服騎射”，進行南北文化交流。秦漢時期，長城南北文化進行了空前的對話與交流，在長城沿線發(fā)現(xiàn)的秦權(quán)、詔版，內(nèi)蒙和林格爾漢墓壁畫、單于和親瓦當，還有聞名遐爾的昭君墓等，均是南北文化交流融合的見證。在長城地區(qū)的文化帶里，遺留下來眾多的名勝古跡，諸如敦煌、云岡石窟、麥積山、萬佛堂石窟壁畫、雕塑;元代居庸關(guān)云臺、金代的盧溝橋以及金中都、元大都遺址與出土的文物等，都體現(xiàn)了文化交流的特點，同時也記載著中華民族歷史上文化的輝煌。
