象征意義 萬里長城自構(gòu)筑的那天起,就成為中華民族大一統(tǒng)的象征,2000多年來,任何人都沒有能從認識上割裂萬里長城,因而也就無法割裂中華民族。長城對中國人來說,是意志、勇氣和力量的標志,象征著中華民族偉大意志和力量。 1933年的長城抗戰(zhàn)震驚中外,揭開了抗日戰(zhàn)爭史上最初的壯烈一頁,“誓與長城共存亡”成為抗日將士們的共同誓言?!捌饋恚辉缸雠`的人們,把我們的血肉筑成我們新的長城!”《義勇軍進行曲》唱出了全體中國人民共同的心聲?!读x勇軍進行曲》的長期傳唱,使長城在人們心目中已升華為勤勞、智慧、百折不撓、眾志成城、堅不可摧的民族精神和意志,增強了中華民族的自豪感、自信心和愛國熱情。
軍事意義  長城是世界古代史上最偉大的軍事防御工程,它并非簡單孤立的一線城墻,而是由點到線、由線到面,把長城沿線的隘口、軍堡、關(guān)城和軍事重鎮(zhèn)連接成一張嚴密的網(wǎng),形成一個完整的防御體系defensive system。軍堡、關(guān)城和軍事重鎮(zhèn)這個體系具有戰(zhàn)斗、指揮、觀察、通訊、隱蔽等多種功能,并配置有長駐軍隊的點線結(jié)合防御工程整體。
文化意義  在長城出現(xiàn)的2000多年來,以長城為中心,南北文化的交流始終沒有停止過。戰(zhàn)國時期,趙武靈王修建趙長城,號召國人學習“胡服騎射”,進行南北文化交流。秦漢時期,長城南北文化進行了空前的對話與交流,在長城沿線發(fā)現(xiàn)的秦權(quán)、詔版,內(nèi)蒙和林格爾漢墓壁畫、單于和親瓦當,還有聞名遐爾的昭君墓等,均是南北文化交流融合的見證。在長城地區(qū)的文化帶里,遺留下來眾多的名勝古跡,諸如敦煌、云岡石窟、麥積山、萬佛堂石窟壁畫、雕塑;元代居庸關(guān)云臺、金代的盧溝橋以及金中都、元大都遺址與出土的文物等,都體現(xiàn)了文化交流的特點,同時也記載著中華民族歷史上文化的輝煌。
