An old man went to live with his son, his daughter-in-law, and a four-year-old grandson. The old man’s hands trembled, his eyesight was very poor, and he couldn’t walk steadily (平穩(wěn)地). The family ate together nightly at the dinner table. But the elderly grandfather’s shaky hands and failing sight made eating rather difficult. Rice often dropped on the floor.
The son and the daughter-in-law became angry with the old man, so they put a small table in the corner. There, the grandfather ate alone, while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner at the table. Since the grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl.
The four-year-old son watched it all in silence. One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with a piece of wood on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, “What are you making?" The boy answered, “Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and mama to eat your food from when I grow up." The four-year-old son smiled and went back to work. The words struck the parents so hard that they were in silence. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks (臉頰). Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. The way to lift up your mood
Everyone has periods in their lives when everything seems very hard, when there’s nobody to talk to and the mood(情緒)is just getting worse and worse. 31
The first thing you should try is socializing and thinking positively. It’s very hard, because usually when we feel sad we lock ourselves at home and try to think about all the bad things we have. But if you try to force yourself and call a friend for a cup of coffee, the chances are that you may change your mood into better. Just try to avoid bad thoughts. 32
33 It could be something you wanted for a long time—a short trip, a coat, a ring or anything that could lift up your mood. It doesn’t have to be costly, but it has to be good to yourself.
Not only giving gifts to yourself can lift up your mood. 34 Think of your friends, family, relatives or even local charities (慈善機構(gòu))and choose one person and give him a gift. It doesn’t have to be something expensive or big. It may be just a little toy for your poor neighbour’s child. Making another person feel happy will make you feel good in your heart and mind.
Take control of your feelings. Don’t let them control you. 35 Just follow the advice above, and start doing something.
A. Cry aloud if you feel it is necessary.
B. Here are some things that may help you lift up your mood.
C. Making yourself feel better isn’t that hard.
D. Buying things for others may be a perfect way to feel happy.
E. Do your best to find someone to talk to.
F. Instead, try to think about the bright side of your life.
G. You should also try doing something only for yourself, something totally selfish.

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks(盯著他們).
One day, Ali took Zahra’s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he leaned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞)with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.

(Text 2)
W: Have you seen that huge new building going up near the market?
M: Yes. I can't see what it's going to be. Not an apartment building… not a hotel… probably a department store.
(Text 3)
W: OK, class. Me' re about to start our tests. Please clear your desks except for your pencils. Any questions?
M: Can we use our calculators?
W: No, you may not use a calculator on this exam. Let's begin!
(Text4)
M: Excuse me, ma' am? Do you know when the No l5 bus comes? I need to be at the theater by 7:00.
M: On, the next bus won't come until 6:45, so you won't make it on time. You should call a taxi.
(Text 5)
W: How may I help you, sir?
M: I'm wondering if anyone has turned in a train ticket. I just lost my ticket to London leaving this afternoon at 5:00, and I've only got half an hour before boarding.
(Text 6)
M: Is it really 11:00? Where did the time go? Mary and I had such a wonderful dinner in your new home, but I'm afraid we've missed the last bus.
W: Do you want me to drive you home, Bill? It's no trouble.
M: No, thanks. I know you have to work tomorrow. Me don't want you to be tired on your first day at work, Sue. We'll call a taxi.
(Text 7)
W: Excuse me. Do you sell office equipment here?
M: Yes. We have all kinds of office desks, chairs, computers and other equipment.
W: Mell, I'd like to buy some computers for my company.
M: Certainly. We have a variety of computers on sale here.
W: Wel1, if we place an order now, how soon could you deliver them?
M: Mell, I cannot give you an exact date, but we promise to deliver them as soon as possible.
W: Good. I'll buy ten computers then.
M: Ten? That's good.
W: So, I was wondering if we could get 15% off.
M: Well, we usually only offer 12%.

M: Well. OK, we'd be happy to do business with you.
(Text 8)
M: Hello. Are you the person who has a house for sale?
W: Yes, I am.
M: Mell, the ad in the newspaper says that it has four bedrooms and three bathrooms… just what I need for my family of five. May I ask how much you want for it?
W: I prefer not to mention a price over the phone, but let's say it's in the neighborhood of $500,000. I would also require
$100,000 in the beginning. Why don't you come by and take a look?
M: Wel1, I'm not sure I'd be able to pay so much at once, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to see the house. If you can tell me how to get to Churchill Avenue from South Florida Street, my wife and I will be there right away.
(Text 9)
M: How do you usually get to work?
W: I drive.
M: I wish people would ride bikes more. Can you imagine how good that would be for the environment?
W: I know what you mean. But it's just so convenient to drive. Every day, I think I should take the subway, but I always end up driving.
M: Yes, but when everyone does that, it causes pollution.
W: Well, maybe if I sold my car, I would be able to change my habits. And think of all the money I could save on gas, insurance, and repairs.
M: Yeah, and you could get some exercise. I always ride my bike to work. I feel so healthy now that I needn’t go to the gym.
w: It would be good to get back in shape. I'm so lazy now; I never walk anywhere.
M: Let's go to the used car market. I'll bet we could get a good price for your car.
W: Sounds good. But I have to drive to the supermarket for my week l y grocery shopping. Let's go after that.
(Text10)
Jim was surprised when his high school class traveled to England to learn about the life of William Shakespeare, one of England’s most famous writers. He knew Shakespeare was born in a small town, but until he visited Stratford-upon-Avon, Jim couldn't really imagine the place where Shakespeare spent his childhood.
During his visit, Jim learned that Shakespeare's father was a glove maker. He also helped the city government in his spare time so his son could go to school for free. Sadly, when Shakespeare was only 15, his father died while traveling back from Cambridge. He had to leave school and could not go to university. But the tour guide told Jim's class that it was good that Shakespeare did not go to college. Nobody taught him how to write his plays, so he was free to write in a new way. His plays were different and interesting, and he became famous in London. Now, his name is known all over the world.
