Although protecting wildlife may seem too hard at times, even small actions in your own neighborhood can help protect many different animals. Here are some tips on how to protect wildlife through small actions. ☆Create wildlife friendly areas in your backyard. When trying to make your garden more beautiful, you can choose plants that can provide food and shelter to native wildlife. This will also help cut down on pollution. ☆A(yù)void harming the natural ecosystem (生態(tài)系統(tǒng)) in your area. Some plants from other places can kill or harm native plants that provide food and shelter for wildlife. ☆Have a greener lifestyle. By using less water and fewer fuels, you will be helping to protect the wildlife around you. Take buses or the subway when you can, turn off electric devices when you're not using them, take shorter showers, and keep your room temperature at or below 68 Fahrenheit degrees during the winter. ☆Buy products that are wildlife friendly. Don't buy products that are made from endangered animals. Keep in mind that some endangered animals are killed by traps or hunters who are after other wildlife within the same habitat. ☆Donate money or time to organizations that protect wildlife and their habitats. You can give money to organizations or groups that protect wildlife species in your neighborhood. 21.We infer that the purpose of this passage is to ________. A.tell us why protecting wildlife is extremely important now B.suggest that we protect wildlife through actions C.explain why protecting wildlife is not as hard as people think D.give us some tips on how to protect wildlife through small actions 22.Which of the following threats to wildlife is NOT mentioned in the passage? A.Animal diseases. B.Loss of habitat. C.Pollution. D.Hunters. 23.What behaviour do you think the author can disagree with? A.Planting right trees in gardens. B.Buying an ivory vase for a gift. C.Donating some money to WWF. D.Reading books about wildlife. B One night, Pilar was in a deep sleep when she was woken by her cat Inti. Inti was meowing wildly outside Pilar's bedroom and throwing himself against the closed bedroom door. When Pilar opened her eyes, she saw that her bedroom was filled with smoke. As she escaped her house with Inti in her arms, she saw that a fire was burning in her kitchen. Pilar could easily have lost her life, but Inti would not let that happen. Even though Inti could have escaped the house through a cat door, he wouldn't leave Pilar. As amazing as this story is, it is not as uncommon as you may think. Take the example of Charlotte Lee and her horse, Thunder. One summer night, the whole family was asleep with the windows open. It was normally very quiet where they lived. Suddenly, there was a loud noise. Charlotte woke up from her sweet dream, and the noise continued. Then she heard a horse running fast towards the house. The next thing she saw was Thunder standing outside her window, neighing and shaking his head. She knew something was wrong. Charlotte quickly got everyone out of the house before the earthquake hit. Thunder has saved her life. There are also stories of wild animals coming to the rescue of humans. One animal known to be a friend of humans is the dolphin. Once, Todd Endris was surfing with his friends when he was attacked by a 13-foot (4-meter) shark. In the middle of the attack, a group of dolphins came to his rescue by forming a protective ring around Endris until he could get safely to shore. Without the help of the dolphins, there is little chance that Todd could have escaped. No one is sure why animals have so often come to our rescue. However, it is clear that humans and animals enjoy a close relationship. It is important that we care for them as much as we can. 24.Why did Inti throw himself against the door? A.He was trying to wake up his owner. B.He wanted to get out of the room. C.He felt bored and was playing by himself. D.He couldn't find the way out because of smoke. 25.What did Charlotte do before the earthquake? A.She closed the windows. B.She was sleeping deeply. C.She ran to warn her neighbors. D.She got her horse out of the stable. 26.What do we know about Inti and Thunder? A.They were shy and quiet. B.They used to make noise at night. C.They were brave and smart. D.They saved their owners several times. 27.Which of the following is probably Todd's feeling towards the dolphins? A.Doubtful. B.Grateful. C.Frightened. D.Bored. C People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions—and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why. Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly (均勻的) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes. “We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽略) the mouth. ” According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations. The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies. It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than Westerners did. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.” In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation. 28.The discovery shows that Westerners ________. A.pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth B.consider facial expressions universally reliable C.observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways D.have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions 29.What were the people asked to do in the study? A.To make a face at each other. B.To get their faces impressive. C.To classify some face pictures. D.To observe the researchers' faces. 30.What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 6 refer to? A.The participants in the study. B.The researchers of the study. C.The errors made during the study. D.The data collected from the study. 31.What can be the best title for the passage? A.The Eye is the Window to the Soul B.Cultural Differences in Reading Emotions C.Effective Methods to Develop Social Skills D.How to Increase Cross-cultural Understanding D Are you preparing for a big test? If so, you may want to go playing some basketball in between hitting the books. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels (血管), including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr Cameron is sure that this allows people who exercise to think better. As she says, “while we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can actually cause physical changes in the brain.” The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. Even a little movement can show big results. Margaret Barnes, a scientist, also believes in the importance of exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in primary school or high school can result from a lack of movement as babies. “Babies need movement that encourages and excites their five senses. They need to set up a connection between motion and memory. In this way, as they get older, children will begin to connect physical activity with higher learning,” says Margaret. Older people can develop their brains as well. Cornell University studied a group of seniors who have a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for babies, exercise for older people should not be too simple. Learning some new skills or actions, such as with yoga or tai-chi helps to open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long time. For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main aim is to increase the brain's flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as two to three hours of exercise a week. 32.What is the connection between exercise and brain development ? A.Exercise helps make our blood vessels. B.Physical exercise helps us think better. C.Exercise prevents us having brain diseases. D.More physical exercises enlarge our brains. 33.How can exercise affect babies? A.Whether they are excited or not depends on movements. B.A lack of movement results from their learning disabilities. C.The more frequently they move, the cleverer they become. D.The more activities they do, the greater their brains develop. 34.Why is yoga suggested for seniors? A.It helps them memorise quicker. B.It decreases the heart rate. C.It includes learning new actions. D.It can be done in groups. 35.What is the smallest amount of exercise required to gain any benefit? A.3 hours per week. B.4.2 hours per week. C.1 hour per day. D.40 hours per month. 第二節(jié)(共5小題;每小題2.5分,滿分12.5分) 閱讀下面短文,從短文后的選項中選出可以填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。 Are you a happy person or an unhappy person? We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn't see some rain soon we would lose everything. It was on this day that I learned the true lesson of sharing and witnessed the best miracle I have ever seen in my life. I was in the kitchen making lunch for the family when I saw my six-year-old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. I could only see his back.He wasn't walking with his usual steps. He was obviously walking with great effort...trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house. I went back to make sandwiches, thinking that whatever he had been doing was completed. Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow purposeful long step toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey. He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked; being very careful not to spill (濺出 ) the water he held in them. I stepped close as he went into the woods. Branches and thorns slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He might have a much greater purpose, I thought. As I came closer, I saw the most amazing sight. Several large deer stood in front of him. Billy walked right up to them, at the sight of which I almost screamed for him to get away. A huge buck (雄鹿 ) was dangerously close. But the buck neither threatened him nor even moved as Billy knelt down. And I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water and heat exhaustion, lifting its head with great effort to lap (舔) up the water cupped in my boy's hands. 注意:1.續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150左右; 2.請按如下格式作答。 When the water was gone, Billy jumped up to run back to the house. M:Surprisingly, I didn't forget my words, but Harry did. W:So, what happened? M:Well, luckily I knew his lines too, so I told him very quietly. But that wasn't the only thing. Mark fell over a chair. It was supposed to be a sad bit! Oh, and you won't believe this — the lights all went off at the end of the play. It was so funny — we had to act in darkness.
