Many peple are familiar with LEGOs. Develped in Denmark, the plastic building tys have been arund since the 1950s. The tys click tgether firmly, allwing users t build things that dn’t fall apart easily. The cmpany calls this ability t hld tightly “clutch pwer”.
Since rughly 1960, LEGO bricks have been made frm a kind f plastic called ABS. ABS plastic makes LEGO bricks very tugh, and gives them great clutch pwer, ver and ver again.
Sadly, ABS plastic can’t really be recycled, and it takes a very lng time t break dwn. That’s a big prblem. The wrld is struggling with a huge plastic waste prblem. And LEGO makes abut 110 billin bricks every year.
But since 2015, LEGO has been making an effrt t make their prducts mre earth-friendly. Three years ag, the cmpany began making sme LEGO parts, like trees, ut f a plastic made frm sugar cane. Recently, LEGO started using paper bags instead f plastic t reduce packaging.
But making bricks ut f recycled plastic is a big challenge. The gal is t make bricks ut f PET plastic, which is sfter than ABS plastic and can be fund in things like bttles and clthing. A recycled ne-liter plastic bttle culd make abut 102×4 LEGO bricks.
Over the past three years, the cmpany has tested ver 250 different ways f creating LEGO bricks frm recycled plastic. A team f mre than 150 peple are wrking n the prblem. Tim Brks, wh fcuses n envirnmental respnsibility at LEGO, says that experimenting and failing is “an imprtant part f learning”.
Nw, the cmpany says they’ve fund a way t make a gd 2×4 brick frm PET. One imprtant step was finding a way f adding things t PET plastic t make it tugher and give it better clutch pwer like ABS.
“We knw kids care abut the envirnment,” said Mr. Brks. “Even thugh it will be a while befre they will be able t play with bricks made frm recycled plastic, we want t let kids knw we’re wrking n it.”

It’s imprtant t clarify that having smart friends isn’t as imprtant as having studius friends in this study. The researchers didn’t find that friends’ grades mattered. What influenced a student’s cllege grades were his r her friends’ high schl study habits. T be sure, students with higher grades tend t have better study habits.
They als fund that, fr every additinal 10 hurs a week that a student’s friends had spent studying in high schl, n average, the student’s wn study time in cllege wuld likely increase by almst 25 minutes a day, and the student’s wn GPA (Grade Pint Average) wuld likely rise by almst a tenth f a pint during freshman year. Almst identical results are amng freshman rmmates randmly assigned by the cllege, which cnfirms that peers are actually influencing study habits and eching the friendship analysis. The researchers cntrlled fr gender, race and prir academic achievement and fund that the psitive influence f studius peers was similar fr bth high achieving and lw achieving students.
The difference between a B and B+ average is 0.3 pints, s studius friends are nly nudging grades up a bit. That means peers are just ne f many factrs influencing hw well students d in cllege. Every year mre f us try and reduce ur impact n the planet. A refill shp, r zer waste shp, gives yu a chice t g green.

In life, nce n a path, we tend t fllw it, fr better r wrse. What’s sad is that even if it’s the latter, we ften fllw a certain path anyway because we are used t the way things are that we dn’t even recgnize that they culd be different. Psychlgists call this phenmenn functinal fixedness.
This classic experiment will give yu an idea f hw it wrks—and a sense f whether yu may have fallen int the same trap:
Peple are given a bx f tacks (大頭釘)and sme matches and asked t find a way t attach a candle t a wall s that it burns prperly. Typically, the subjects try tacking the candle t the wall r lighting it t fix it with melted wax (石蠟). The tacks are t shrt, and the candle desn’t fasten t the wall. S hw can yu accmplish the task? The successful technique is t use the tack bx as a candle hlder. Yu empty it, tack it t the wall, and stand the candle inside it.
T think f that, yu have t lk beynd the bx's usual rle as a cntainer just fr tacks and reimagine it serving an entirely new purpse. That is difficult because we all suffer—t ne degree r anther—frm functinal fixedness. The inability t think in new ways affects peple in every crner f sciety. The plitical therist Hannah Arend cined the phrase frzen thughts t describe deeply held ideas that we n lnger questin but shuld. In Arendt’s eyes, the cmplacent reliance n such accepted “truths” als made peple blind t ideas that didn’t fit their wrldview, even when there was ample evidence fr them. Frzen thinking has nthing t d with intelligence, she said, “It can be fund in highly intelligent peple.”
Anther cntext in which frzen thinking can turn truly dangerus is medicine. If yu land in the hspital, it’s natural t want t be treated by the mst experienced physicians n staff. But accrding t a 2014 study in the Jurnal f the American Medical Assciatin(JAMA), yu’d be better ff being treated by the relative nvices.

It’s after midnight and yu’ve been studying all day. Empty energy drinks line the table and yu sigh, “Tmrrw, I’ m getting ice cream. I deserve t treat myself.”
This year, the s-called “treat yurself culture” has expanded far beynd what was nce a reward-based mindset. Nw, “treating yurself” has becme mre abut stress-caused indulgence (放縱). It represents the mre deep-seated issues with the stress we regularly put urselves under.
The rt f the prblem lies in ur belief that we shuld be ding mre wrk if it isn’t hard enugh. Especially at a tp university, I cnstantly find myself wanting t d mre. I want mre credits, a higher-grade pint average, and mre respnsibilities I’ll later use as cnversatin tpics in interviews. This drive is by n means a bad thing. We all are trying t eventually land in a place where we can relax and live a mre enjyable life. Hwever, there are a lt f prblems with this lgic. Withut sunding cmpletely hpeless and pessimistic, it is pssible that the future we imagine in ur twenties will nt becme reality. Therefre, it is imprtant t integrate things that make us happy with wrk, schl r life induced stress.
Psychlgy certainly supprts this belief. While having gd self-cntrl was psitively assciated with happiness, being able t enjy life’s little pleasures withut feeling ashamed f ding s is just as imprtant. Fr example, even if yu have a busy schedule f wrk, make time t stp by yur favrite cffee shp r spend ten minutes t g n a walk utdrs.
I cannt urge yu t give up yur late nights f studying, energy drinks and all. I cannt tell yu t always chse t d smething that makes yu happy ver smething yu have r shuld d. What makes sme peple incapable f aplgizing even when they’re clearly in the wrng?
Peple wh cannt aplgize ften have deep feelings f lw self-wrth. When their delicate eg(自我) cannt absrb the blw f admitting they were wrng, their defense mechanisms kick in—they may place blame and even argue abut basic facts t prevent the threat f having t lwer themselves by ffering an aplgy.
Unfrtunately, many f us mistakenly interpret these peple’s defensiveness as a sign f psychlgical strength. That’s because utwardly they appear t be tugh individuals wh refuse t back dwn. But this desn’t shw that they’re strng—it shws that they’re weak.
Admitting that we’re wrng is emtinally uncmfrtable and painful t ur sense f self. In rder t take respnsibility and aplgize, ur self-wrth needs t be strng enugh t absrb that discmfrt. Indeed, if ur self-wrth is higher and mre stable, we can tlerate the temprary discmfrt that such an admissin invlves—withut the walls arund ur eg falling dwn.
But if ur self-wrth is seemingly high but actually breakable, that discmfrt can g thrugh ur defensive walls and scre a direct hit t ur eg. Indeed, the mre fixed ne’s defense mechanisms are, the mre delicate the eg they’re prtecting.
The mistake we ften make when faced with smene wh’s habitually incapable f aplgizing is t becme angry and try t win ur argument with them. But the sad reality is that we can never win. In these situatins, the best we can d is make ur pints as calmly and as cnvincingly as we can and then disengage frm the argument when it becmes unprductive—like when they disagree with the facts, cme up with silly excuses r turn t mean remarks.

The researchers surveyed 2,012 adults and fund that ver three quarters admit ding a frm f revenge sleep prcrastinatin, using their phnes right up until falling asleep. Then the researchers selected sme scial media apps t test hw seriusly they affect sleep quality. Each participant was asked t wear a smartwatch t recrd hw lng it tk t fall asleep, and prvide feedback n hw tired they felt the next mrning. The result revealed that the average time taken t fall asleep was ver 45 minutes and an increasing tiredness was reprted by ver half f the participants. It shwed that revenge sleep prcrastinatin impacted sleep quality a lt, which can lead t adverse implicatins n physical and mental health.
S why des it happen? Accrding t the researchers, it’s largely dwn t the blue light emitted frm phne screens. It stimulates the brain and reduces natural melatnin(褪黑素) prductin, increasing tiredness, and in turn increasing the amunt f time spent falling asleep.
