[2020·海南五校一模] A newly married woman called Gilleece, saying she lost her wallet at his bar with her wedding ring inside. Gilleece looked through camera videos, watching the woman's every step in the bar until she went to sit on a bench outside and left when her ride arrived. Then a young man approached the bench and put something in his pocket. Gilleece posted several pictures on the bar's Facebook page, asking if anybody knew the guy.
Within hours, Gilleece got a text from 17-year-old Prather. Prather admitted having taken the wallet because he hadn't eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but just took the money and threw the wallet off the public docks(碼頭) into the ocean.
Gilleece, unsure whether he believed Prather, told the teen to meet him at the bar. There, Prather said that, not getting along with his family, he had been living in the woods for a week. Gilleece saw him as a kid rather than a criminal. But the police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Prather could face prison. Gilleece planned to employ two divers to search for it. Meanwhile, the police wanted Gilleece to bring the teen to the station. He called them and said,“He's going to be at the docks with me tomorrow.”
The next day a crowd gathered to watch the two divers search in the waters Prather mentioned. Finally a diver appeared with the wallet, and inside was the ring. Cheers burst from the crowd. The wallet's owner immediately dropped the charges against Prather. But troubled by Prather sleeping in the cold woods, Gilleece told the teen he could stay with him and his family until he stood on his own feet. He also gave the kid a job at his bar.
“Most people would have given the videos to the police, but he chose to help me,”Prather told CBS News.

[2020·大連高三一模] Emilia Dobek traces her interest in space and the universe back to third grade when she and her father watched a blood moon-a total lunar eclipse(月食) -on the roof of their house.
Now a seventh grader at East Prairie Elementary School, Dobek recently won the national Discovery Education Lockheed Martin Beyond Challenge by designing a space station for travelling to Mars.
She says that night watching the lunar eclipse started a strong desire in her that has yet to run out of fuel. So when her teacher Andrea Smeeton received information about the national challenge, Smeeton said she immediately had one student in mind.
“I knew she would love the challenge and that she would go way beyond in her search,” Smeeton said. “She immediately started researching bone density(密度) of astronauts and how to have food on Mars.”
“My design will ensure the safety of the astronauts but also make sure their comfort is out of this world,”Dobek says.
Dobek's design calls for building the MSS or Mars Storage Station to put the supplies in. It also includes the SGF or Self-Growing Farm, and she details how it would work with the elements on Mars.
Then there is physical and leisure activity for the astronauts under Dobek's design. A simulator(模擬裝置) allows astronauts to choose their exercise machine and virtual reality environment. Rooms have circular ceilings so astronauts will be able to watch downloaded shows and even see places on Earth, such as their homes.
“I want to tell other kids to follow their passions,” Dobek said. “Whatever they want to do, they should push for it and always try their best.”

[2020·成都第三次診斷] Climate change is perhaps the key issue of our time. Often, however, it is presented to us as being so abstract that it seems impossibly distant. For those of you looking for something a little more concrete, a new report suggests that the effects of climate change may significantly affect coffee.
The report, put out by The Climate Institute, describes the effects of climate change on various coffee-growing nations and the resultant effects on the plants and those who grow them.
Coffea arabica plants, which produce 70% of all commercial coffee, can be adversely affected by even a half-degree change in typical weather conditions. This sensitivity to temperature puts the plant at increased risk of the effects of climate change.
In Central America the average temperature has risen by a full degree Celsius since 1960. In Ethiopia the average temperature has increased by 1.3 degrees. This increase is enough to have notable effects on the plants. In Tanzania the productivity per hectare of coffee has fallen by half since the 1960s due to changes in temperature.
Indeed, studies claim that by 2050 the area of the world suitable for growing coffee will be cut by half. Coffee production is likely to then be pushed to higher elevations(海拔) to take advantage of lower temperatures, but this will not be enough to make up for lost lowland areas.
Coffee is the second most traded goods by developing nations, and the inability of producer nations to export it could cause dramatic chain reactions in their economies. Millions of people make a living in the production, processing, transport, and sale of coffee; their livelihoods would stand to take a blow as growing areas decrease and prices rise.
As the temperature keeps rising, your cup of coffee will become much more expensive, and it may also carry an aftertaste more bitter than usual, for all those workers in the coffee belt left without the means to make a living as conditions worsen. Not only that, but the economic effects will cost the West millions in increased foreign aid.
12.What does the underlined word “adversely” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A.Slightly. B.Temporarily. C.Harmfully. D.Gradually.
13.Why will people have to grow coffee in highland areas?
A.To adapt to the change of temperature.
B.To increase the quality of the products.
C.To reduce the cost of coffee production.
D.To get access to water supply more easily.
14.What conclusion can we draw from the last two paragraphs?
A.The rich will get richer and the poor poorer.
B.Small changes may have large effects in general.
C.Developed countries ought to aid poor countries.
D.Coffee trade will eventually disappear in the world.
15.How does the author feel about the future of coffee production?
A.Cautious. B.Worried. C.Unconcerned. D.Hopeful.

A young man had bought an old house that was in bad shape, but he and his wife believed they could restore it. They immediately went to work. Their goal was to have the old building look best for New Year's Eve get-together.
Just two days before New Year, however, a storm swept through the area, leaving a hole in the wall of the house. There was obviously no time to repair the damage before New Year. The sad couple attended a local auction (拍賣) that afternoon. One of the items put up for bids was an old gold-and-ivory-colored tablecloth. Seized by an inspiration, the young man was the highest bidder at $ 6.50. His idea was to hang the cloth to cover the ragged hole.
On the day before New Year, it was snowy. As the young man unlocked the house door, he noticed an old woman standing at the bus stop. He knew the bus wouldn't be there within at least half an hour, so he invited her inside to keep warm.
When the woman walked in and saw the tablecloth, she rushed at it and said excitedly, “It's mine. It is my tablecloth.” She told the surprised man its history and even showed him her name in one corner of the tablecloth. She and her husband had once lived in Vienna, Austria, and their village was hit by a deadly disease. So they decided to flee to Switzerland, but her husband told her to leave first, saying he had something urgent to deal with. A few days later, it was reported that the bus her husband took fell off the cliff (懸崖) and he was never to be found. Her husband was believed to have died. Touched by her story, the young man asked about her address, planning to send the tablecloth to her after New Year. As the bus came, she left.
In the candlelight of New Year's Eve, the tablecloth looked even more beautiful. As the man's friends left the house, they thanked the man for his arrangement and mentioned how beautiful the house looked.
Paragraph 1:
One old gentleman stayed, admiring the tablecloth.

A
【難句分析】 Hiking(遠足) is a great way to get active and reduce stress while you are exploring the city.
從句while you are exploring the city是一個時間狀語從句。
依據Greenbelt on the Go部分的“Registration is required.To register,please email naturecenter@ sigreenbelt. org before August 14”可知,參加該活動需要提前登記,因此選D。
【干擾項分析】 依據該部分的“The length of each hike will be determined by the pace of the group”可知,徒步旅行的長度取決于隊伍的速度,故A項錯誤;該部分只提及“we point out a few of the distinct features that make each park special”,并未指出會參觀三個不同種類的公園,故B項錯誤,此處易與第一項活動的三個公園混淆,考生需理清信息;該活動地址為“Greenbelt Nature Center in...Staten Island”,故C項錯誤。
依據第四項活動的“The three miles of nearby natural shoreline are a sandy beach...found here”可知,這里適合喜歡沙灘、海岸、大海的人,所以喜歡大海的人應該給The South Pole at Wards Point活動的聯(lián)系郵箱發(fā)郵件咨詢信息,因此選D。
依據第一段的“Visit our page to find some of the best free walking tours across New York City”可知,這四項遠足活動都是免費的,因此選B。
B
But troubled by Prather sleeping in the cold woods,Gilleece told the teen he could stay with him and his family until he stood on his own feet.
troubled by...woods在句中作原因狀語,he could stay with...own feet為省略了that的賓語從句。
【習語積累】 1.be on the case處理事件(尤指刑事偵查)
We have two agents on the case.
2.stand on one's own(two) feet
When his parents died he had to learn to stand on his own two feet.
第一段說“she went to sit on a bench outside...and put something in his pocket”,由此可知Gilleece查看視頻發(fā)現有個少年在這位女士坐過的長凳上撿到這個錢包,所以這位女士是在等車的時候把錢包落在了長凳上,因此選C。
第四段談到“Gilleece told the teen he could stay with him and his family until he stood on his own feet. He also gave the kid a job at his bar”,即Gilleece告訴Prather可以到自己家里住宿,直到他能夠自立,并讓他在自己的酒吧里工作,由此可知選D。
Whatever they want to do, they should push for it and always try their best.
根據第一段“Emilia Dobek traces her interest in space and the universe back to third grade when she and her father watched a blood moon—a total lunar eclipse(月食)-on the roof of their house”可知,Dobek對太空感興趣是從她在三年級時的一個晚上觀看一次月食開始的。
For those of you looking for something a little more concrete, a new report suggests that the effects of climate change may significantly affect coffee.
分析:句中that the effects of climate change may significantly affect coffee為that引導的賓語從句,作及物動詞suggests的賓語;looking for something a little more concrete為現在分詞短語作后置定語。
根據第三段第一句“Coffea arabica plants, which produce 70% of all commercial coffee, can be adversely affected by even a half-degree change in typical weather conditions”可知,只有半度的氣候變化就能給咖啡種植帶來不良影響;結合該段第二句可推知,畫線詞意為“有害地,不利地”,故C項正確。
根據第五段尾句“Coffee production is likely to then be pushed to higher elevations(海拔) to take advantage of lower temperatures, but this will not be enough to make up for lost lowland areas”可知,為了適應溫度的變化,人們將不得不把咖啡種植移到高處,故A項正確。
根據第五段最后一句中的“but this will not be enough to make up for lost lowland areas”并結合文章其他內容可知,隨著溫度的不斷升高,咖啡產量將會受到嚴重影響,且把咖啡種植移到高處也不能彌補喪失的低地區(qū)域。
17.答案與解析:G 承接上文“Why is this?”,并結合本段中的“One of them is”和“Another important reason is”可推知,此空表述英語流行有諸多原因,故選G項。
19.答案與解析:D 承接上文的疑問句,并結合下文的肯定陳述“It's important to have a language that the people of the earth have in common”可知,此處是表示英語在全世界的傳播是一件好事,故選D項。
20.答案與解析:B 結合下文“Maybe the popularity of English won't last that long either”可知,B項“但是它并沒有流行起來”符合語境,銜接上下文。
22.答案與解析:A 根據上下文,尤其是空后的“from the warmth of my car into my office building”可知,在寒冷的冬天,作者和小孫子從溫暖的車里急匆匆地進入她的辦公樓。 slide“滑行,滑動”;escape“逃跑”;slip“滑倒,溜”。
23.答案與解析:D 根據空前的“my office building”和空后的“a few work-related tasks I had to __24__”可知,此處表示原因,故選D項“因為”。regardless of“不管,不顧”;along with“除……
take care of “負責,處理”符合語境。get rid of“擺脫,丟棄”;make use of“利用”;catch hold of“抓住,拿著,握著,握住”。
abandon oneself to“陷入,沉湎于”;accustom oneself to“習慣”;adjust oneself to“適應,習慣”。
27.答案與解析:C 根據下文的“Honey,would you like a candy?” sympathetic“有同情心的”;tolerant“寬容的”;brilliant“聰穎的,技巧高的”。
28.答案與解析:B 根據下文的“with his eyes meeting mine, permission hanging in the air”可知,小孫子懷著疑問抬起頭看著作者,希望得到作者的同意。 guiltily“羞愧地”;merrily“快樂地”;gratefully“感激地”。
A turn on one's heel“急向后轉,突然轉身”為固定搭配,這里指小孫子轉身回到糖果盤那邊,故選A。
awkwardly“尷尬地”;confidently“自信地”;shyly“害羞地”。
38.答案與解析:will be brought 考查動詞的時態(tài)和語態(tài)。
分析句子結構可知,本句是“It is reported that...”
Dear John,
I'm writing to share one of my wonderful experiences with you.
Last weekend our school went on eco-travel to a lake surrounded by trees. All the way we drank in the scenery. The air was fresh, and the lake water was clear. From the travel, I find out the real meaning of eco-travel: As we enjoy the beauty of nature, we should protect harmony between humans and nature. Eco-travel should be like this: take nothing away but your good memory; leave nothing behind but all green trees and clean water.
I have come to love eco-travel and hope we can enjoy eco-travel together.
Yours,
Li Hua
Paragraph 1:
One old gentleman stayed, admiring the tablecloth. At the same time, he said to the young man, “What a coincidence. Many years ago my wife and I also owned such a tablecloth. But we lived in Vienna then.” On hearing these words, the young man told the old man about his encounter with the old woman in the house that snowy day. “Can it be true that she is alive?” asked the old man, tears streaming down his cheeks. “How can I find her?” Fortunately, the young man remembered her address.
Paragraph 2:
The young man drove the old man to that old woman's home. Together they knocked on her apartment door. When she opened it, both of them recognized each other immediately. Obviously, they were too surprised and excited to express themselves. With trembling hands, they hugged tightly. “I was told you had died. How did you find me?” the old woman said. “Thanks to that magical tablecloth,” the old man replied. The young man witnessed the tearful, joyful and thrilling reunion of the husband and wife.
