The ten-car subway train was adrned at the end f June in a tunnel in Queens. The artists appeared t use paint rllers t cver it alng ne side, frm tp t bttm, in an awful shade f pink with a brwn line.
Tagging (涂鴉) a train is ften less abut the art and mre abut the prize f marking smething that invlves risk and eches the riginal graffiti writers, wh blanketed subway trains, including the windws and seats inside, in the 1970s and 1980s.
“Mdern graffiti began in Philadelphia in the 1960s. But it became an art frm in New Yrk City,” says Eric Felisbret, authr f “Graffiti New Yrk”. “Graffiti benefited frm the ppularity f hip-hp glbally,” says Mr Felisbret. “Out f all the elements f hip-hp, graffiti is by far the mst then, all graffiti was illegal.”
In 2020 the Metrplitan Transprtatin Authrity (MTA), which runs the subway, spent $1.2m n cleaning. By the end f May 2022 it had already spent $1.1m. In all f 2021, 681 subway cars were “ruined”. This year mre than 700 cars have been. Mre than ne in ten subway cars had t be taken ut f service fr cleaning.
The recent spike in subway graffiti activity parallels the lifting f travel restrictins. The graffiti n trains usually gets cleaned r hidden quickly, s artists pst images f their wrk n scial media. Sharif Prfit, wh rganises the annual Graffiti Hall f Fame in Harlem, says he can always tell when the wrk is by smene frm anther cuntry: “It is nt n the same level.”
Tagging n the subway is dangerus. The live third rail is lethal (致命的) and he tunnels are dark. Trains can appear with little warning, s trespassers (不法進(jìn)入者) may have n way f aviding them. Tw French graffiti artists were killed by a train in Brklyn in April. “As sn as I heard where the bdies were fund, I knew they were taggers,” says Mr Felisbret.
The MTA remves any tagged train s as t avid encuraging ther peple. Passengers then have t wait lnger. That was the case recently, says Richard Davey, head f the MTA’s New Yrk City Transit system, when eight trains were ruined. The resulting delays affected thusands f cmmuters. “It’s ur gal t make sure we dn’t return t the 1970s,” he says, “whether it’s in ur statins r n ur cars.”
Graffiti n the subway began t die ut in the late 1980s. One frmer graffiti writer said it is almst shcking t see tagging there nw.
24.Why d graffiti artists tag a subway train?
A.Fr the prize f art cmpetitin.
B.T imitate the early graffiti creatrs.
C.T express their dissatisfactin with sciety.
D.In pursuit f artistic beauty.
25.What des the underlined wrd “spike” mean in Paragraph 5?

根據(jù)文章第二段“Tagging (涂鴉) a train is ften less abut the art and mre abut the prize f marking smething that invlves risk and eches the riginal graffiti writers, wh blanketed subway trains, including the windws and seats inside, in the 1970s and 1980s.(在火車上做涂鴉,往往與藝術(shù)無關(guān),更多的是為了給一些帶有風(fēng)險(xiǎn)的東西做標(biāo)記,這與最初的涂鴉作家的做法相呼應(yīng)。上世紀(jì)七八十年代,涂鴉作家在地鐵列車上涂滿了涂鴉,包括車窗和座位。)”可知,藝術(shù)家在火車上涂鴉是為了模仿早期的涂鴉創(chuàng)作者。故選B。
25.詞句猜測題。根據(jù)劃線詞上一段“In 2020 the Metrplitan Transprtatin Authrity (MTA), which runs the subway, spent $1.2m n cleaning. By the end f May 2022 it had already spent $1.1m. In all f 2021, 681 subway cars were “ruined”. This year mre than 700 cars have been. In the last tw years, tennis has taken ver ur clsets, ur screens and nw — ur living rms, furniture frm thrwn tennis balls.
At least that is the hpe f Belgian ec-designer Mathilde Wittck, wh fashins furniture frm thrwn tennis balls. Wittck’s chase lngues (躺椅) are entirely cushinless — save fr the filling f 500 precisely arranged tennis balls. Her ne-meter-lng benches are similarly few and far between, with sme 270 balls being bth stylish and structurally substantial.
Arund 300 millin tennis balls are prduced each year — and almst all f them end up in landfills, taking ver 400 years t decmpse (分解). Wittck estimates the lifecycle f a ball stands at just nine games, depending n the level f tennis being played.
It takes Wittck arund three t fur weeks t build a chair. Every ball is cut and dyed by hand, with clrs picked ut especially t fit the client’s space. It was thrugh much trial and errr that she was able t use the shape f the ball while masking sme f its all-t-easily- recgnized features. “I needed t find an assembly that changed the icnic appearance f the tennis balls,” she said. “It’s yellw and has these white lines. Hw d I deal with them?”
Wittck started t see the design’s pssibilities f the sprting equipment when she was studying at Central Saint Martins, an art schl in Lndn. Tday, she receives all her materials via dnatins frm tennis clubs. Cllectins began small — smetimes with just 10 tssed balls at a time — but quickly grew. Nw, Wittck wrks with the Federatin f Wallnia in Brussels, wh have ffered her their entire stck — arund 100,000. Hw lng will it last? “It’s enugh fr a few mnths,” she said. “If things get wild, maybe it will last nine mnths. Because I have a rhythm f cutting tennis balls. I can get thrugh 1,800 per week.”
28.Why are the numbers listed in paragraph 2?
A.T highlight a waste.B.T prmte a prduct.
C.T state the material f furniture.D.T shw tennis’ ppularity.
29.What functin des paragraph 3 act as?
A.A backgrund.B.An example.C.A definitin.D.A prf.
30.What des Wittck have t d t handle the thrwn tennis balls?
A.She cleans them cleverly.B.She asks her friends fr help.
C.She uses their characteristics.D.She adjusts their clrs accrdingly.
31.What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
A.Wittck’s wrk plans.B.Wittck’s stuff surces.

Envirnmental DNA (eDNA) has becme a crucial tl in eclgical research ver recent years. By analyzing water, sil, r ther envirnmental materials fr DNA pieces, researchers can tell that thusands f different species have been in an area withut having t bserve the actual species passing thrugh.
T date, this eDNA prcess has mstly been emplyed t detect marine (海洋的) creatures, insects, and ther wildlife. Hwever, accrding t a paper published in Nature Eclgy & Evlutin, this technique culd just as easily be applied t spt humans.
An internatinal team f researchers based at the University f Flrida, USA, demnstrated that human genmic (基因組的) infrmatin can be easily detected in eDNA samples cllected frm water, sand, and even the air. While this capability culd have practical applicatins, such as aiding in the search fr missing persns r mnitring public health, the researchers highlight significant mral cncerns. These cncerns include the lack f agreement frm individuals fr their DNA t be cllected, ptential breaches (侵犯) f privacy, and the risk f genetic infrmatin being used fr cmmercial purpses.
This issue is particularly challenging fr the field f eDNA, which relies n pen and easily accessible data. “It is standard practice in science t make these data publicly available. Hwever, this als means that if human infrmatin is nt screened ut, anyne culd access this infrmatin,” says senir authr Prfessr David Duffy, a wildlife disease genmics researcher at the University f Flrida. “This raises issues arund permissin. D we need t ask permissin t cllect these samples? Shuld we bring in sme cntrls t remve human genetic data?”
“Whenever we make a technlgical advancement, there are bth beneficial and cncerning ptential uses. This situatin is n different,” Duffy explains. “We are raising these issues early s that plicymakers and sciety have adequate time t develp suitable guidelines.”
32.What is the primary use f eDNA in eclgical research?
A.Identifying species present in an area.B.Mnitring species evlutin prcesses.
C.Imprving living cnditins fr wildlife.D.Sampling insects directly in their habitats.
33.Why is the accessibility f eDNA data a ptential prblem?
A.It ignres practical applicatins f eDNA data.
B.It may lead t unchecked genetic engineering.
C.It culd result in misuse f human genetic data.
D.It raises cncerns abut wildlife disease research.
34.What des Duffy suggest peple cncerned d?
A.T develp ptential applicatins.B.T sample genetic infrmatin.
C.T highlight advanced technlgy.D.T establish apprpriate regulatins.
35.What is the best title fr the text?

根據(jù)第一段“Envirnmental DNA (eDNA) has becme a crucial tl in eclgical research ver recent years. By analyzing water, sil, r ther envirnmental materials fr DNA pieces, researchers can tell that thusands f different species have been in an area withut having t bserve the actual species passing thrugh. (近年來,環(huán)境DNA (eDNA) 已成為生態(tài)學(xué)研究的重要工具。通過分析水、土壤或其他環(huán)境材料的DNA片段,研究人員無需觀察實(shí)際經(jīng)過的物種,就能判斷出某個(gè)地區(qū)曾經(jīng)有數(shù)千種不同的物種)”可知,eDNA在生態(tài)研究中的主要用途是識別某一地區(qū)存在的物種。故選A項(xiàng)。
根據(jù)第三段中“These cncerns include the lack f agreement frm individuals fr their DNA t be cllected, ptential breaches (侵犯) f privacy, and the risk f genetic infrmatin being used fr cmmercial purpses.(這些擔(dān)憂包括沒有得到個(gè)人對其DNA收集的同意,隱私可能遭到侵犯,以及遺傳信息被用于商業(yè)目的的風(fēng)險(xiǎn))”和第四段中“Hwever, this als means that if human infrmatin is nt screened ut, anyne culd access this infrmatin, (然而,這也意味著,如果人類信息沒有被篩選出來,任何人都可以訪問這些信息)”以及“This raises issues arund permissin. D we need t ask permissin t cllect these samples? Shuld we bring in sme cntrls t remve human genetic data? (這引發(fā)了關(guān)于許可的問題。我們是否需要征得許可才能收集這些樣本?我們是否應(yīng)該引入一些控制措施來刪除人類遺傳數(shù)據(jù)?)”可知,eDNA數(shù)據(jù)的可訪問性是一個(gè)潛在問題,因?yàn)樗赡軐?dǎo)致人類遺傳數(shù)據(jù)的濫用。故選C項(xiàng)。
34.細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)最后一段中Duffy的話“We are raising these issues early s that plicymakers and sciety have adequate time t develp suitable guidelines. (我們提前提出這些問題,以便政策制定者和社會有足夠的時(shí)間來制定合適的指南)”可知,Duffy建議相關(guān)人士制定適當(dāng)?shù)姆ㄒ?guī)。故選D項(xiàng)。
35.主旨大意題。通讀全文,結(jié)合第二段中“Hwever, accrding t a paper published in Nature Eclgy & Evlutin, this technique culd just as easily be applied t spt humans. (然而,根據(jù)發(fā)表在《自然·生態(tài)與進(jìn)化》雜志上的一篇論文,這項(xiàng)技術(shù)同樣可以很容易地應(yīng)用于檢測人類)”和第三段中“These cncerns include the lack f agreement frm individuals fr their DNA t be cllected, ptential breaches (侵犯) f privacy, and the risk f genetic infrmatin being used fr cmmercial purpses.(這些擔(dān)憂包括沒有得到個(gè)人對其DNA收集的同意,隱私可能遭到侵犯,以及遺傳信息被用于商業(yè)目的的風(fēng)險(xiǎn))”可知,文章主要介紹了eDNA在檢測人類方面的應(yīng)用及其引發(fā)的隱私和道德問題,故B項(xiàng)“eDNA: Human Detectin Meets Privacy Challenges(eDNA:人類檢測遭遇隱私挑戰(zhàn))”最能概括文章內(nèi)容,適合做文章標(biāo)題。

36.根據(jù)前文“British libraries are in crisis—again. The UK has lst ne in 20 since 2016, with 180 clsed in that time, a BBC investigatin has revealed. The mst disadvantaged areas are arund fur times mre likely t lse a library than the richest.(英國圖書館再次陷入危機(jī)。BBC的一項(xiàng)調(diào)查顯示,自2016年以來,英國每20家就有一家倒閉,其中180家倒閉。最貧困地區(qū)失去圖書館的可能性是最富裕地區(qū)的四倍。)” 可知,空前講述的是圖書館陷入困境的現(xiàn)狀,因此D選項(xiàng)“Meanwhile, funding fr libraries has halved since 2010. (與此同時(shí),自2010年以來,圖書館的資金減少了一半。)”可知,承接上文內(nèi)容,繼續(xù)說明陷入的困境,符合語境,并且與最后一段的最后一句“They need n-ging and cnsiderable funding(他們需要持續(xù)和大量的資金。)”呼吁公眾來資助圖書館相呼應(yīng)。故選D項(xiàng)。
37.根據(jù)前文“As the educatinal achievement gap between children frm the richest and prest backgrunds has grwn pst-COVID, the rle that libraries can play in imprving the ability t read and stimulating a lve f reading culdn’t be mre vital.(新冠肺炎疫情后,隨著最富裕和最貧困背景的兒童之間的教育成就差距越來越大,圖書館在提高閱讀能力和激發(fā)對閱讀的熱愛方面所能發(fā)揮的作用至關(guān)重要。)” 此處需要有轉(zhuǎn)折,將話題轉(zhuǎn)至圖書館其他的作用,因此選擇C項(xiàng)“But it is nt just bks that make them magical places.( 但不僅僅是書籍使它們成為神奇的地方。)可知,符合此推斷,起到上下文的承上啟下作用,上下文語意連貫。故選C項(xiàng)。
38.根據(jù)下文“The activities ffer desperately needed cmpany t islated parents, as well as inspiratins fr children.(這些活動為孤立的父母提供了迫切需要的陪伴,也為孩子們提供了靈感。)” 結(jié)合G選項(xiàng)“Where else can yu find craft wrkshps, Leg, and authr events, all fr free?(你還能在哪里找到免費(fèi)的手工作坊、樂高積木和作家活動?)”
39.根據(jù)前文“What’s mre, if yu dn’t have access t the Internet r a printer, if yu struggle with English r can’t keep warm in winter, libraries are nt simply smewhere t brrw bks.(更重要的是,如果你沒有互聯(lián)網(wǎng)或打印機(jī),如果你努力學(xué)習(xí)英語或在冬天不能保暖,圖書館不僅僅是借書的地方。)”以及后文的“Abve all”開始講圖書館其他的好處可知,此空還在接著前文的話題在講述圖書館的優(yōu)點(diǎn),因此E選項(xiàng)“Yu can even spend a whle day there withut buying a cup f tea.(你甚至無需花錢點(diǎn)一杯茶,就可以在圖書館待上一整天)”可知,符合此推斷,起到上下文的承上啟下作用。故選E項(xiàng)。
40.根據(jù)前文“Despite all these benefits, funding fr libraries is never a pririty, defeated by the mre urgent demands f healthcare and schls.(盡管有這些好處,但圖書館的資金從來都不是優(yōu)先考慮的問題,醫(yī)療保健和學(xué)校的資金需求更為迫切。)” 后文的“that message”的指代對象應(yīng)該也是資助圖書館,而且在所選擇的句子中必然會出現(xiàn),因此選項(xiàng)F項(xiàng)“Hwever, prperly resurced, they can help relieve the pressures n bth.(然而,如果可以得到充足的資源支持,圖書館完全有能力緩解這兩方面的壓力)”可知,起到上下文的承上啟下作用,F(xiàn)選項(xiàng)中的“bth”也與上文的“healthcare and schls”相呼應(yīng)。故選F項(xiàng)。

由T date可知,句子時(shí)態(tài)用現(xiàn)在完成時(shí),主語the hrse face skirt n Duyin是單數(shù),因此空格處用has attracted,故填has attracted。

If I hadn’t been a failed vilinist I might never have becme a writer.
When I was in furth grade, the public schl I attended had a cveted rchestra prgram. I signed up t learn the vilin, alng with my friend Irene Cervantes. We were bth bsessed with the vilin and the prspect f being in the rchestra. Every week, Irene and I walked tgether thrugh ur wrking-class neighbrhd t ur befre-schl music lessns, prudly hlding ur black vilin cases.
Mr. Baumgartner, the rchestra teacher, was very strict. He emphasized that if anything happened t the instrument we played we’d be cut frm the prgram because the schl culd nt affrd t replace it. We all understd.
I wasn’t very gd at the vilin. N matter, destiny intervened and the terrible thing happened: I was practicing at hme when the bridge ppped ff my vilin and flew acrss the rm, the strings cllapsing befre my eyes.
Terrified f Mr. Baumgartner’s reactin, and having n idea this was a cmmn vilinist’s mishap (because the bridge is held in place by the tensin f the strings), I tried t fix it. I tipted int the garage and secured the bridge back in place with glbs f an unfamiliar glue, making sure it wuld never, ever, pp ff again. It was nly slightly crked. I prayed that Mr. Baumgartner wuldn’t ntice.
Of curse, he did. And when I saw the clr drain frm his face, I knew my fate was sealed. Sadly, he patted me n the back and tld me that maybe I culd jin the rchestra next year. When I cried, he suggested that I jin singing club, which ften sang during assemblies with the rchestra.
I did switch t singing club, where I stayed, thinking I’d fund my place. As luck wuld have it, the elementary schl glee club autmatically fed int the junir high chrus. Instead f a vilinist, I wuld be a singer in an rchestra f vices. Dn’t be cnfused. I didn’t have a gd vice, but in the midst f s many thers, I culd blend.

One Mnday after a big perfrmance, my English teacher asked if anyne was interested in writing an article abut his/ her singing experience. I raised my hand almst instantly, thinking it was a perfect pprtunity t share my unique jurney frm a failed vilinist t a chrus member. In the article, I described hw my accident with the vilin had unexpectedly led me t discver a new passin in singing, even thugh my vice wasn’t ideal fr singing alne. The piece was well-received, and it dawned n me that perhaps I had fund my true calling in writing abut my experiences.
I saw Irene Cervantes years later at a high schl reunin. She smiled warmly when she recgnized me and asked abut my life after schl. I tld her abut my explratin int writing and hw it had becme a significant part f my life. She admitted that she had always envied my curage t switch paths, even thugh she had excelled in the rchestra. “Yu knw,” she said, “I ften wnder what might have been if I had faced a similar challenge that frced me t explre ther talents.” It was then I realized that smetimes, life’s departures can lead us t destinies we never imagined, shaping us int wh we are meant t be.
