Friends always ask why I, a middle-aged wman with n athletic talent, travel t perilus places — the jungles f Thailand r Brne, fr example, where the water is ften unsafe and the fd risky; places with infectius diseases, pisnus snakes and the wildest animals; sme places where the lcals are just a few generatins past headhunting.
I never knw hw t answer. My travel decisins assumed a new gravity nine years ag after I suffered a strke. T prevent anther strke, my dctrs tld me, I’d have t take dangerusly high levels f bld thinner (血液稀釋劑) fr the rest f my life and any travel wuld be risky.
I had t think abut what was imprtant t me: family, f curse, and friends. But then what? N matter hw many times I thught abut it, n bucket list was cmplete withut travel. Then I had t decide hw I might manage the risk. I had t decide hw lucky I felt.
My return t travel after my strke came in baby steps. The first real test f my travel curage came nine mnths after my strke when I jined my husband, Jack, n a business trip t China. After we’d tured the remains f a Tang dynasty temple n a high muntain, Jack wanted t ride dwn n a tbggan (長雪橇).
Befre the strke it wuld’ve seemed like fun. But nw? I hesitated. My mental klaxn (高音喇叭) screamed warnings abut the cnsequences f a cut, a fall, and a crash. Then, gaining cnfidence frm wh knws where, I lwered myself carefully int the tbggan, which marked my adventure travel cmeback.
In the years since then, I’ve traveled abut twenty-five percent f the time. Thrugh it all, my lucks held ut — n deadly falls, n car accidents r serius infectins. Fr me, adventure travel is a risk wrth taking. Travel bradens my wrld and keeps me cnnected t nature. What’s mre, saying “yes” t travel keeps me cnnected t myself.
