Originally frm Brantfrd, Ontari, Canada, Wayne Gretzky began playing hckey when he was just three years ld. His father, Walter Gretzky, dedicated (致力于) his life t making sure Wayne had everything he needed t becme a successful hckey player. Walter build a backyard rink (溜冰場(chǎng)) full with bards and lights s he culd help Wayne practice at night.
Walter spent cuntless hurs n the backyard rink with Wayne and his brthers and taught him imprtant insights t the game. At the age f six, Wayne Gretzky was playing yuth hckey in a league with bys a few years lder than him. In 1977, Gretzky was the yungest player and leading screr at the Junir Wrld Cup turnament held in Mntreal.
Isinbayeva was enrlled (招收) by her parents in gymnastics schl at age 4, but a grwth spurt when she was 15 suddenly made her t tall t cmpete effectively in the sprt; she eventually reached a height f 1.73 meters. Ple-vault cach Yevgeny Trfimv invited her t try that sprt, and the next seasn, in July 1998, she vaulted 4 metres. She wn the 1999 wrld yuth title and the 2000 wrld junir title, and in 2001 she brke bth indr and utdr junir wrld recrds.
Isinbayeva, wh develped a reputatin fr calm cnfidence and fr jumping her highest at imprtant cmpetitins, was dubbed “Bubka in a skirt” by Russian sprtswriters wh deemed her prlific (得分多的) recrd —setting reminiscent f (使人想起的) frmer men’s wrld-recrd hlder Sergey Bubka.
