A Simple Thank
I have been in the teaching prfessin mre than thirty years, and ne f the best teachers I have ever knwn was Mr. Rwe. I was lucky enugh t c-teach furth grade with him.

Steven culdn’t stand schl. He didn’t like being picked last fr kickball. He didn’t like the kids wh raised their hands and knew all the answers, and mst imprtantly, he didn’t like himself.
The first day he walked int Mr. Rwe’s classrm, he ignred the ther students, lking angry and annyed, and slid int his chair, kncking a cuple f textbk nt the flr.
Mr. Rwe walked ver t him and tuched Steven’s shulder, but Steven pulled away. Nevertheless, Mr. Rwe welcmed him: “Hi, Steven. I’m happy yu are in my class. We are gnna have a great year.” Steven lked arund the rm as if Mr. Rwe must be mistaken. N teacher in his right mind wuld want Steven t be part f his classrm.
S, while Mr. Rwe seemed cheerful and relaxed that day f schl, it seemed like Steven was angry and cnfused.
That day after classes, Mr. Rwe chse Steven t pitch the kickball at recess. “Hey, Steven,” Mr. Rwe cmmented, “Yu are gd at pitching. Let me shw yu my secret trick.” Mr. Rwe taught Steven ne f the tricks that nt a single kid culd perfrm. Steven learned fast and did quite well! Everyne cheered fr him!
After the kickball, Steven sat as clser t Mr. Rwe in classes as he culd. When a questin was asked, Steven lit up; he knew the answer! He raised his hands. When he answered the questin, his vice shk. Hwever, he gt the answer right! He said, with Mr. Rwe, his days f the furth grade prmised wnderful.
That is nt t say that every day went smthly, but it was evident that Steven grew t lve Mr. Rwe mre and mre with each passing day.

“Wanted: Vilin. Can’t pay much. Cntact…”
I rarely read the classified advertisements, s why did I ntice that ne? I laid the paper n my lap and clsed my eyes, remembering what had happened many years befre, during the Great Depressin when my family struggled t make a living n ur farm. I, t, had wanted a vilin.
When my lder twin sisters began shwing an interest in music, Harriet Anne learned t play Grandma’s pian, while Suzanne turned t Daddy’s vilin. Simple tunes became lvely meldies. My baby brther danced; Daddy hummed and Mther whistled. I just listened.
When my arms grew lng enugh, I tried t play Suzanne’s vilin. Oh, hw I wanted ne! But I knew it was ut f the questin.
One evening as the twins played in the schl rchestra. I clsed my eyes tight t capture the picture firmly in my mind. Smeday, I’ll sit up there, I vwed silently.
It was nt a gd year. At harvest the crps didn’t bring as much as we had hped. Yet even thugh times were hard, I culdn’t wait any lnger t ask, “Daddy, may I have a vilin f my wn?”
“Can’t yu use Suzanne’s?”
“I’d like t be in the rchestra t, and we can’t bth use the same vilin at the same time.”
Daddy’s face lked sad. That night, and many fllwing nights, I heard him remind Gd in ur family prayers, “… and Lrd, Mary Lu wants her wn vilin.”
One evening we all sat rund the table. The twins and I studied. Mther sewed and Daddy wrte a letter t his friend, Gerge Finkle, in Clumbus, Ohi. Mr Finkle, Daddy said, was a fine vilinist.
When Daddy received a letter frm Clumbus a few weeks later, he asked me, “Mary Lu, d yu want t g with me t visit Mr Finkle?”
He drve us t Clumbus and we came t a fine, ld huse. A tall man pened the dr. He and Daddy heartily shk hands, bth talking at nce.
“Mary Lu, I’ve been hearing things abut yu. Yur Daddy has arranged a surprise fr yu!” He picked up a case, pened it, lifted ut a vilin and started t play. The meldy surged and spke like waterfalls. Oh, t play like him, I thught.
Finishing the piece, he turned t Daddy. “I fund it in a pawnshp(當(dāng)鋪)fr seven dllars. It’s a gd vilin. Mary Lu shuld be able t make a beautiful music with it.” Then he handed the vilin t me.
