“Dad,” I called, but my father was watching the ballns.
“It's a killdeer(北美喧鵒).” I turned t see a silver- haired ld wman. “It has a nest here smewhere,” she said. “In the parking area?” I asked. She ndded firmly. “It was a nesting place befre it became a parking area. N ne tld the killdeer abut the balln festival!”
“Jack!” Dad called “Isn’t it time yu went dwn t meet Mr. J?”
“I have gt t g.” I said. But the wman pinted with her walking stick. There, n the grund was a perfect clutch(窩) f speckled eggs, lking like pebbles. They were almst in the path f cars, trucks, mtrbikes and stmping feet.
Screech! The parent bird was back, its wing all twisted again. “Jack!” Dad called again. “The ballns are ready t launch.”
“Dad! I am…” A truck rared ver the hill. Brakes screamed dust flew. “What’s the matter?” asked Dad angrily frm the truck.
