⊕(2019·廈門一中高三模擬)Althugh it is less ften read than such Wells' nvels as The War f the Wrlds, the basic stry f The Island f Dr Mreau is very wellknwn thrugh several extremely lse film adaptatins (改編). Prendick, a British scientist, has an accident at sea—and by chance finds himself n a mysterius island where Dr Mreau and his assistant Mntgmery are engaged in strange experiments f turning animals int humans.
Wells was a scial refrmer, and his nvels reflected (反映) his thughts and theries abut human sciety. Much f Wells' writing cncerns (either directly r indirectly) scial class, but Mreau deals with the thennewly advanced thery f evlutin (進化)—and then wrks t relate hw that thery influences man's belief in Gd. Wells smetimes mentined this in his nvels, but nwhere in his wrk is this line f thught mre clearly and specifically seen than here.
Smetimes Wells tries t influence his readers strngly, while n ther ccasins, he des it gently. But in The Island f Dr Mreau, Wells achieves a perfect balance f the tw extremes. It is an impressive achievement, and in this sense I cnsider Mreau pssibly the best f Wells' wrks. The nvel is as interesting fr the stry it tells as it is fr its themes that are still very imprtant tday.
Mreau is nt as hrrific as Wells' many ther nvels—he ften included hrrr and cruelty in his science fictin. Still, this is nt a bk that yu can read and then put away: it stays in yur mind in a mst disturbing way. Strngly recmmended.
16.We learn frm Paragraph 2 that Wells________.
A.expressed his ideas abut sciety in his nvels
B.didn't mentin the thery f evlutin in Mreau
C.used his pen t fight fr human rights
D.paid little attentin t scial develpments
答案:A 細節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第二段第一句中的“his nvels reflected (反映) his thughts and theries abut human sciety”可知,威爾斯的小說反映了他的社會思想和理論,故選A項。
17.What can be cncluded frm the text?
A.Mst f Wells' nvels remain unknwn.
B.Wells was a science fictin writer.
C.The Island f Dr Mreau is a hrrr stry.
D.Wells' writing style is humrus.
答案:B 細節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)最后一段第一句中的“he ften ... in his science fictin”可知,威爾斯是一名科幻小說家。
18.The authr's attitude twards The Island f Dr Mreau is that f________.
A.dubt B.uncncern

答案:C 推理判斷題。根據(jù)第三段第三句中的“and in this sense I cnsider Mreau pssibly the best f Wells' wrks”和文章最后一句“Strngly recmmended.”可知,作者對《莫羅博士島》這部作品評價甚高,大為贊賞。
