Pinocchio may be just a children’s fairy tale, but Spanish scientists at the University of Granada recently investigated this so-called “Pinocchio effect” and found that our noses don’t grow when we tell a lie, but actually shrink a bit.
Dr. Gómez Milán and his team developed a lie detector test that used thermography (體溫計(jì)) to tell if people were lying and found that whenever participants in their research were being untruthful, the temperature of the tip of their nose dropped up to 1.2℃, while the temperature of their forehead increased up to 1.5℃. Scientist also found that drop in temperature at nose level actually caused it to slightly shrink, although the difference is undetected by the human eye.
“One has to think in order to lie, which rises the temperature of the forehead,” Dr. Gómez Milán explained the findings. “At the same time, we feel anxious, which lowers the temperature of the nose.” For this study, researchers asked a number of 60 students to perform various tasks while their temperature is scanned by technology. One of these tasks required making a 3 to 4 minutes call to their parents or a friend and telling a significant lie. Participants had to make up the lie themselves during the call. Interestingly, this lie detector picked up the temperature difference in 80 percent of the test subjects, which is a better rate of success than that of any modern lie detector.
“With this method we have achieved to increase accuracy”, said Dr. Gómez Milán, who added that law enforcement interviewers could one day combine other lie detection technology with thermal imaging to achieve better results.

26. How did Dr. Gómez Milán feel about the lie detector?
A. Doubtful. B. Surprised.
C. Confident. D. Puzzled.
27. What lesson can we learn from the text?
A. A lie will travel very hard.
B. Many ways to bring a liar to light.
C. A lie never lives to be old.

Consider going eastward, you will see mountains, forests and thousands of lakes, as well as wide rivers and large cities. On the 15th June I set foot off the airplane and into Calgary, Canada. I’ve never been to this side of the world before and I had some strange expectations when I could only see fields and no cityscape in view from my plane window during landing. However, as we got closer and closer to the airport the city came into view.
Phew! I sighed of relief as I’m a real city-goer. We were greeted by my girlfriend’s parents and whisked away to the main city. The large amount of greenery in Calgary’s city makes it a completely different city to visit and I advise if anybody is around this side of the world, it’s surely an interesting visit. It not only brings us good feelings, it also makes you fall in love with this city. Despite all the things we’ve done here, the thing that blew me away the most was the Canadian woodlands and mountains just a few hours outside of Calgary. The highlight for me was risking travelling to the small town of Fernie and hiking into the woods up to a small waterfall where the water was so clear we could just drink straight from the stream.
The time away from the main city had a great holiday feel and gave me time to recover after a busy university year. It’s been a great experience being in the Canadian mountains and woodlands and it taught me the importance of just having some time for yourself! So whatever you guys are doing this summer, make sure you take some time out to relax, rest and recharge. Maybe you will get a much more comfortable trip when you jump out of the busy work.
28. Which of the following best describes the author’s feeling while landing?

D. Clear water from the stream.
30. The thing that impressed the author the most was _______.
A. the Canadian people
B. the Canadian snacks
C. the Canadian entertainment
D. the Canadian woodlands and mountains
31. What can be inferred about the author’s travel experience?
A. He needs relaxation from his busy life.

C. He is in great love with his girlfriend.
D. He is enthusiastic about work.

Organic food, grown without artificial chemicals, is increasingly popular nowadays. Consumers have been willing to pay up to twice as much for goods with organic labels. However, if you think paying a little more for organic food gets you a more nutritious and safer product, you might want to save your money. A study led by researchers at Stanford University says that organic products aren't necessarily more nutritious, and they’re no less likely to suffer from disease-causing bacteria, either.
The latest results, published in the Annuals of Internal Medicine, suggest that buyers may be wasting their money. “We did not find strong evidence that organic food is more nutritious or healthier,” says Dr. Crystal Smith-Spangler from Stanford. “So, consumers shouldn’t assume that one type of food has a lower risk or is safer. ”
For their new study Smith-Spangler and her colleagues conducted a review of two categories of research, including 17 studies that compared health outcomes between consumers of organic against traditional food products, and 223 studies that analyzed the nutritional content of the foods, including key vitamins, minerals and fats.
While the researchers found little difference in nutritional content, they did find that organic fruit and vegetables were 20% less likely to have chemicals remaining on the surfaces. Neither organic nor traditional foods showed levels of chemicals high enough to go beyond food safety standards. And both organic and traditional meats, such as chicken and pork, were equally likely to be harmed by bacteria at very low rates. The researchers did find that organic milk and chicken contained higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, a healthy fat also found in fish that can reduce the risk of heart disease. However, these nutritional differences were too small, and the researchers were unwilling to make much of them until further studies confirm the trends.
Organic food is produced with fewer chemicals and more natural-growing practices, but that doesn't always translate into a more nutritious or healthier product. The U.S. Department of Agriculture(USDA) states that “whether you buy organic food or not, finding the freshest foods available may have the biggest effect on taste.” Fresh food is at least as good as anything marketed as organic.
32. What does the new research question?
A. Whether organic food should replace traditional food.
B. Whether organic food has been overpriced by farmers.
C. Whether organic food is grown with less harmful chemicals.
D. Whether organic food is really more nutritious and healthier.
33. What did Smith-Spangler and her colleagues find?
A. Organic food could reduce the risk of heart disease.
B. Traditional food was grown with more natural methods.
C. Both organic and traditional food they examined were safe.
D. There was not a presence of any forms of bacteria in organic food.
34. Which of the following is relatively healthier according to the passage?
