Befre lng, they encuntered an especially significant find n the grunds: a large bne frm a 34-millin-year-ld whale skeletn! This led the pair t launch the huge prject f uncvering the rest f the bnes. After tw mnths f hard wrk, they’ve managed t find the animal’s skull (顱骨).
“Assuming the entire skeletn is present, it may require several years fr us t have the entire animal back in the lab,” Andrew explained.
Lindsey secured a research schlarship t persist in her fssil-digging expeditins alngside her instructr. Her enthusiasm fr the prject was at an all-time high, thugh she had never imagined a childhd pastime wuld lead her dwn this rad. “We wuld g ut and pick up shark teeth and fssil shells, but we never knew anyne that culd tell us anything abut them,” she recalled. “We just thught they were cl.”
“The Research Fellws Prgram allws Lindsey t gain real-wrld experience in scientific research and even present that research at prfessinal cnferences,” Andrew said. “It’s a nce-in-a-lifetime pprtunity fr a high schl student t stand ut when applying t cllege and maybe even discver a new career path.”

Tday, petry and science are ften cnsidered t be cmpletely separate career paths. Hwever, that wasn’t always the case. Thrugh wrkshps and a new science-petry jurnal, called Cnsilience, Illingwrth is helping scientists t translate their latest results int pems that can attract appreciatin frm thse utside f their immediate scientific field.
Stephany Mazn, a scientist frm the University f Helsinki, participated in ne f Illingwrth’s wrkshps where she and fellw scientists were tasked with writing haikus that highlighted water, a cmmn theme in their research. “It was a lt f fun, and surprisingly easy t write the pem,” Mazn says. She plans t cntinue writing. “We d harm urselves t think that scientists can’t be artistic and that art can’t be used t cmmunicate scientific ideas,” Mazn says.
That viewpint is eched by Illingwrth, wh thinks science cmmunicatin initiatives are t ften dminated by public lectures with their hands-ff PwerPint slides. “Actually, when science cmmunicatin invlves writing and sharing pems, it invites a tw-way dialgue between experts and nnexperts,” he says. Scientist-pet Manjula Silva, an educatr at Imperial Cllege Lndn, agrees, nting that petry simplifies cmplex scientific cncepts int language that everyne can understand.
Scientists and pets are bth trying t understand the wrld and cmmunicate that understanding with thers. The distinctin between scientists and pets is less than peple might think. We’re all just peple with hpefully really interesting things t say and t share.
