My wife and I were away fr a lng weekend, celebrating ur first wedding anniversary (周年紀(jì)念日) at a ppular hliday center in the Shawangunk Muntain range. It was a beautiful place.I was training fr a fall marathn (馬拉松) at the time. S, I was a little anxius abut the 14 miles f running I had planned fr Sunday. Nt abut being able t run 14 miles, but abut being able t d s in an unfamiliar place. We were surrunded by scenic wilderness (風(fēng)景優(yōu)美的荒野), accrding t the manager f ur htel, including 85 miles f trails (小路). Ding an easy 4-mile run was n prblem. But I was very certain that I'd get lst trying t have a 14-mile run ut there.
But yu've gt t d what yu've gt t d, s I set ut early?Sunday mrning. The sun was shining, which was nice. If I was ging t get lst, at least it wuld happen in fine weather. The first few miles went well, despite a dead end and sme backtracking. Then I saw them: A grup f six r eight runners, n the same trail, headed right fr me.As we neared each ther, we exchanged the usual nds and greetings (問候). Then I stpped and asked, “Umm ... Hw far are yu ging?”“20 miles,” ne f them said. “We just started.”I eagerly said, “Yu mind if I ... uh ... jin yu fr part f it?”“Sure.”S I did. Off we went. And what fllwed were 10 f the nicest miles I think I've ever run.

Time flew by, and my new friends — all lcals — knew the trails well. I began t find that the trees n bth sides f the trails were beautiful. Even the speed f ur running was just right. We chatted here and there, as they tld me abut the trails and themselves. They asked abut me and my wife, my wrk and my running, s we talked abut thse things t. Just like that, my mrning run became a grup activity. And it was happening s quickly withut questin. I really did enjy it.
After tw hurs, ur grup came t a place where the trail divided int tw parts. The lcals tld me they were ging left t finish their 20-mile run; I needed t turn right, which wuld get me back t the htel after just arund 14 miles. I thanked them. They replied, “N prblem” and “Have a gd ne”. As I ran ff, ne f them turned t call ut, “Happy anniversary!” Then they disappeared frm sight.
