Grandpa’s Old Chair
It was the annual cleaning day fr the family. Jhn and his mm were busy cleaning the huse. They cleaned upstairs, dwnstairs, inside and utside until everything was sptless. Exhausted, they sank int the cuch. Just then, Jhn’s mm nticed an ld chair that was faded and wrn. That chair was fr Jhn’s grandpa, wh had lived with them since Jhn’s grandma had died.
“Jhn, cme and help me.” Jhn’s mm sprang t her feet. “We’ll take the chair t the curb (路邊). The garbage truck is picking up n ur blck tmrrw.”
As they attempted t mve the chair, Jhn’s grandpa made his way thrugh the dr. Seeing what was happening, he quickly tried t stp them. “N!” he prtested. “Yu can’t take my chair.”
“But it’s s ld...” Jhn’s mm argued. “We’ll buy yu a new ne.”
“N,” he persisted, trying t push his chair back int place.
Jhn’s mm finally let g f the chair and left the rm. With a sigh f relief, the ld man sank int his chair and clsed his eyes.
“Grandpa, why wn’t yu let us get rid f the chair?” Jhn asked.
“Yu dn’t understand, Jhn.” His grandpa shk his head and said, “I sat in this chair with yur grandma right here when I asked her t marry me. And I sat in this chair the night yur father was brn. Many years later,” Grandpa’s vice brke, “I sat in this chair when the dctr called and tld me that yur grandma was ill. I was lst withut her, but the chair gave me cmfrt and warmth.” The ld man’s sadness seemed t grw as he recalled that fateful day.
“I understand nw.” Jhn lked at his grandpa and said, “This is nt just any ld chair. It is mre like a friend.”
“Yes,” he ndded. “We’ve gne thrugh a lt tgether.”
Hwever, that night, when Jhn and his grandpa were asleep, Jhn’s mm and dad carried the chair utside. It was a starless night. Snw fell silently frm the black sky and cvered Grandpa’s chair in a blanket f white.
