Listening t the radi is better at preventing dementia (癡呆) than exercise, a new study suggests. Dementia is ne f Britain’s biggest killers, with ne in ten male deaths caused by the neurdegenerative (神經(jīng)退行性的) cnditin, and ne in eight wmen.
But scientists have lng believed that sme hbbies and activities can prtect the brain by delaying and ptentially even cmpletely prtecting against the disease.
A large-scale review frm scientists at Peking University in Beijing reviewed 38 different studies lking at what pastimes are mst beneficial. The data included mre than tw millin peple and fund that leisure activities were effective at prtecting against the disease, lwering the risk by 17 percent, but sme hbbies were fund t be better than thers. Mental activity — which includes reading, writing, watching televisin, listening t the radi and playing a musical instrument — was fund t reduce the risk by 23 percent. In cntrast, physical activity, including walking, running, swimming, dancing and yga, lwered risk by just 17 percent. Hwever, this was still better than peple whse leisure time was spent ding scial activities like visiting friends, ging t church r vlunteering, as this saw risk drp by just 7 percent.
“This meta-analysis suggests that being active has benefits, and there are plenty f activities that are easy t incrprate int daily life that may be beneficial t the brain,” said study authr Dr Lin Lu f Peking University. “Our research fund that leisure activities may reduce the risk f dementia. Future studies shuld include larger sample sizes and lnger fllw-up time t reveal mre links between leisure activities and dementia.”
Dr Sara Imarisi, head f research at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “There isn’t any cnclusive evidence fr particular brain training prgrammes r activities that are especially gd fr staying sharp, but activities that are mentally challenging, sciable and als enjyable are likely t be better fr the brain than spending time alne r engaged in passive hbbies.”
