She was kind. People always seemed to feel comfortable in her presence. For years, she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home with her where she taught a ceramic class. On one summer day, Mama told me to get changed and meet her at the car.I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything? I imagined the cool lake water. Annoyed, I climbed into the car and slammed the door shut. We sat in silence. I was too upset to make conversation.“Tasha, would you like to know where we are going” Mama asked calmly.“No” I said.“We are going to volunteer at a children's shelter today. I have been there before and I think it will benefit you,” she explained. When we reached the shelter, Mama rang the doorbell. Moments later, we were greeted by a woman. She led us to the front room where all of the children were playing. I noticed a baby whose body was scarred with iron marks. I was told it was because she wouldn't stop crying. The majority of the children had noticeable physical scars. Others hid their emotional wounds. As I took in my surroundings, I felt a gentle tug on my shirt. I looked down to see a little girl looking up at me. “Hi. You want to play dolls with me?” she asked. I looked over at Mama for reinforcement. She smiled and nodded. I turned back and said, “Sure.” Her tiny hand reached up and held mine, as if to comfort me.My mom taught me a worthy lesson that summer. I returned to the shelter with her several times. During those visits, some of the children shared their troubled past with me and I learned to be grateful for what I had. Today as I try to instill (逐漸灌輸) these values in my own child, I reflect back to that experience. It was a time that I will never forget.1The author admired her mom for ________.Aher kindness to others   Bher excellent teachingCher quality of honesty   Dher positive attitude to life2When she was asked to go out with her mom, the author was ________.Aexcited       Bsurprised  Cangry       Dworried3From the passage we learn most children in the shelter ________.Awere often punished by staff   Bweren't allowed to go outsideCwere once treated badly   Dall suffered from mental illness4The underlined word “reinforcement” in the passage is closest in meaning to “________”Atruth        Bsupport  Ccomfort       Dhelp C(2016·四川省南充市第三次適應(yīng)性考試)Two recent studies have found that punishment is not the best way to influence behavior. One showed that adults are much more cooperative if they work in a system based on rewards. Researchers at Harvard University in the United States and the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden did the study. They had about two hundred college students play a version of the game known as the Prisoner's Dilemma. The game is based on the tension (緊張氣氛) between the interests of an individual and a group. The students played in groups of four. Each player could win points for the group, so they would all gain equally. But each player could also reward or punish each of the other three players, at a cost to the punisher.Harvard researcher David Rand says the most successful behavior proved to be cooperation. The groups that rewarded it the most earned about twice as much in the game as the groups that rewarded it the least. And the more a group punished itself, the lower its earnings were. The group with the most punishment earned twenty-five percent less than the group with the least punishment. The study appeared last month in the journal Science. The other study involved children. It was presented last month in California at a conference on violence and abuse. Researchers used intelligence tests given to two groups. More than eight hundred children aged two to four the first time they were tested. More than seven hundred children aged five to nine. The two groups were retested four years later, and the study compared the results with the first test. Both groups contained children whose parents used physical punishment and children whose parents did not. The study says the IQs — or intelligence quotients — of the younger children who were not spanked were five points higher than those who were. In the older group, the difference was almost three points.Murray Strauss from the University of New Hampshire worked with Mallie Paschall from the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation. Professor Strauss has written extensively about physical punishment of children. He says the more they are spanked, the slower their mental development. He also looked at average IQs in other nations and found them lower where spanking was more common.1Which could be the best title of the passage?APunishmentBThe Best Way to Influence BehaviorCPunishment or Reward: Which Works Better on Behavior?DTwo Recent Studies2The underlined word “spanked” probably means “______”Awon BpunishedCtested Dpraised3According to the passage, the researchers may agree the best way to influence behavior is ________.Arewarding good behaviorBcorrecting bad behaviorCpunishing badly-behaved childrenDpraising well-behaved children4The author develops the passage ________.Ain order of timeBin order of importanceCby describing his experiencesDby using quotations (引證) and statistics   DYou are a new manager at the American branch of your German firm in Chicago. With a few minutes to spare between meetings, you go to get a quick cup of coffee.“Hey, David, how are you?” one of the senior partners at the firm asks you.“Good, thank you, Dr Greer,” you reply. You've really been wanting to make a connection with the senior leadership at the firm, and this seems like a great opportunity. But as you start to think of something to say, your American colleague breaks in to steal your spotlight.“So Arnold,” your colleague says to your boss, in such a casual manner that it makes your German soul cringe (畏縮), “So what's your Super bowl prediction? I mean, you're a Niners fan, rightThe conversation moves on, and you walk silently back to your desk with your coffee. You know how important small talk is in the US, and you feel jealous of people who can do it well. There's nothing small about the role that small talk plays in American professional culture. People from other countries are often surprised at how important small talk is in the US and how naturally and comfortably people seem to do it—with peers, men, women, and even with superiors. You can be the most technically skilled worker in the world, but your ability to progress in your job in the United States is highly dependent on your ability to build and maintain positive relationships with people at work. And guess what skill is critical for building and maintaining these relationships? Small talk. What can you do if you are from another culture and want to learn to use small talk in the US to build relationships and establish trust? Work hard to hone (磨煉) your own version of American-style small talk. Watch how others do it. You don't have to imitate what they do; in fact, that would likely backfire because people would see you as inauthentic (假的,不可信的). But if you can develop your own personal version, that can go a long way toward making you feel comfortable and competent.1The author introduces the topic of the passage by ________.Aoffering a plot  Bdescribing an interesting sceneCmaking comparisons  Dtelling a small joke2.What do we know about German people?AThey don't make so much small talk.BThey hate making small talk.CThey usually make small talk in work breaks.DThey are good at making small talk too. 3.What makes people from other countries surprised in American professional culture?AAmerican workers' ability to make progress.BAmerican workers' attitude towards superiors.CThe special meaning of small talk.DThe role small talk plays in work settings.4What does “backfire” underlined in the last paragraph mean?AHave a warm atmosphere  BHave the opposite effectCHave a good result  DHave a hard time 第二節(jié)(5小題;每小題2.5分,滿分12.5)閱讀下面短文,從短文后的選項(xiàng)中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項(xiàng)。選項(xiàng)中有兩項(xiàng)為多余選項(xiàng)。 Are you suffering from FOMO—that is, Fear Of Missing Out? When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them. One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boyhis name was Bernardhad interested her very much.I wish you could see him, she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. He is such a help to his mother.
