  20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA
ACTIVE AND SHRAE
Have yu ever read any science fictin? Wh are the writers? What are the stries abut?
READ AND EXPLORE
Read an extract frm 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne and find ut what happened t “I”,the prfessr in the stry.
Fact FileJules Verne(1828—1905),a French nvelist, was called the “Father f Science Fictin”. He wrte a widely ppular series f science fictins, including Jurney t the Centre f the Earth(1864),20,000 Leagues Under the Sea(1870),and Arund the Wrld in Eighty Days(1873).
The crash was s vilent that I have n clear recllectin f falling frm the bat. Might I hpe t be saved? The darkness was intense. I saw a black mass disappearing in the east. It was the bat! I was lst.“Help, help!”I shuted, swimming twards the bat in desperatin. I was sinking! I culdn’t breathe! “Help!” My muth filled with water;I struggled against being drawn deeper, deeper dwn. Suddenly I felt myself quickly drawn up t the surface f the sea;and I heard these wrds:“If master wuld be s gd as t hld nt my shulder, master wuld swim with much greater ease.” I grabbed my faithful Cnseil’s arm with ne hand. “Is it yu?” said I. “Myself,”answered Cnseil. “That crash threw yu as well as me int the sea?” “N;but, being in my master’s service,I fllwed him.” Cnseil was cl and calm. Nevertheless,ur situatin was n less terrible. Near ne ’clck in the mrning,I suddenly felt terribly tired. Cnseil had t keep me up, and ur preservatin depended n him alne. “Leave me! Leave me!”I said t him.
“Never!” replied he. “I wuld drwn first.” “Help! Help!” cried Cnseil. It seemed t me as if a cry answered him. There was n mistake! A human vice respnded t urs! Then,I knw nt why,the thught f the strange, terrible animal came int my head fr the first time! But that vice! I had almst n strength left;my fingers culd hardly mve;my muth, pening and clsing, filled with salt water. I became clder and clder. I raised my head fr the last time, then I sank.At this mment a hard bdy struck me. I held nt it;then I felt that I was being drawn up,that Iwas brught t the surface f the water, that my chest cllapsed—my eyes clsed, uncnscius . I sn wke up,and half pened my eyes. I saw a face which I immediately recgnised. “Ned!” I cried. “The same, sir!”replied the Canadian. “Were yu thrwn int the sea when the bat crashed?” “Yes,Prfessr, but mre frtunate than yu,I was able t find safety almst immediately upn this island in the sea. Or,mre crrectly speaking,n this large whale. Only I sn fund ut why my weapn had nt entered its skin, but bunced ff.” “Why,Ned,why?”
“Because that creature is made f steel.” I mved myself quickly t the tp f the being, and kicked it. It was evidently a hard, slid bdy. The black back that supprted me was smth, plished, nthing like an animal. The blw prduced a sund f metal;and, incredible thugh it may be,it seemed as if it was made f metal plates. This mnster was a human cnstructin. We were lying upn the back f a srt f underwater bat. I searched all ver the utside fr an pening,a hle,but fund nthing. At last this lng night passed. Daybreak appeared. Suddenly a nise came frm inside the bat. One irn plate was mved,a man appeared, uttered an dd cry,and disappeared immediately. Sme mments after, eight strng men, their faces cvered, appeared niselessly, and drew us dwn int their incredible machine.
List the names f the main characters and indicate their relatinships.
the prfessr Cnseil, the prfessr’s assistant Ned(the Canadian),a sailr with the prfessr the men inside the submarine are unnamed and nt cnsidered as main characters

1 What physical prblems did the prfessr suffer after he fell int the sea? 2 What d yu think the “creature” is? Find evidence frm the extract. What scial class d yu think the prfessr and Cnseil belng t? Underline the expressins that indicate their scial status.
The creature is prbably a submarine because it is made f steel and it has peple inside. The prfessr fund ut that is was“smth, plished”,“prduced a sund f metal”and“made f metal plates”.
When he fell int the sea, the prfessr culdn’t breathe, and his muth filled with water. Later he became terribly tired and cld.
The prfessr and Cnseil prbably belng t different scial classes. Cnseil might be the servant f the prfessr because f the fllwing reasns:(1 )he never called the prfessr his title r his name, but called him master,(2 )he talked t the prfessr in a very plite and humble way,e. g.“If master wuld be s gd as t hld nt my shulder”, ( 3)he tried his best t serve the prfessr even with his life.
