?Unit 2 Wildlife Protection B
1. I suddenly heard an elephant crying as though frightened. Looking down, I immediately recognized that something was wrong, and ran down to the edge of the near bank. There I saw Ma Shwe with her three-month-old calf struggling in the fast-rising water, and it was a life-and-death struggle. Her calf was floating and screaming with fear. Ma Shwe was as near to the far bank as she could get, holding her whole body against the rushing water, and keeping the calf pressed against her huge body. Every now and then the rushing water would sweep the calf away. There was a sudden rise in the water and the calf was washed clean over the mother's body and was gone. Ma Shwe turned quickly to reach it and pressed the calf with her head and trunk(象鼻) against the rocky bank. Then with a huge effort, she picked it up in her trunk and tried until she was able to place it on a narrow shelf of rock.
Just at this moment, she went back into the river. If she were carried down, it would be certain death. I knew, as well as she did, that there was one spot(地點) where she could get to the bank, but it was on the other side from where she had put her calf. While I was wondering what I could do next, I heard the sound of a mother's love. Ma Shwe had crossed the river and got to the bank and was making her way back as fast as she could, roaring(吼叫) all the time, but to her calf it was music.
(1). The moment the author got down to the river bank he saw _______.
A. the calf was about to fall into the river
B. Ma Shwe was placing the calf on the rock
C. the calf was washed away by the rising water
D. Ma Shwe was holding the calf against the rushing water
(2). How did Ma Shwe manage to save her calf from the fast-flowing water?
A. By putting it on a safe spot. B. By pressing it against her body.
C. By taking it away with her. D. By carrying it on her back.
(3). How did the calf feel about the mother elephant's roaring?
A. It was a musical note. B. It was a sign of danger.
C. It was a call for help. D. It was a great comfort.
2. After years of heated debate, gray wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park. Fourteen wolves were caught in Canada and transported to the park. By last year, the Yellowstone wolf population had grown to more than 170 wolves.
Gray wolves once were seen here and there in the Yellowstone area and much of the continental United States, but they were gradually displaced by human development. By the 1920s, wolves had practically disappeared from the Yellowstone area. They went farther north into the deep forests of Canada, where there were fewer humans around.
The disappearance of the wolves had many unexpected results. Deer and elk populations—major food sources (來源) for the wolf—grew rapidly. These animals consumed large amounts of vegetation (植被), which reduced plant diversity in the park. In the absence of wolves, coyote populations also grew quickly. The coyotes killed a large percentage of the park's red foxes, and completely drove away the park's beavers.
As early as 1966, biologists asked the government to consider reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone Park. They hoped that wolves would be able to control the elk and coyote problems. Many farmers opposed the plan because they feared that wolves would kill their farm animals or pets.
The government spent nearly 30 years coming up with a plan to reintroduce the wolvers. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service carefully monitors and manages the wolf packs in Yellowstone. Today, the debate continues over how well the gray wolf is fitting in at Yellowstone. Elk, deer, and coyote populations are down, while beavers and red foxes have made a comeback. The Yellowstone wolf project has been a valuable experiment to help biologists decide whether to reintroduce wolves to other parts of the country as well.
1.What is the text mainly about?
A.Wildlife research in the United States.
B.Plant diversity in the Yellowstone area.

A.Damage to local ecology. B.A decline in the park's income.
C.Preservation of vegetation. D.An increase in the variety of animals.
4.What is the author's attitude towards the Yellowstone wolf project?
A.Doubtful. B.Positive. C.Disapproving. D.Uncaring.
3.????? One animal which is still alive, but has almost disappeared from the world, is the Chinese river dolphin or baiji.
????? The baiji is a beautiful animal with agraceful body and a long nose. It is blue-grey with a white underside, weighs between 100 and 160 kilogrammes, and can grow up to eight feet long. It lives in the middle and lower parts of the Yangtze River. Most dolphins live in the sea so the baiji is very unusual. It is one of only five kinds of river dolphins in the world.
????? In the past, the Yangtze River was home to many thousands of baiji. A book written during the Han Dynasty,22 centuries ago, tells of the river being full of the beautiful creatures. At that time, there were many stories about the baiji. One story said that the dolphin was really a beautiful princess who had drowned in the river. Another said it was a kind of horse that could gallop (急速行進) across water, carrying God on its back.
????? Sadly, the situation today is very different. Many millions of people live in the Yangtze River Basin and the river is busy, noisy and polluted. The baiji is almost blind and moves around using sounds. With so many boats and people using the river, the animals cannot find their way around. They are unable to find food, or find each other. Year by year, the number of baiji in the river becomes smaller and smaller.
????? A lot of work is being done to help the baiji. One section of the river has been made into a kind of nature park, where the baiji can be safe. Fishermen work together with scientists and tell them when they see a baiji, or if they find an injured one. Injured animals are taken to a research center and nursed back to be healthy. However, in spite of these measures, scientists estimate(估計) that the mumber of the baiji still alive in the river may be less than 100. If things continue as they are, the lovely creature will disappear in the next 25 years.
1.Which description about the baiji is WRONG?
A.It has already died out from the world.
B.It is blue-grey with a white underside.
C.It lives in the middle and lower parts of the Yangtze River.
D.It is one of only 5 kinds of river dolphins in the world.
2.The reasons why the baiji is disappearing are the following EXCEPT _____.
A.many millions of people live in the Yangtze River Basin, making there noisy and polluted
B.the baiji is blind because of the pollution and can't find the way around
C.the boats and people are noisy, making the animals cannot find their way around by sounds
D.they are unable to find food or find each other by sounds since the river is noisy
3.Which of the following is the correct way to save the baiji?
A.Catch the baiji and take them to the research center.
B.Make the whole Yangtze River a nature park for the baiji to live in.
C.Make one section of the river a nature park where the baiji can be safe.
D.Ask many people to come to the river to help the baiji
4.What can we learn from the passage?
A.People can take some measures to save the animals dying out.
B.The animals dying out are being hunted by human beings.
C.People like to live in the Yangtze River Basin with animals swimming in the river.
D.There are more baiji living in a nature park now.
4. How does an ecosystem(生態(tài)系統(tǒng)) work? What makes the populations of different species the way they are? Why are there so many flies and so few wolves? To find an answer, scientists have built mathematical models of food webs, noting who eats whom and how much each one eats.
With such models, scientists have found out some key principles operating in food webs. Most food webs, for instance, consist of many weak links rather than a few strong ones. When a predator(掠食動物) always eats huge numbers of a single prey(獵物), the two species are strongly linked; when a predator lives on various species, they are weakly linked. Food webs may be dominated by many weak links because that arrangement is more stable over the long term. If a predator can eat several species, it can survive the extinction of one of them. And if a predator can move on to another species that is easier to find when a prey species becomes rare, the switch allows the original prey to recover. The weak links may thus keep species from driving one another to extinction.
Mathematical models have also revealed that food webs may be unstable, where small changes of top predators can lead to big effects throughout entire ecosystems. In the 1960s, scientists proposed that predators at the top of a food web had a surprising amount of control over the size of populations of other species—including species they did not directly attack.
And unplanned human activities have proved the idea of top-down control by top predators to be true. In the ocean, we fished for top predators such as cod on an industrial scale, while on land, we killed off large predators such as wolves. These actions have greatly affected the ecological balance.
Scientists have built an early-warning system based on mathematical models. Ideally, the system would tell us when to adapt human activities that are pushing an ecosystem toward a breakdown or would even allow us to pull an ecosystem back from the borderline. Prevention is key, scientists say because once ecosystems pass their tipping point(臨界點), it is remarkably difficult for them to return.
1. What have scientists discovered with the help of mathematical models of food webs?
A. The living habits of species in food webs.
B. The rules governing food webs of the ecosystems.
C. The approaches to studying the species in the ecosystems.
D. The differences between weak and strong links in food webs.
2. A strong link is found between two species when a predator ________.
A. has a wide food choice
B. can easily find new prey
C. sticks to one prey species
D. can quickly move to another place
3. What will happen if the populations of top predators in a food web greatly decline?
A. The prey species they directly attack will die out.
B. The species they indirectly attack will turn into top predators.
C. The living environment of other species will remain unchanged.
D. The populations of other species will experience unexpected changes.
4. How does an early-warning system help us maintain the ecological balance?
A. By getting illegal practices under control.
B. By stopping us from killing large predators.
C. By bringing the broken-down ecosystems back to normal.
D. By signaling the urgent need for taking preventive action.

5. Sharks are among the oldest animals on Earth. There are hundreds of kinds of sharks. Most are about two metres long. The dogfish shark, however, is less than twenty centimetres in length. A shark has an extremely good sense of smell. It can find small amounts of substances in water, such as blood, body liquids and chemicals produced by animals. ①_______ Sharks eat fish, other sharks, and plants that live in the ocean.
Sharks grow slowly. About forty percent of all sharks lay eggs. ②_______ Some sharks carry their young inside their bodies as humans do. Some sharks are not able to reproduce until they are twenty years old. Most reproduce only every two years. And they give birth to fewer than ten young sharks. For this reason, overfishing of sharks is of special danger to the future of the animal.
Sharks are important for the world's oceans. They eat injured and diseased fish. Their hunting activities mean that the numbers of other fish in ocean waters do not become too great. ③_______
People hunt sharks for sport, food, medicine and their skin. Experts say the international market for some kinds of sharks has increased because many parts of a shark are valuable.
Collectors pay thousands of dollars for the jaws of a shark. ④_______ The skin of a shark can be used like leather.
In Asia, people enjoy a kind of soup made from shark fins. Experts say a fisherman can earn a lot of money for even one kilogram of shark fins. Sharks are among the oldest animals on Earth, but some sharks are in danger of disappearing from Earth. ⑤_______
A.Shark liver oil is a popular source of Vitamin A.
B.This protects the plants and other forms of life that exist in the oceans.
C.Sharks are valuable to us and we can make full use of them.
D.These powerful senses help sharks find their food.
E.If too many sharks in one area are killed, that group of sharks may never return to normal population levels.
F.They are a threat to other forms of life in the ocean.
G.The others give birth to the young.

??? I took a job as a receptionist for a veterinarian(獸醫(yī)) almost five decades ago. As an enthusiastic animal lover, I accepted the position on condition that I wouldn't have to assist with any wounded animals. I couldn't bear to see any creature in pain. At the end of my first week, we were closing the office for the day when a young man ran up to us holding a severely injured Doberman puppy in his arms and begging us to save his life. The four-month-old pup had been hit by a car.
??? The doctor and I ran back into the operating room. The only place the skin was still attached to this poor little animal's body was around one shoulder. The vet worked tirelessly for what seemed like hours, stitching(縫合) him back together again. That was the easy part. The puppy had broken multiple bones, including his spine (脊柱). Even if he survived the next few days, we were quite sure he would never walk again.
??? That day forever changed my life. The veterinarian guided me, and I became his assistant in all things. One of my first jobs was to give that Doberman puppy daily physical care. I remembered moving his tiny legs to try to keep his muscles from withering (萎縮). Weeks went by until one day, I felt this little fighter push back ever so slightly. And he continued to push back till he could finally use his legs. He recovered.
??? A year later, I walked into the clinic's waiting room and saw a huge Doberman who had been standing quietly with his owner on the opposite side of the room. I called the name of the next client.

There I saw Ma Shwe with her three-month-old calf struggling in the fast-rising water, and it was a life-and-death struggle... holding her whole body against the rushing water..."
I knew, as well as she did, that there was one spot(地點) where she could get to the bank, but it was on the other side from where she had put her calf." 故選A項。
2.答案:1.D; 2.C; 3.A; 4.B
根據(jù)第一段第一句"...?gray wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park. The government spent nearly 30 years coming up with a plan to reintroduce the wolves.
3.答案:1.A; 2.B; 3.C; 4.A
由第一段中的...still alive, but has almost disappeared 可知,應選 A。
With such models, scientists have found out some key principles operating in food webs."
根據(jù)第二段第句"When a predator(掠食動物) always eats huge numbers of a single prey(獵物), the two species are strongly linked..."
In the 1960s, scientists proposed that predators at the top of a food web had a surprising amount of control over the size of populations of other species—including species they did not directly attack."
Ideally, the system would tell us when to adapt human activities that are pushing an ecosystem toward a breakdown or would even allow us to pull an ecosystem bade from the borderline."
It can find small amounts of substances in water, such as blood, body liquids and chemicals produced by animals."
About forty percent of all sharks lay eggs."
Their hunting activities mean that the numbers of other fish in ocean waters do not become too great."
Collectors pay thousands of dollars for the jaws of a shark." The skin of a shark can be used like leather."
Sharks are among the oldest animals on Earth, but some sharks are in danger of disappearing from Earth."

save...from...
in one's care由......
由下文提到become deeply attached to humans可知, Emma從來沒把自己看成是白枕鶴, 故選A。
enable sb. to do sth.
on the decline在下降, 在衰退。
in contrast相比之下; by the way順便提一下; on the contrary恰恰相反。
7.答案:1. moved2. location3. originally4. was reported5. On6. which7. included8. is9. and10. decades

??? Suddenly, the huge Doberman broke loose and rushed toward me. I found myself pinned against the wall in amazement. To my surprise, the dog stood on his legs, his front paws on my shoulders, washing my face with joyful and abundant kisses! His owner came to me and told me that he was the dog we had saved one year ago. More than excited to see him again in such good health, I hugged him tightly, determined to become a good vet technician at that moment.

9.答案:
Dear Sir or Madam,
??? I'm writing to give some suggestions to protect the wildlife living in and around our city. As we know, many species of wildlife are in danger of extinction. This is because the environment that they are living in has been destroyed greatly.
??? With the development of cities, water and air are seriously polluted. Their living areas are becoming smaller and smaller. They not only have little to cat, but also can be killed by human beings. These species of wildlife are important part of our life. Personally, more measures should be taken to protect them from being hurt. Firstly, more laws must be made to stop people from cutting down trees. Secondly, all the factories must clean the waste water before it is poured into rivers or lakes. Thirdly, more reserves should be set up so that they can live safely.
??? I hope my suggestions are of much help.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
