(Text 10)
Visitors to Britain often say that English food isn’t very good. But they do not really know what they are talking about because they haven’t had the chance to eat real English food. Most of the restaurants in large towns in Britain are owned by foreigners and serve foreign food. When visitors are invited to eat in an English home, their hosts often feel they must offer them some special or foreign food.
However, some people do know English food. They think that it can be really good.On the other hand,it is true to say that sometimes it is terrible.Part of the problem is that in most big towns and cities in England the British are not really interested in food. They don’t spend much time cooking really good meals. They prefer food that is simple and easy to cook,or ready prepared food that only needs heating before eating. You can find the best English food in the countryside, away from large towns.Life is slower and people are not in such a hurry in the countryside. However, most visitors choose to visit London. They come because they are interested in shopping and sightseeing. They don’t come for food,so how can they know the real English food?

On a dark winter day in Russia in 1896,Sergei Prokofiev sat by a piano next to his mother. She was helping him compose (作曲) his first piece of music.Sergei was only five years old.
He had overheard his parents discussing a terrible famine (饑荒) in India. The picture Sergei had of those hungry people in his mind caused him to write a story,in the form of musical notes.Sergei could not read music,so he picked out a tune on the piano keys, and his mother recorded the notes.Sergei titled it “Indian Gallop”.
Sergei’s mother began giving him piano lessons for 20 minutes a day,and his ability grew quickly. She had a great love for music, too, and Sergei often lay awake in bed at night and listened to her play the piano.
Sergei’s parents found a famous music teacher for him.The teacher shouted at Sergei when he didn’t practice reading and playing music.Sergei later wrote,“I wanted to compose great musical plays, and instead I was given all sorts of boring tasks.” Yet he persisted_with his studies and grew up to be a great composer.
In 1936 a children’s theater asked Sergei to write music that would teach children about different instruments. He was happy and wrote the piece in a week, calling it Peter and the Wolf.
Sergei’s Peter and the Wolf was enjoyed by children as well as adults. The first time Sergei played the piece on the piano, the children listening to it loved it so much that they made him play the ending three extra times. He was excited.
Today Sergei Prokofiev is remembered not only for his contributions (貢獻) to classical music, but also for his sense of fun.

I love listening to music and there’s never been a better time to be a music fan. With so many ways to get music,we can listen to it any way we want, wherever we want.Although some fans still like to use CD players, the most popular way to listen to music nowadays is by either downloading (下載) or streaming (在線試聽).
As Internet connections got better, more MP3s were downloaded and shared. But the sound quality of these MP3s is not so good when compared to tapes or CDs.However, new generations (代) of music fans have grown used to this cheapened sound quality and don’t mind.
Streaming technology has made it even easier to listen to your favorite music. For a monthly price of about $10 (there are also free services with advertisements),users can listen to an endless amount of music from smartphones, computers and television sets.
Unfortunately, streaming is not without its downsides.Because all of the music is provided online,a strong Internet connection is necessary. And although it may seem like the Internet is available everywhere, there may be situations where you don’t get connected.Agreements with music companies and artists also need to be reached before streaming services are allowed to host their music.
Whether you choose to download or stream music, the artist does not make much money. The low payment from downloading and streaming music has also led to the continuing increase in concert ticket prices. And we can only expect these prices to increase greatly in the future.
Much as I would like to have all my music for free,I realize that it will kill the industry I’ve enjoyed for most of my life.I can’t say for certain which is better—downloading or streaming—but I do know how I can do my little part to help musicians continue making great music.Rather than focus on (關(guān)注) one or the other,I’m going to continue doing what I’ve been doing since I first discovered music:listen to it any way I can.

“I really like dancing,” says 11-year-old Jonathan Rosario of New York City.“That’s what I want to be when I grow up—a dancer.”
Every Saturday,Jonathan and hundreds of other children from New York City public schools take classes at National Dance Institute (NDI).The nonprofit (非營利的) organization in Upper Manhattan was founded in 1976 by dancing star Jacquesd’ Amboise, who grew up in a tough (充滿犯罪與暴力的) neighborhood. It has been teaching school children how to dance through weekly classes for over 30 years.NDI also supports programs in New York City public schools, helping thousands of children to express themselves creatively.
On a recent visit to NDI,I watched as Jonathan and other students practiced for an upcoming performance.I also spoke with d’Amboise about the influence that dance has had on his life and why he started a program for children.
“Dance changed me,” he said,“and I’d like to see other young people—especially boys—have the arts in their life, using dance as a window.”
For d’Amboise, dancing is like competitive sports.Ice hockey (冰球) players, for example,“l(fā)earn to compete as a single person and as a team,” he said.“They learn how to win or lose and accept either result. And they develop skills and unity (團結(jié)) by being on a team.” The same is true for dancers.
Jonathan says that Saturdays at NDI are all about energy and fun.But dancing also requires great effort.“Work hard,” he advises other young people,“and you’ll make it.”
