The early mrning sees the arrival f large trucks with tmates—fficial fight—starters get things ging by casting tmates at the crwd.

It all started in Peru. There, peple grew ptates ver 2,000 years ag. They weren’t like the nes we knw tday. ___4___ The first Eurpeans t try t plant ptates were the Spanish. In 1537, Spanish explrers discvered peple eating what they called papas. They brught this strange vegetable back t Spain in the 1550s.

The first mentin f “chips” in England is by the writer Charles Dickens in 1859. ___7___ The Americans call them “French fries” because sldiers frm America went t France during the First Wrld War and lved the dish. Nw, the Americans eat ver twenty millin tns f chips a year.
Crisps are an American inventin, althugh they call them “chips”. Everybdy agrees that a native American chef, Gerge Crum, made the first crisps in 1853. One day, a difficult custmer wanted fried ptates, sliced thinly. When they arrived, he said they weren’t thin enugh. ___8___ In the end, Crum gt annyed and sliced the ptates as thinly as he culd and fried them, and then added lts f salt. The dish was an immediate success.
