A new kind of surgical knife can tell cancerous from healthy tissue in seconds and may help improve tumor (腫瘤) removal in the operating room.
Known as the iKnife, the tool analyzes the vapour given off as surgeons use electrical current to cut away tissue, and it reports in real time whether the tissue is cancerous or not.
Tests in 91 human patients have shown the tool's diagnoses were extremely accurate, and may be reliable enough to begin widespread use in operating rooms.
The iKnife uses mass spectrometry (質譜法) to examine the surgical smoke given off by tissue, informing the surgeon in three seconds as to what it contains.
Other current techniques, which include sending removed tissue to a lab for analysis, are costly and frequently inadequate and take about 20-30 minutes.
“Remarkably, there are almost no technologies in routine clinical practice to assist the surgeon in improving the accuracy of cancer tissue clearance,” said the study.
For patients, this uncertainty can lead to repeat surgeries or worse, since returning to the operating table is not always an option for soft tissue tumors.
The iKnife can make current tumor diagnostics more accurate, and it has the potential to influence on-table decision-making and ultimately to improve oncological (腫瘤學的) outcomes.
In Britain alone, there are 300,000 new cases of cancer each year and 1.8 million surgical procedures performed in treatment.
The iKnife was tested on tissue samples from 302 patients, including those with tumors of the stomach, liver, lung, breast and brain, and later in the operating room during 91 procedures to cut tumor tissue away. The iKnife is not yet commercially available and likely will not be for at least another year.
“If perfected, this would help surgeons and patients avoid countless trips back to the operating room to try and obtain clear margins.A larger study needs to be carried out, but this preliminary data is very exciting,”said Stephanie Bernik, chief of surgical oncology at a hospital in New York.

Despite being a star performer at the young age of 11, she's never gone the Hollywood-spoiled-child route. In fact, she made all attempts to stay as normal as possible. She said, “Ignoring fame was my rebellion, in a funny way.I was insistent on being normal and doing normal things. It probably wasn't advisable to go to college in America and room with a complete stranger. And it probably wasn't wise to share a bathroom with eight other people in a dormitory.Looking back, I think that was crazy.”
She added, “I was very well-educated.My dad paid for me to go to a very good school, so I worked hard every single day at that school to make him proud of me.And I did, and I still do.”

A billionaire has recently made one of the biggest charitable (慈善的) donations to a university in China's history. Chen Tianqiao donated D|S115 million to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) to help advanced brain research. The donation will be spent deepening the understanding of how the brain works. Chen has been interested in brain research, believing it can shape the industries such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality. However, this huge donation has caused heated discussions among Chinese scholars and Internet users alike.
Many criticized him for choosing to give money to a foreign university rather than home institutes for brain research, which are developing fast and are on track to catch up with the US in just a few years. Rao Yi, a biologist at Peking University, even said the donation was a typical mistake.
Others however, support his choice. They believe Caltech is a more reasonable choice compared to Chinese research institutions. Caltech has a long history and has taken a leading position in biology, and therefore it produces more efficient (有效的) results. In addition, the results of the research benefit not only the American people, but also the rest of the world.
A similar controversial case started two years ago when Pan Shiyi, chairman of SOHO China, donated D|S15 million to Harvard University to help disadvantaged Chinese students.
Many believe that China is still behind in the management and use of donated money, and that as a result, Chinese charity donators are looking abroad. In comparison, Western countries like the US, which have a long history of donating money, have well-developed systems that use money efficiently. They can also provide full access for donors who want to track the use of the money. To get more donations, Chinese universities should be braver and more honest. They need self-reflection, rather than envy.

A.It was not used efficiently.
B.It was one of the largest to Caltech.
C.It should have been given away to a Chinese college.
D.It was used in brain research rather than for unfortunate people.
根據第二段中的“Many criticized him for choosing to give money to a foreign university rather than home institutes ...” give away“贈送”。
9.Some people are in favor of Chen's choice because ________.
A.the Chinese are just too envious
B.the achievements benefit the whole world
C.Caltech is a university with a longer history
D.the fund can help disadvantaged Chinese students
根據第三段中的“the results of the research benefit not only the American people, but also the rest of the world”可知B項正確。
10.Pan Shiyi is mentioned to ________.

A daily multivitamin may give your well-being an extra benefit, but if you've ever swallowed one and felt sick right after, you know it's hardly a pleasant experience. __1__
◆You're taking vitamins on an empty stomach.
Vitamins that are more acid in nature, like vitamin C, may cause nausea (惡心) if they're consumed on an empty stomach. Vitamins A, D, E and K, unlike some others, may be better absorbed when not taken with food.
◆__2__
Vitamins are like medicines in that they can act on each other and other medicines you're taking. __3__ Some research suggests that multivitamins could cause side effects when taken at the same time with high estrogen (雌激素) levels.
◆There's a lot of iron in your pill.
Multivitamins that contain a lot of iron or iron supplements themselves can cause nausea. This is especially true if you're taking them outside of a meal. Iron is interesting in that it's best absorbed on an empty stomach, but it's hardest to take on an empty stomach because of the nausea. __4__ It might decrease the absorption a little bit but it's better than nothing.
◆Allergic reaction side effects.
Since multivitamins contain so many vitamins and minerals, allergic reactions are certainly possible. Mild allergic reactions can include itchiness (癢) and a few hives (蕁麻疹). __5__ Should you experience more advanced signs of an allergic reaction, such as trouble breathing, chest pain, widespread hives or a swollen facial region, visit the closest emergency room immediately.
The label on your vitamins should provide directions for taking them. Check the information before taking them to see what else you should know.
A.You're taking vitamins with other medicines.
B.Below are a few reasons why multivitamins may be making you ill.
C.It's important to discuss with an expert the timing of these vitamins.
D.These stomach issues can be extremely disturbing.
E.It's better to take it with food than trying taking it on an empty stomach.
F.If you experience these side effects, stop use and contact your doctor.
G.Please review the combinations to make sure there are no harmful interactions.
