Wild African elephants address each ther with name-like calls, a rare ability amng nnhuman animals, accrding t a new study published in Nature Eclgy and Evlutin.
The researchers frm Save the Elephants, a research and cnservatin rganizatin based in Kenya, used machine learning t cnfirm that elephant calls cntained a name-like cmpnent identifying the intended recipient. When the researchers played back recrded calls, elephants respnded t calls that were addressed t them by calling back r appraching the speaker. Calls meant fr ther elephants received less f a reactin.
“Elephants are expressive animals,” said Gerge Wittemyer, an authr f the study, “and their reactins are easy t read t thse familiar with them. When the researchers played back samples, the elephants respnded energetically and psitively t recrdings f their friends and family members calling t them but did nt react enthusiastically r mve tward calls directed t thers, demnstrating that they recgnized their names.”
The study lasted fur years and included 14 mnths f fieldwrk in Kenya, with the researchers fllwing elephants in a vehicle and recrding their vcalizatins.
