Climbing, I nce thught, was a very manly activity, but as I fund my way int this activity, I came t see that smething quite different happens n the rck.
Like wild swimming, rck climbing invlves yu int the landscape. On the rck, I am fully fcused. Eyes pay clse attentin, ears are alert, and hands mve acrss the surface. Unlike walking, where I culd happily wander abut absent-mindedly, in climbing, attentive bservatin is essential.
As an arts student studying English literature, I discvered a new type f reading frm utdr climbing. Ging ut n t the crags (懸崖), I saw hw yu culd learn t read the rcks and develp a vcabulary f physical mvements. Gd climbers knew hw t adjust their bdies n t the stne. Watching them, I wanted t pssess that skillful “l(fā)anguage”.
My prgress happened when I wrked fr the Caingrms Natinal Park Authrity.Guiding my explratins int this strange new landscape was Nan Shepherd, a lady t. Unlike the gal-directed mindset f many muntaineers, she is nt cncerned with peaks r persnal achievement. Shepherd sees the muntain as a ttal envirnment and she celebrates the Caingrms as a place alive with plants, rcks, animals and elements. Thrugh her generus spirit and my wn curisity, I saw that rck climbing need nt be a prcess f testing neself against anything. Rather, the intensity f fcus culd develp a persn int anther way f being.
Spending s much time in high and st ny places has transfrmed my view n the wrld and ur place in it. I have cme int physical cntact with prcesses that g way beynd the everyday. Wrking with gravity, gelgy (地質(zhì)學(xué)), rhythms f weather and deep time, I gain an actual relatinship with the earth. This bnd lies at the heart f my passin fr rck climbing. I return t the rcks, because this is where I feel in cntact with ur land.

T Swedes, the scent f surstr?mming (鯡魚罐頭) is pleasant, but t mst thers, it’s sickening. This cntrast highlights the rle f culture in shaping ur perceptins (見解) f scent. Hwever, researchers nw suggest that bilgy might play a mre significant rle than previusly thught.
Artin Arshamian, a neurscientist at the Karlinska Institute in Sweden, and Asifa Majid, a psychlgist at the University f Oxfrd, nticed frm their wn previus wrk that peple frm different cultures described smells differently. They als knew frm past experiments by ther researchers that culture was imprtant in determining which srts f faces peple fund beautiful. Thus, they expected t see a similar phenmenn with smells.
The researchers cnducted a study invlving nine diverse grups f peple, including hunter-gatherers in Mexic, farmers in Ecuadr, and residents f cities like Mexic City and Bangkk. They were presented with ten smells, ranging frm isvaleric acid t vanilla extract, and asked t rate them accrding t pleasantness. The results shwed high cnsistency acrss cultures, with isvaleric acid universally disliked and vanilla extract mstly enjyed.
Interestingly, the chemical cmpsitin f the smells accunted fr 41% f the reactins, while cultural factrs nly explained 6%. It is quite different in the case f visual perceptin f faces, where a persn’s culture makes up 50% f the explanatin fr which faces they find beautiful. Meanwhile, the researchers identified an “eye f the behlder” effect in ur perceptins f scent. This phenmenn, thugh less bvius than in visual perceptin, represents the persnal preferences that are shaped by influences utside individual culture, accunting fr 54% f the differences in which smells peple liked.
This study suggests that ur sense f smell may be mre influenced by bilgical factrs than cultural nes. It challenges the idea that culture alne determines what we find pleasant r unpleasant and pens up new ways f explring the bilgical basis f ur senses.
28.What is the initial purpse f the research?
A.T explre hw culture affects ur sense f smell.
B.T prve all peple enjy the scent f surstr?mming.
C.T examine gegraphy plays a rle in scent perceptin.
D.T cnfirm bilgy has an influence n scent perceptin.
29.Hw did the researchers cnduct the research?
A.By making questinnaire surveys.B.By recrding participants’ reactins.
C.By cmparing cultural backgrunds.D.By referring t previus study reprts.
30.The underlined “eye f the behlder” effect mentined in the research refers t ________.
A.the standard f beauty acrss different cultures
B.the rle f culture in shaping ur sense f smell
C.the impact f persnal preferences n scent perceptin
D.the influence f utside factrs n ur visual preference
31.What can be inferred frm the participants’ reactins t isvaleric acid?
A.They were familiar with isvaleric acid befrehand.
B.They hated isvaleric acid all due t its unpleasant smell.
C.Their reactins t the scent f isvaleric acid varied amng cultures.
D.Their dislike fr isvaleric acid was based mre n bilgical factrs.

根據(jù)第二段“Artin Arshamian, a neurscientist at the Karlinska Institute in Sweden, and Asifa Majid, a psychlgist at the University f Oxfrd, nticed frm their wn previus wrk that peple frm different cultures described smells differently. 故選A。
根據(jù)第三段“The researchers cnducted a study invlving nine diverse grups f peple, including hunter-gatherers in Mexic, farmers in Ecuadr, and residents f cities like Mexic City and Bangkk. They were presented with ten smells, ranging frm isvaleric acid t vanilla extract, and asked t rate them accrding t pleasantness. 30.詞句猜測題。根據(jù)第四段“Meanwhile, the researchers identified an “eye f the behlder” effect in ur perceptins f scent. This phenmenn, thugh less bvius than in visual perceptin, represents the persnal preferences that are shaped by influences utside individual culture, accunting fr 54% f the differences in which smells peple liked. (與此同時,研究人員在我們對氣味的感知中發(fā)現(xiàn)了一種“旁觀者的眼睛”效應(yīng)。這種現(xiàn)象雖然沒有視覺感知那么明顯,但代表了受個人文化外部影響而形成的個人偏好,占人們喜歡的氣味差異的54%。)”可知,這里提到“旁觀者的眼睛”效應(yīng)指的是個人偏好對氣味的感知是有影響的。故選C。
31.推理判斷題。根據(jù)第三段“The results shwed high cnsistency acrss cultures, with isvaleric acid universally disliked and vanilla extract mstly enjyed. (結(jié)果顯示,不同培養(yǎng)物的一致性很高,異戊酸普遍不受歡迎,香草提取物大多受歡迎。)”和最后一段“This study suggests that ur sense f smell may be mre influenced by bilgical factrs than cultural nes. (這項(xiàng)研究表明,我們的嗅覺可能比文化因素更受生物因素的影響。)”可知,研究表明,我們的嗅覺可能比文化因素更受生物因素的影響。所以,人們對異戊酸的厭惡更多地是基于生物學(xué)因素。故選D。

Willful ignrance exists in large amunt in daily life. Peple regularly lk the ther way rather than examining the cnsequences f their actins. Despite plenty f scientific evidence fr climate change, fr instance, many peple still avid engaging with facts abut glbal warming.
We wanted t understand hw cmmn willful ignrance is and why peple engage in it. After cllecting data frm multiple research prjects that invlved mre than 6,000 individuals, we discvered that willful ignrance is cmmn and harmful, with 40 percent f peple chsing “nt t knw” the cnsequences f their actins t free themselves f guilt while maximizing their wn gains. But we als fund that abut 40 percent f peple are unselfish: rather than aviding infrmatin abut the cnsequences f their actins, they seek it ut t increase the benefits t thers.
In the experiments, the decisins were made in ne f tw settings. In the transparent (透明的) setting, decisin-makers had infrmatin abut hw their chice wuld affect themselves and their partner. In an ambiguus (模糊的) setting, decisin-makers knew hw their chice wuld matter fr themselves but nt fr their teammate — althugh they culd request that insight.
The verall balance tipped tward selfishness when participants had the ptin t avid infrmatin. Only 39 percent f peple in the ambiguus setting made the chice that ultimately benefited their partner — a significant drp frm 55 percent in the transparent cnditin.
If we can avid putting a strng mral emphasis n decisins, it may make peple feel less threatened and, as a result, be less willfully ignrant. Other research grups have fund prmising ways t d this. Fr instance, we culd encurage peple t think mre psitively abut gd deeds rather than guilt-trip them fr what they have failed t d. Highlighting recent glbal achievements, such as healing the zne (臭氧) layer, can inspire peple t keep up the gd wrk rather than feeling like the battle is lst and that the situatin is hpeless.
In shrt, we can encurage ne anther and urselves tward mre selfless and generus actins.
32.Why d sme peple chse nt t knw the cnsequences f their actins?
A.T make easier chices t be a gd persn.
B.T increase their wn benefits mre than thers’.
C.T avid the influence f cnsequences n actins.
D.T get the mst benefits withut a sense f shame.
33.Hw can willful ignrance be prevented?
A.By fcusing less n its mrality.B.By stressing its ptential threat.
C.By being mre psitive abut neself.D.By getting peple aware f their actins.
34.Which part f the magazine is the passage taken frm?
A.Culture.B.Envirnment.C.Psychlgy.D.Bilgy.
35.What is the passage mainly abut?
A.The reasn fr willful ignrance.
B.The results f willful ignrance.
C.The harmful effects f willful ignrance.
D.The influence f willful ignrance n envirnment.
【答案】32.D 33.A 34.C 35.A

根據(jù)第二段“we discvered that willful ignrance is cmmn and harmful, with 40 percent f peple chsing “nt t knw” the cnsequences f their actins t free themselves f guilt while maximizing their wn gains. (我們發(fā)現(xiàn),故意的無知是常見且有害的,40%的人選擇“不知道”他們行為的后果,以釋放自己的罪惡感,同時最大化自己的利益。)”可知,有些人選擇“不知道”他們行為的后果是為了逃避罪惡感,同時最大化自己的利益。因此,他們選擇不知道是為了獲得最大的利益而不感到羞恥。故選D。
33.細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第五段中“If we can avid putting a strng mral emphasis n decisins, it may make peple feel less threatened and, as a result, be less willfully ignrant. (如果我們能夠避免在決策中強(qiáng)調(diào)強(qiáng)烈的道德,它可能會使人們感到較少的威脅,從而減少故意無知。)”可知,減少道德上的強(qiáng)調(diào)或壓力可以幫助防止有意無知即通過減少對其道德的關(guān)注可以防止有意無知。故選A。
根據(jù)第一段中“Willful ignrance exists in large amunt in daily life. Peple regularly lk the ther way rather than examining the cnsequences f their actins. (在日常生活中大量存在著故意無知。人們經(jīng)常睜一只眼閉一只眼,而不去審視自己行為的后果。)”以及通讀全文可知,文章介紹的是故意無知的心理現(xiàn)象,即人們選擇不去了解某些信息以避免對自己行為后果的負(fù)罪感,并追求個人利益的最大化。因此,文章很可能來自心理學(xué)雜志。故選C。
35.主旨大意題。根據(jù)第一段中“Willful ignrance exists in large amunt in daily life. Peple regularly lk the ther way rather than examining the cnsequences f their actins. (在日常生活中大量存在著故意無知。人們經(jīng)常睜一只眼閉一只眼,而不去審視自己行為的后果。)”可知,文章介紹的是故意無知的心理現(xiàn)象;同時根據(jù)第二段“we discvered that willful ignrance is cmmn and harmful, with 40 percent f peple chsing “nt t knw” the cnsequences f their actins t free themselves f guilt while maximizing their wn gains. (我們發(fā)現(xiàn),故意的無知是常見且有害的,40%的人選擇“不知道”他們行為的后果,以釋放自己的罪惡感,同時最大化自己的利益。)”可知,有些人選擇“故意無知”的行為是為了逃避罪惡感,同時最大化自己的利益,即揭示了“故意無知”產(chǎn)生的原因;同時,根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段中“If we can avid putting a strng mral emphasis n decisins, it may make peple feel less threatened and, as a result, be less willfully ignrant. (如果我們能夠避免在決策中強(qiáng)調(diào)強(qiáng)烈的道德,它可能會使人們感到較少的威脅,從而減少故意無知。)”可知,此處指出如何通過改變道德框架來預(yù)防故意無知。因此,文章的主要內(nèi)容是介紹關(guān)于故意無知的心理現(xiàn)象,及其形成原因。A選項(xiàng)“The reasn fr willful ignrance.(故意無知的原因。)” 故選A。
