They were just t cstly. S he decided t build a mre affrdable ne. His device uses tiny spinning mtrs t create vibratins that feel like the raised dts f braille letters. He then tested it with students at New Delhi’ s Blind Relief Assciatin, achieving 86% accuracy in braille reading cmpared t print.
“I’ve never been capable f sftware,” Yash says. But building his device required cding skills, which he learned by watching YuTube vides and reading Reddit psts. “Picking up that new skill was cl,” he adds, “and seeing everything fit tgether the first time was just pure excitement.”
Despite his initial jy, the prcess wasn’t withut challenges. At first, he attempted t base his design n a TENS machine — a device that uses electric pulses t relieve pain, hping these pulses culd create the feeling f braille dts. When this apprach didn’t wrk, he realized that instead f starting ver, he nly needed t change the way f spreading infrmatin t the finger. This idea helped him pwer thrugh the develpment f his mtr-based device.
Yash’s research earned him the first-place Technlgy Award in the 2024 Therm Fisher Scientific Junir Innvatrs Challenge. “I’m planning t add OCR,” Yash says. Right nw, his machine translates cmputer texts int braille letters. But with OCR, it culd translate printed r handwritten texts int braille. Fr thse new t science fairs, Yash advises, “Try t find smething that yu think can be dne based n yur current abilities. Als, ask peple in yur cmmunity what prblems they need slving. I think that’s the mst imprtant part — getting first-hand feedback.”

D.By adjusting hw messages reached the finger.
7.What des Yash advise beginners t d?

An artificial intelligence (AI) trained n persnal data cvering the entire ppulatin f Denmark can predict peple’s chances f dying mre accurately than any existing mdel, even thse used in the insurance industry. The researchers behind the technlgy say it culd als have a psitive impact n early predictin f scial and health prblems.
Sune Lehmann Jrgensen at the Technical University f Denmark and his clleagues used the data cvering varius aspects f 6 millin peple frm 2008 t 2020 frm Denmark. They changed the data int wrds that culd be used t train a large language mdel, the same technlgy that pwers ther AI apps. These mdels wrk by lking at a series f wrds and determining which wrd is statistically mst likely t cme next, based n vast amunts f examples. In a similar way, the researchers’ Life2vec mdel can lk at a series f life events that frm a persn’s histry and determine what is mst likely t happen next.
In experiments, Life2vec was trained n all but the last fur years f the data, which was held back fr testing. The researchers tk data n a grup f peple aged frm 35 t 65, half f whm died between 2016 and 2020, and asked Life2vec t predict wh lived and wh died. It was 11 percent mre accurate than any existing AI mdel used t price life insurance plicies in the finance industry.
Jrgensen believes that the mdel has cnsumed enugh data that it is likely t be able t shed light n a wide range f health and scial tpics. This means it culd be used t predict health issues and catch them early, r by gvernments t reduce inequality. But he stresses that it culd als be used by cmpanies in a harmful way. “Clearly, ur mdel shuld nt be used by an insurance cmpany, because the whle idea f insurance is that, by sharing the lack f knwledge f smebdy wh is ging t be the unlucky persn struck by sme incidents r deaths, we can kind f share this burden,” says Jrgensen.
8.What makes Life2vec mre pwerful in frecasting death risks?
A.It is trained n vast amunts f data.
B.It ges thrugh a large number f tests.
C.It uses the same technlgy as ther AI apps d.
D.It is intended fr the gvernment t make plicies.
9.Which f the fllwing statements abut Life2vec is true?
A.All f the data was held back fr testing.
B.Data adjustments were made t train a language mdel.
C.Mre data is needed t shed light n health and scial tpics.
D.It is the first AI trained t predict peple’s likelihd f death.
10.Why shuld Life2vec be kept ut f the hands f businesses?
A.T guard public interests.B.T remve scial inequality.
C.T keep its technlgy a secret.D.T maintain the gvernment’s authrity.
11.Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
A.Life2vec: Superir T Other AI Apps
B.New AI Can Predict Risk Of Early Death
C.Advanced Technlgy Addresses Scial Prblems
D.Insurance Cmpanies: Keep Away Frm Life2vec

Returning t a bk yu’ve read many times can feel like drinks with an ld friend. There’s a welcme familiarity, but als smetimes a slight suspicin that time has changed yu bth, and thus the relatinship. But bks dn’t change, peple d. And that’s what makes the act f rereading s rich and transfrmative.
The beauty f rereading lies in the idea that ur bnd with the wrk is based n ur present mental register. It’s true, the lder I get, the mre I feel time has wings. But with reading, it’s all abut the present. It’s abut the nw and what ne cntributes t the nw, because reading is a give and take between authr and reader. Each has t pull their wn weight.
There are three bks I reread annually. The first, which I take t reading every spring, is Ernest Hemingway’s A Mveable Feast. Published in 1964, it’s his classic memir f 1920s Paris. The language is almst intxicating (令人陶醉的), an aging writer lking back n an ambitius yet simpler time. Anther is Annie Dillard’s Hly the Firm, her petic 1975 ramble (隨筆) abut everything and nthing. The third bk ís Juli Crtazar’s Save Twilight: Selected Pems, as if a bttle f wine remaining mre and mre mellw as time flws.
While I tend t buy a lt f bks, these three were given t me as gifts, which might add t the meaning I attach t them. But I imagine that, while mney is indeed wnderful and necessary, rereading an authr’s wrk is the highest currency a reader can pay them. The best bks are the nes that pen further as time passes. But remember, it’s yu that have t grw and read and reread in rder t better understand yur friends.
12.What des the authr imply in the first paragraph?
A.Drinking with ld friends is quite beneficial.
B.Either bks r us are changeable alng with time.
C.It is recmmended t read ne bk ver and ver again.
D.Rereading requires a large amunt f time and mney.
13.What d yu knw abut Hemingway’s A Mveable Feast?
A.It’s a brief accunt f a trip.
B.It’s abut Hemingway’s life as a yung man.
C.It’s a recrd f a histric event.
D.It’s abut Hemingway’s friends in Paris.
14.Hw d yu understand “rereading an authr’s wrk is the highest currency a reader can pay them” in the last paragraph?
A.Rereading can help readers pay their debts.
B.Rereading will bring satisfactin t authrs.
C.The mre ne reads, the richer he will be.
D.Readers shuld pay mney t reread bks.
15.What is the best title fr the passage?
A.Three Masterpieces I Reread Annually
B.Effective Appraches t Rereading Bks
C.Authr and Reader Pull Their Own Weight
D.Rereading Des Matter t Persnal Grwth
