2. My name is Jack. I started helping ut at the Carver Center in Nrwalk at the beginning f February, 2019. On my first day, I had n idea what t expect, but after a few hurs’ vlunteering, I came hme feeling like a cmpletely different persn. My mther even tld me that I had changed smehw. It’s true. I felt better, and almst renewed, like I was breathing fresh new air.
I was assigned t a class f first graders. My jb was t help them with their hmewrk. I can hnestly say that I’ve never met such eager and friendly kids. They welcmed me almst instantly, and I felt right at hme. I think there were at least fur different kids wh came right up t me within tw minutes f my arrival, asking me t help them with their hmewrk.
Yu culd tell that they were smart, ready t learn and excited. I lved reading with the kids and playing “Srry!” with them. They made me laugh, they made me smile, but mst imprtantly, they made me want t cme back. I felt like I already had a place there. That’s just my impressin f the Carver Center: warm and inviting.
Befre I started vlunteering, I had always heard peple say it was rewarding. But I never truly knew what they meant until I stepped int the Carver Center. I never knew I wuld feel s much emtinally, and that I wuld change s much mentally.
Fr me, vlunteering isn’t just abut the hme-wrk tutring. It became smething special t me, and smething that I culd call my wn, almst like a guilty pleasure, but withut the guilt. Vlunteering truly has becme a life-changing experience that’s nw part f wh I am and hw I chse t live my life.

3. “Mm, I dn’t like yu; yu’re nt pretty nw,” my five-year-ld sn said t me ne day. Being a mther f tw kids under three has certainly kept me busy. In priritizing (優(yōu)先處理) my family’s needs, my wn needs are always put n the back burner.
By the end f the day, when I finally have time t think abut ding smething fr myself, I’m t tired. I reach fr a glass f wine and sink dwn int the sfa t watch sme mindless TV entertainment. I escape. I let myself daydream.

But smething changed n the day my sn tld me I wasn’t pretty. That night, in the mirrr I nticed the light had gne ut f my eyes. My kids had magical eyes. They shne with wnder, hpe, and adventure. Cntrarily, my eyes were dull. I nce had light and a jurnal full f adventures.
Then, I decided t bring light back t my eyes. I listed new things t try befre I turned frty years ld. The first thing was participating in a Plar Plunge t raise mney fr the Special Olympics. I live in Minnesta and jumping int the middle f a frzen lake seems very appealing. On the mrning f the Plar Plunge, I changed int my 1980s wrkut gear (健身裝備). My sn said, “Mm, yu lk pretty.”
But I hesitated when appraching the platfrm t take the leap int the frzen lake. Finally, I let g f my fear and gt ready t embrace the challenge. I felt happy and prud f myself as I came up frm the lake. I kept screaming, “I did it!”
Everyne wh participated in the Plar Plunge received a blue T-shirt. Whenever I wear that shirt, my sns stated, “Mmmy, yu’re great. We want t d that, t”. It makes me prud.
Slwly, I am returning. I am shwing my family it’s imprtant t dream and achieve it. I reach ut t my friends and family. I am rebuilding myself.

4. Herman Cruse, a schl bus driver frm New Jersey, has been with Middle Twnship Public Schls fr the past nine years. He believes bus drivers are the eyes and ears f students when they're away frm hme and they have a gift t discern what kids are feeling.
During ne mrning ride, Cruse nticed a kindergartner seemed a little sad. When Cruse asked him what was wrng, the by explained that he wasn't able t cmplete his reading assignment because his parents were busy with his fur siblings (兄弟姐妹). An idea suddenly crssed Cruse's mind. “Listen, if yu dn't mind, I'd like t cme t the schl and read with yu. ”he said.
After receiving permissin frm the by's teacher, Alex Bakley, Cruse shwed up at her classrm the fllwing week. When he walked in, the by shuted prudly, “Hey, that's my bus driver!”They went int a quiet crner and began reading tgether. Later, a secnd student wanted t read with him, then a third. All the kids went t the teacher asking, “Can I read with Mr. Herman?”
Cruse nw vlunteers t help kindergarten students with reading tw days a week, and n a third day, he instructs the schl's first-and secnd-graders. After drpping the kids ff at schl, f curse. Every child lks up t Cruse, bth n and ff the schl bus. “Herman is super psitive and he's a bright light at ur schl wh makes every child feel lved and heard. ”said Bakley.
Fr Cruse, what started ut as a way t kill time has nw develped int a way t make a difference in the heart f a child. He used t g t the gym r library after delivering students t schls. It wasn't until he ffered t help the by n the bus that he realized there was smething mre rewarding he culd be ding. It's a jy fr him t see the kids get excited when they learn t sund ut wrds. He lves hw reading pens up a new wrld fr them.
