A stry abut the Duble Ninth Festival The Duble Ninth Festival, als named the “Chng Yang Festival”, is celebrated n the ninth day f the ninth mnth f the Chinese lunar calendar. The festival began as early as the Warring States Perid (475-221 BC). In ancient time, numbers were mysterius and were divided int yin and yang. Yin means smething f darkness and yang means life and brightness. The number nine is regarded as yang. The ninth day f the ninth mnth is a duble yang day, s it is called “Chng Yang Festival”. (Chng means “repeat” in Chinese)
Peple always climb muntains and drink chrysanthemum wine n the Duble Ninth Festival. It is hard t say when the custms were created. But there are many stries which are clsely related. As recrded in a histrical bk f the sixth century, in ancient times, there lived a man named Huang Jing. He was learning the magic arts frm Fei Changfang. One day, they were climbing a muntain. Fei Changfang suddenly stpped and lked very upset. He said t Huang Jing, “On the ninth day f the ninth lunar mnth, a big truble will cme t yur hmetwn”. Yu must g hme immediately. Remember t make a red bag fr each ne f yur family members and leave hme quickly and climb t the tp f a muntain. Mst imprtantly, yu must all drink sme chrysanthemum wine. Only by ding s can yur family members avid the big truble.
On hearing this, Huang Jing rushed hme and asked his family t d exactly as his teacher said. The whle family climbed a nearby muntain and did nt return until the evening. When they gt back hme, they fund all their animals dead, including chickens, sheep, dgs and s n. Since then, climbing a muntain and drinking chrysanthemum wine became the traditinal activities f the Duble Ninth Festival, t avid evil spirits and bad luck. Nwadays, the Duble Ninth Festival is als a time fr family get-tgethers t d sme exercise as well as enjy the autumn scenery.
