We ften find it hard t tear ur eyes away frm screens—an urge s intense that it messes with ur fcus and ur cgnitive (認(rèn)知的) health, which is knwn as “brain rt”. The Oxfrd Dictinary defines it as the degradatin f mental state due t vercnsumptin f nline cntent. It refers t the dull stuff n scial media and its negative impact n brain health.
“There’s an arms race t develp digital cntent and platfrms that can grab peple’s attentin and cmpete in a digital market,” says Adam Leventhal, a prfessr at the University f Suthern Califrnia. “Digital cntent and platfrms that win the arms race are increasingly addictive.” Dr. Leventhal adds, “They pull peple int ‘digital addictin’ and expse cnsumers t unhealthy cntent.”
Thugh nt an fficial diagnsis(診斷), “brain rt” can cause cgnitive and emtinal prblems. “T much screen time can negatively affect attentin, cncentratin, learning, memry, emtinal regulatin, and scial functining,” Dr. Manwell says. “Brain rt” ccurs as screen time replaces activities beneficial t the brain, such as exercise and scializing. Passive, rapid scrlling while multitasking r trying t wrk r study at the same time als cntributes, resulting in divided and reduced attentinal resurces and leading t prer learning and memry capabilities. Manwell says, “There are ften als crrespnding effects n the brain such as reduced gray matter and white matter, leading t damaged prcessing capacity and efficiency.”
T fight against “brain rt”, changes can be made. Manwell suggests altering digital media habits, like taking screen breaks and limiting certain apps. There are apps t track screen time and enfrce digital detx. Fr lng-term imprvement, Manwell recmmends replacing screen time with activities like meditatin, exercise, and learning new skills. If screen use is wrk-related, find alternatives like printing materials r having in-persn meetings. When n a screen, fcus merely n the task t decline multitasking’s negative effects. Overall, being aware and making lifestyle adjustments can help prevent and reverse(逆轉(zhuǎn))the impact f “brain rt”.

Teaching mathematics pses a challenge in creating hmewrk, as histrical questins like “was Henry VIII a gd king?” are reasnable t ask either a classrm f nine-year-lds r a lecture theatre f pstgraduates, whereas math prblems like “slve this quadratic equatin(二次方程)” wuld leave the classrm cnfused and the lecture theatre unimpressed. Thinking up a prblem that is easy enugh t be accessible, yet hard enugh t be satisfying, is a tricky prblem itself.
Partly fr this reasn, bks that explain hw mathematicians think t thse utside the math cmmunity are rare and precius. Nw Sir David Spiegelhalter, emeritus (榮譽(yù)退休的) prfessr f statistics at the University f Cambridge, will draw a wider readership with his new bk “The Art f Uncertainty”, fr its tpic is universal: hw t analyse prbability, ignrance and risk.
The previus pandemic has reminded us that such analysis is critical. The bk explains that it desn’t mean the vaccinatin(疫苗接種) prgram is harmful if a new virus spreads and in turn, mst deaths ccur amng thse wh have received a new vaccine. The bk als delves int sme lighter tpics, including the extent t which tp ftball teams’ perfrmance cmes dwn t luck rather than skill.
Prfessr Spiegelhalter’s explratin f such subjects is delightful fr three reasns. First, he uses them t illustrate brader ideas abut hw prbability and statistics wrk. S a discussinf vaccine safety prceeds t Bayes’s principle, which is essential fr varius fields. Secndly, the authr raises fascinating philsphical questins abut the meaning f prbability. He argues that uncertainty is a subjective relatinship between bserver and bserved rather than a fundamental quantity, which serves as a crrective fr thse wh view maths as a black-and-white subject. The mst imprtant reasn, thugh, is Prfessr Spiegelhalter’s skill at cmmunicating these cmplex ideas f prbability and statistics, which makes it accessible t readers. Fr that reasn alne, it is a success—and, n dubt, a guiding light fr the authr’s successrs.
32.Why are the tw types f questins mentined in the first paragraph?
A. T highlight the difficulty in creating math hmewrk.
B. T demnstrate that histry is mre universally appealing.
C. T lay emphasis n the cmplexity f quadratic equatins.
D. T cmpare teaching effective methds in histry and math.
33.What d we knw abut Sir David Spiegelhalter’s bk?
A. It is intended fr math prfessinals.
B. It clarifies tp teams prbably win by luck.
C. It claims a new virus harms the vaccinatin prgram.
D. It gains mre readers fr the explratin f universal tpics.
34.What is mst crucial fr the bk’s psitive feedback?
A. Explaining Bayes’s principle. B. Cnveying cmplex ideas effectively.
C. Crrecting sme philsphical miscnceptins. D. Analyzing the relatinship between prbability and statistics.
35. What is the authr’s attitude twards the bk?
A. Critical. B. Mixed. C. Appreciative. D. Dubtful.

The Ppsicle Kids
A nearly empty bx f Ppsicles (棒冰) in the freezer, left frm a grandchild’s visit, caught my attentin. Initially, I wanted t thrw it away, but my wife suggested we give the remaining Ppsicles t the neighbrhd children. Her suggestin changed ur life and led us t a future full f “Ppsicle Kids.”
My wife and I, retired n Scial Security, live in an apartment cmplex. After careers in sales and nursing, ur daily cncerns revlved arund aches, pains, and dinner. We ften wndered what gd we were t the wrld.
That changed dramatically after we gave away the first Ppsicle.
Minutes after watching a neighbr by, a secnd grader, walk away with an icy treat, ur drbell rang. An adrable blnd girl, abut six, smiled sweetly, “Is it true yu’re giving away Ppsicles?”
With the bx empty, we returned t ur cncerns.
Early the next mrning, the drbell rang repeatedly. Standing n ur prch were the fur children frm the previus day. They vcalized their wants, chanting (有節(jié)奏地喊), “We want Ppsicles! We want Ppsicles!”
Lking int their eager yung faces, I wndered, “What have I started?” Sensing a victry, they ndded eagerly when I explained the rules: ring the bell nce, ne Ppsicle per day, and share smething gd abut their day. But their thin shulders bent dwnwards in disappintment when I mentined they had t give smething in return. I came t the rescue, suggesting they share smething psitive abut their day, like what they learned at schl r helping anther student. Over time, new rules were added: “Ladies first,” “Dn’t interrupt,” and “Prperly get rid f the sticks.”
On hlidays, they expressed their understanding f why the day was celebrated. Over the years, abut fifty yungsters visited. Sme became part f my life, like the fur kids wh jined me n the steps ne spring t read “Where the Red Fern Grws.” We discussed catching crawfish, lving pets, and family relatinships. This simple act f sharing Ppsicles transfrmed ur life, bringing jy and meaning t bth the children and urselves.

故選A。
根據(jù)第二 段第 一句話“Quit Smking helps users track their smke-free time and savings while ffering persnalized advice fr managing cravings. ” 和 最 后 一 句 話 “The app als prvides specific strategies fr managing cravings in different situatins, such as parties, suggesting tips like trying new drinks r mving away frm smkers.

24. A 。 Recgnizing her talent, the teacher handed her an enrllment brchure fr the Zhejiang Vcatinal Academy f Art, setting her n the path t becming a Yueju Opera perfrmer. 故選A。

The Oxfrd Dictinary defines it as the degradatin f mental state due t vercnsumptin f nline cntent, A選項(xiàng)說(shuō)它是醫(yī)生正式確診的一種嚴(yán)重疾病,文中明確指出它并非是官方診斷的病癥(Thugh nt an fficial diagnsis),所以 A 錯(cuò)誤。
從Adam Leventhal 所說(shuō)的話“There’s an arms race t develp digital cntent and platfrms that can grab peple’s attentin and cmpete in a digital market” 以 及 “Digital cntent and platfrms that win the arms race are increasingly addictive. They pull peple int ‘digital addictin ’ and expse cnsumers t unhealthy cntent.”
31. A 。 故選A。

33 D 。 Nw Sir David Spiegelhalter, emeritus prfessr f statistics at the University f Cambridge, will draw a wider readership with his new bk “The Art f Uncertainty”, fr its tpic is universal.
又根 據(jù) 最 后 一 句 話 “Fr that reasn alne, it is a success—and, n dubt, a guiding light fr the authr’s successrs.

And, just maybe, we’ve helped establish sme psitive attitudes they can use thrughut their lives. Our lives are nw full nce mre. What we receive frm these kids is wrth far mre than the cst f a few treats.

W: Gd evening, everyne. I recently learnt Arabic in Cair as part f my degree. My interest in the language was due t the passin f ur Arabic lecturer and as the curse prgressed, my interest in the culture als grew with it. I cnsidered studying in the Middle East, but ultimately decided n Cair due t its energetic cultural scene. Hwever, in the city, we faced sme challenges, including difficulties finding a htel and accmmdatin as we were a grup f unmarried individuals. Once settled, the culture shck was intense fr sme f us. One member f ur grup returned hme within the first week. Luckily I became accustmed t the life in Cair gradually. The biggest challenge f learning Arabic is the discnnectin between the written and the spken frms. Despite these challenges, learning Arabic has been a rewarding experience, including absrbing myself in the culture and getting t knw the lcals and even negtiating at a lcal market. Highlights were being invited t a traditinal Arabic meal at ne f the lcals ’ hme and being able t cnfidently cmmunicate. Overall, this experience was utside f my cmfrt zne and allwed me t learn and grw in interesting ways. I encurage thers t cnsider invlving themselves in new cultures and languages. Thanks fr listening.
