Nan-physicist Bdil Hlst’s interest in plar bear fur began while she was watching a German quiz shw.
She nted that plar bears jump int frigid water when they hunt, cming back nt land t eat their prey. Mst mammalian hair can freeze when it gets wet in cld temperatures — think human beards n a frsty winter day. But, Hlst nticed, plar bear fur did nt freeze after getting wet. The wrk culd eventually lead t mre envirnmentally friendly alternatives t existing anti-ice chemicals.
Hair grease (油脂) is the secret, it turns ut. Plar bear fur cntains a ccktail f greasy cmpunds that make it exceptinally resistant t freezing, Hlst and her clleagues reprted last week in Science Advances.
Hlst initially thught that plar bear fur might have structural prperties that prevent ice frm frming. She and her clleagues used high-pwered micrscpes t zm in n the fur, but “we culdn’t really see anything special, they just lked nrmal,” Hlst says. “We started t suspect, there’s mre t this than structure.”
While the team was handling the fur, they nticed it was very greasy. When the team washed the hair, it largely lst its anti-icing prperties. “We realized that this was dwn t plar bear hair grease, effectively,” Hlst says. The team then did a suite f mlecular (分子) analyses t identify what specifically abut hair grease might prevent ice frm frming. They fund high levels f certain cmpunds that are especially resistant t freezing, specifically because ice has a harder time sticking t them.
Plar bear fur als lacked a cmpund called squalene (角鯊烯), the researchers fund. Squalene is abundant in ther marine mammals and has prperties that make ice stick t it easily.
This cmbinatin makes plar bear fur highly resistant t freezing, Hlst says.
T be extra sure that these anti-ice prperties are unique t plar bear fur grease, as ppsed t any hair grease, ne f Hlst’s Ph. D. students tk matters int his wn hands.
“He didn’t wash his hair fr quite sme time and then shaved and made a little mat f his wn greasy hair,” says Hlst. “He tested the anti-icing prperties and culd see very clearly that human hair, whether yu wash it r nt, isn’t very gd at anti-icing.”
Hlst hpes that the research might inspire new appraches t cnccting (調(diào)制) anti-icing materials that culd be used fr ski waxes, lubricants and even plane de-icing fluids. But she stresses that her team isn’t the first t identify that plar bear fur has such special anti-icing prperties. “We didn’t discver it,” she says. “It’s been knwn t Arctic peple fr centuries.”
8. What cntributes t plar bears’ resistance t freezing?
A. Abundant squalene.B. Anti-icing structural prperties.
C. A ccktail f remved greasy cmpunds.D. Cmbinatin f squalene shrtage and greasy fur.
9. What can we infer abut ther marine mammals?
A. Ice has an easier time sticking t them due t abundant squalene.
B. Their high levels f certain cmpunds are resistant t freezing.
C. Unique structural prperties prevent ice frm frming n them.
D. The research n them may inspire mre envirnmentally friendly alternatives.
10. Why did the authr mentin the human hair experiment?
A. T shw the anti-icing prperties f human hair.
B. T stress the unique structural prperties f plar bears.
C. T reveal the distinct feature f anti-ice plar bear fur grease.
D. T give an example f anti-ice prperties f plar bear fur grease.
11. What can we learn frm the last paragraph?
A. Actin speaks luder than wrds.B. Where there is a will, there is a way.
C. Genuine knwledge cmes frm practice.D. When everyne adds fuel, the flames rise high.

Currently, it is getting harder and harder t find clthes that aren’t laced with plastic. Like sugar in fd, plastic cmes in many frms with many different names. When yu check a garment’s fabric cmpsitin, it’s nt uncmmn t be cnfrnted by a list f scientific wrds. Fr example: plyethylene terephthalate, plyamide, plyurethane, plyvinyl chlride r plyprpylene, which are all types f plastic. Hwever, t few realize that unless yu’ re paying clse attentin, mst f yur wardrbe cntains a whle lt f plastic. Often it is invisible like the micrplastics shed by synthetic materials; while yu may never see them, they have been fund at the bttm f the cean and in human bld.
Despite ur awareness f the risks f plastic fashin’s dependence n it persists. A recent reprt says between 1980 and 2014, prductin f plyester increased by nearly 900%. Tw cmmn plastics, plyester and nyln, accunt fr 69% f all the materials used in clthing glbally and that number is expected t increase t 75% by 2030.
S why d we cntinue t use plastics? The main reasn is, f curse, cst. The market price fr synthetic fibers is significantly less cmpared t natural fibers, creating a huge incentive fr fashin brands t find ways t replace traditinally used natural fibers with synthetic nes. Mrever, making synthetic materials isn’t dependent n seasns r farms affected by rainfall r heatwaves, as is the case with cttn and wl.
Yu’ve likely seen a lt f brands prmting themselves as sustainable by using plastic bttles t make their clthes. But the prblem is, ur plastic-based textile (紡織品) ecnmy has led t unsustainable verprductin f clthing that is unhealthy fr ur cmmunities and ur ecsystems. And plastic clthing is still ging t impact ur health and have a lasting effect n the envirnment. Textiles made frm plastic fibers are respnsible fr micrplastic fiber shedding at every stage f their lives: when they’ re wrn, washed, and dispsed f. These micrplastics enter the air we breathe, the water we drink and the fd we eat. Plus, clthing made frm plastic bttles can actually interrupt and shrten its life cycle.
While the hidden stry f plastic in ur clthes desn’t have the happiest endings yet, we can each take measures. Reduce ur verall cnsumptin f clthing and textile prducts and extend the life f ur favrite garment. Learning t mend can be a game-changer. When we d make textile purchases, buy and wear natural fiber prducts, especially thse riginating frm land-based prductin systems that are wrking t restre and build ecsystem and sil health.
12. What can we learn frm the first paragraph?
A. We can’t find plastic in ur bld.B. Plastic is widely used in ur clthes.
C. Few peple have plastic in their wardrbes.D. Many scientific wrds are clsely linked with plastic.
13. What des the underlined wrd “incentive” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Prblem.B. Crwd.C. Market.D. Mtivatin.
14. What is the authr’s attitude twards plastic clthing?
A. Supprtive.B. Negative.C. Tlerant.D. Ambiguus.
15. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the passage?
A. Yu Are Living in PlasticB. Measures t Fight Plastic Clthing
C. Yur Clthes Are Made frm PlasticD. Develpment f Plastic-based Ecnmy
