Wednesday mrning came. Anne gt up at sunrise because she was t excited t sleep. She planned t make a cake fr Mrs Allan, the best teacher she had ever met, wh was invited ver fr a tea party. When she finally shut the ven dr, she tk a lng breath. “I’m sure I haven’t frgtten anything this time, Marilla. But d yu think it will rise? What if that cake desn’t rise?” “We’ll have plenty withut it,” was Marilla’s uninterested way f lking at, the subject.
The cake did rise, hwever, and came ut f the ven lking perfect. Anne was red-faced with delight and, in imaginatin, saw Mrs Allan eating it and pssibly asking fr anther piece! Mrs Allan arrived and they all enjyed a lvely tea. Everything went well until Anne’s cake was passed. Mrs Allan, having already been helped t a lt f desserts, declined it. But Marilla, seeing the disappintment n Anne’s face, said smilingly:“Oh, yu must take a piece, Mrs Allan. Anne made it specially fr yu, expecting that yu wuld lve it.”
“In that case I must try it,” laughed Mrs Allan. She tk a muthful and a strange expressin crssed her face; nt a wrd did she say, hwever, but cntinued eating.
