I nly ever did gymnastics recreatinally — I didn’t even knw real gyms existed — but I always lved it.
That lng drmant lve came raring back in my frties. It happened in an instant, at parents’ day fr my daughter’s beginning gymnastics class. The bars were just sitting there, and I had this verwhelming urge t grab hld and swing. But I culdn’t make it thrugh the warm-up at the first adult class I went. I felt bad during cnditining. Frm the rar f a crwd t the quiet f a library, sund and silence might seem like plar ppsites. Hwever, accrding t a new research, ur brains perceive them in the same way. Silence may nt be a sund, but scientists say we can truly hear it.
In this new study, researchers examined hw peple experience silence using well-knwn auditry illusins (錯(cuò)覺). The illusins are meant t test the perceptin f nise, but fr the study, the team adapted them t measure peple’s respnse t silence, instead.
“If yu can get the same illusins with silences as yu get with sunds, then that may be bvius that we literally hear silence after all.” Chaz Firestne, a c-authr f the study and cgnitive scientist at Jhns Hpkins University, says in a statement.
In the study, participants were tricked by these “silence illusins” in a similar way t hw peple are typically fled by the sund versins f the experiments.
The researchers prepared seven experiments and tested them n 1,000 study participants. In ne experiment, researchers played a recrding that sunded like backgrund nise in a crwded place. In the first half f the recrding, the backgrund nise was interrupted by tw separate perids f silence. In the secnd half, ne cntinuus perid f silence was inserted (嵌入). Researchers asked participants which silence felt lnger- the cmbinatin f the first tw perids f silence, r the secnd uninterrupted ne. Mst participants thught the cntinuus silence was lnger, but it was actually the same length as the tw shrter silences cmbined.
These results were cnsistent with previus research that examined auditry illusins, which used tw separate sunds and ne cntinuus sund. With that illusin, peple als perceived the cntinuus sund as lnger than the tw separate nes tgether.
Similar findings acrss the seven experiments suggested that humans experience silence and sund in much the same way: They can distrt (扭曲) ur perceptin f time.

Cmputer games have seriusly caught the attentin f Mass Media. The increasing amunt f games with vilent scenes scks the sciety and makes it very aware f them. The fact that vilent games cause vilence in peple is nt even dubted by mst peple. Sme say that the reasn lies in games being t clse t reality. But is it justified nly accrding t the external similarity f these tw wrlds?
Games riginally are entertainment. Cntemprary games are very realistic and fr this reasn they are a surce f great experience fr the player and develp the imaginatin. Games are mre than entertainment. The research f the New Yrk University led by Green and Bavelier claims that the player preferring active games get an imprvement f sme types f brain activity, related t prcessing f visual infrmatin. In particular, game players cpe with prblems f simultaneusly (同時(shí)地) tracking several mving bjects at the average level f 30% better than peple wh d nt play active cmputer vide games. A game is an abstractin. A player gets abstract tasks and acts accrding t abstract rules. Games are als the pssibility t be whever a persn wants t be and t rest frm the utside wrld fr sme time.
But what if a persn gets s much excited with the game scenes that he becmes vilent in reality? Then, it prves that the games cause peple t becme vilent. A psychlgically healthy persn will never cnfuse r cnnect these tw different wrlds. A game is a virtual wrld with visual images very similar t human. These images represent by themselves nthing but simple playing bstacles. A game may ptentially give the pprtunity t “destry the bstacles” that may nt be destryed accrding t the rules, but it is mre abut persnal chice whether t d it r nt. This leads us t the cnclusin that vilence is nt a cnsequence but the cause. Peple wh riginally tend t vilence may get annyed by games and perfrm vilence in the “real wrld”. In this case vilence in games is a simple justificatin f the vilent nature f the player.

和下文“and makes it very aware f them.(并讓它非常清楚地意識到它們。)”
根據(jù)文章第二段“The research f the New Yrk University led by Green and Bavelier claim that the player preferring active games get an imprvement f sme types f brain activity, related t prcessing f visual infrmatin.(由Green和Bavelier領(lǐng)導(dǎo)的紐約大學(xué)的研究聲稱,喜歡活躍游戲的玩家可以提高某些類型的大腦活動(dòng),與視覺信息的處理有關(guān)。)” 故選A項(xiàng)。
根據(jù)后一段“This leads us t the cnclusin that vilence is nt a cnsequence but the cause. Peple wh are riginally prne t vilence may get irritated by games and perfrm vilence in the “real wrld”. In this case vilence in games is a simple justificatin f the vilent nature f the player(這使我們得出結(jié)論,暴力不是結(jié)果,而是原因。
根據(jù)文章最后一段“Peple wh are riginally prne t vilence may get irritated by games and perfrm vilence in the “real wrld”. In this case vilence in games is a simple justificatin f the vilent nature f the player.(原本有暴力傾向的人可能會被游戲激怒,在“現(xiàn)實(shí)世界”中實(shí)施暴力。 故選A項(xiàng)。
【答案】16.A 17.D 18.G 19.C 20.E

It appears as a deep sense f envy, and cnstant expsure t it can have a weakening effect n ur self-esteem(自尊).(FOMO指的是別人的生活比我們自己的生活更優(yōu)越的看法。 所以選擇項(xiàng)A“If s, yu are nt alne.(如果是這樣,你并不孤單。)” 故選A。
17.根據(jù)前句“While feelings f envy and lack f cnfidence seem t be human nature, scial media seems t have added fuel t the fire. 和后文“Scial media, with its built-in appeal, allws us t share nly the best presentatins f ur life, while leaving ut the mre bring aspects. Althugh this culd be characterized as dishnest, it is the atmsphere scial media seems t demand. 所以選擇項(xiàng)D“Why des it have such a stimulating effect?
和后文“Well, s have thers. And what they’ve left hidden is the fact that bredm, lneliness and unpleasant chres are an unavidable part f everyne’s life, and yu’re nt the nly ne feeling left ut. 所以選擇項(xiàng)G“Have yu ever chsen phts that lead thers t the rsiest cnclusins abut yur life?
19.空處為本段主題句,根據(jù)后文“Yu may nt be a regular at fancy parties r a climber f dizzying peaks, but yu have yur health, a place t live and real friends wh appreciate yur presence in their lives. 所以選擇項(xiàng)C“Learn t appreciate the psitives.
20.根據(jù)前句“We are all flded daily with phts f ther peple’s perfectins, but really, what des it matter? 所以選擇項(xiàng)E“They are prbably n mre real than the funniest reality TV shw.
