“Because f the rbt’s small size and ability t change shape, we expect usage f this technlgy in fur imprtant areas,” the lead authr Kaushik Jayaram said. These include disaster respnse, check n high-value bjects, envirnmental mnitring and medical treatment.
“In the lng term, we hpe such rbts will be used mre widely in mving thrugh human bdies and perfrming surgeries that can’t be easily dne at present,” Jayaram said. With mCLARI, Jayaram’s team is mving clser t creating rbts that can fit in different envirnments—just like the insects they’re inspired by.
The mCLARI rbt has fur legs and can mve in narrw spaces by changing between running frward and side-t-side and can use different speeds in human bdies. Its legs are jined t its bdy thrugh jints, which enables mCLARI t change its bdy shape based n the envirnment it is in. Fr example, its legs can be lengthened up t 50% in certain spaces.
As fllw-up wrk, the scientists want t give mCLARI mre pwer and sensing ability while helping the surgeries. “We are als excited abut understanding the effect f shape change n imprving functins f rbts,” Jayaram said. “And this is sure a great ne-step frward f the technlgy. Summer sea ice in the Arctic culd melt almst cmpletely by the 2030s — rughly a decade earlier than prjected — even if humans cut back drastically n greenhuse gas emissins, new research suggests.
An ice-free summer, als called a “blue cean event”, will happen when the sea ice drps belw ne millin square kilmeters, writes Jnathan Bamber, a prfessr f physical gegraphy at the University f Bristl, in the Cnversatin.
Previus assessments using mdels have estimated an ice-free summer under high and intermediate emissins scenaris(高中等的排放情形) by 2050. But researchers nticed differences between what climate mdels predicted abut what wuld happen t sea ice and what they’ve actually seen thrugh bservatins. “The mdels, n average, underestimate sea ice decline cmpared with bservatins,” says Nathan Gillett, an Envirnment and Climate Change Canada scientist.
Nw, in a new study published in Nature Cmmunicatins, Gillett and his teammates changed these mdels t mre clsely fit satellite data cllected ver the past 40 years. Using these adapted mdels, the researchers prjected ice changes under different pssible levels f greenhuse gas emissins. Their paper suggests that regardless f the emissins scenari, “we may experience an unprecedented ice-free Arctic climate in the next decade r tw.”
While sea ice naturally decreases in the summer and refreezes during the winter, summer ice cverage has steadily been declining ver the past few decades because f climate change. And Arctic ice melting happens faster itself — as ice disappears, it expses mre f the dark blue cean, which absrbs mre heat and leads t mre melting. This prcess has led t the regin warming nearly fur times faster than the rest f the glbe since 1979.
Sea ice decline culd have disastrus cnsequences that extend t the rest f the planet, including sea level rise and disturbance t weather patterns and ecsystems. Animals like plar bears and seals that rely n Arctic ice t survive culd be placed at risk.
32. Accrding t the new research, what will happen cncerning summer sea ice in the Arctic?
A. Its nearly cmplete melting may ccur earlier than expected.
B. Its disappearing nce and fr all will be in less than 10 years.
C. Its drpping will give rise t s-called “blue cean event”.
D. Its melting can be prevented in greenhuse gas emissins.
33. What effrt did the researchers make after figuring ut the prblem f the previus assessments?
A. They abandned the attempt t use mdels.
B. They cllected satellite data ver the past 40 years.
C. They adapted the mdels t be cnsistent with the actual cases.
D. They predicted accurately ice changes in regins f the Arctic.
34. Hw is the paragraph 5 develped?
A. By listing statistics.B. By giving definitins.
C. By making a cmparisn.D. By analyzing cause and effect.
35. What message may the text be trying t cnvey t readers?
A. Pride cmes befre a fall.B. Man prpses, gd dispses.
