The tw pets wrte a bk tgether, ut this mnth, called A Different Distance. It includes almst daily pems frm March 2020 t March 2021. Hacker says she apprached Nair with the idea f writing the bk. As the pets respnded t each ther thrugh petry ver email, Nair says, the prject strengthened her friendship with Hacker. “I was afraid f my brain shutting dwn because chemtherapy was very heavy n me, and the pssibility f maintaining a creative teamwrk was just s precius.”
Nrmally, Hacker wuld like t accmpany Nair t her hspital appintments and take her t lunch afterward, but under lckdwn, they had t settle fr meeting each ther nline. The petry details nt nly f Nair’s illness but f what the pets were eating, reading, r listening t when islated (隔離). T celebrate the spring in Rme, they smetimes eat vignarla. Vignarla is a vegetable stew (燉菜) mixed with all things green and new. It nce marked the start f the new seasn after the hungry gap f late winter. But in a time when frzen peas are available all year rund, the dish’s amazing spring freshness n lnger means as much.
Our mdern fd system has been able t supply us with the freshness f spring all year rund, but befre refrigeratin (冷藏) and mdern methds f agriculture, even butter and eggs were seasnal fds. Hwever, hw ften d yu ever taste smething truly fresh? If yu lk clsely, yu’ll likely ntice much f the prduce at yur lcal supermarket isn’t quite as fresh as yu thught. I recently met a British farmer wh prduces salad greens. He tld me he can taste a huge difference between a leaf that is a day ld and ne that is three days ld and that, by five days, the taste is greatly dulled, despite the leaves still lking green and bright. Because f this, the average shpper is nne the wiser in regard t the freshness f prduce. The same ges fr much f the fd yu buy. The label says “fresh” but what this actually means is smething clser t “nt rtten (腐爛的).”
Our entire fd supply is based n the idea f“fresh” and “keeping things fresh”. But t keep things fresh is a kind f cheat, because smething can nly truly be cnsidered fresh when it has just been taken ut f the grund r has just been cked. The “fresh” fd and drink in ur supermarkets has ften been n a surprisingly lng jurney in the glbal cld chain befre it reaches us. Many refrigerated fds can be labeled as“fresh” even if they are weeks ld, andfruit can still be “fresh” after being irradiated (輻照) r after having received a wax cating.
It may be impssible t measure true freshness in fd, but yu knw it when yu taste it. A cuple f years ag, a friend served me a simple dish f biled ptates that were s fresh and waxy that every ther ptat I’d ever eaten seemed tasteless in my memry.
28. What can we learn frm paragraph 2?
A. Supermarkets nly sell vegetables that are truly fresh.
B. Supermarkets smetimes invite farmers t teach shppers hw t chse fresh prduce.
C. Many peple can’t actually tell whether supermarket prduce is fresh r nt.
D. The British farmer culd find little difference between truly fresh greens and “fresh”greens.
29. Why des the authr say “t keep things fresh is a kind f cheat” in paragraph 3?
A. Because many kinds f drinks are made frm cncentrate.
B. Because it’s impssible fr the mdern fd system t keep fd fresh.
C. Because cnsumers typically aren’t able t tell whether the fd n sale is fresh r nt.
D. Because it ften takes a lng time befre “fresh” fd appear in yur lcal supermarket.
30. Accrding t the authr, what’s the mst reliable way t tell whether fd is fresh r nt?
A. Check it.B. Taste it.C. Smell it.D. Ck it.
31. Hw des the authr start and end the passage?
A. By telling stries f her friends.
B. By intrducing traditinal fds.
C. By shwing examples f truly fresh fd.
D. By sharing her experience f eating truly fresh fd.
D
When we’re trying t decide which cell phne case t buy r which htel rm t bk, we ften rely n the ratings and reviews f thers t help us chse. But research suggests that we tend t use this infrmatin in ways that can actually wrk t ur disadvantage.
“It’s extremely cmmn fr websites and apps t display the average scre f a prduct alng with the number f reviews. Our research suggests that, in sme cases, peple might take this infrmatin and make bad decisins with it,” says researcher Derek Pwell f Stanfrd University, the lead authr n the study.
“We fund that peple were biased (有偏見的)tward chsing t buy mre p ppular prducts and that this smetimes led them t make very pr decisins,” he explains.
As pprtunities t buy prducts nline increase, we can easily get first-hand infrmatin abut users’experiences.
“We wanted t examine hw peple use this wealth f infrmatin when they make decisins, and specifically hw they weigh infrmatin abut ther peple’s decisins,” says Pwell.
Lking at actual prducts available n Amazn.cm, Pwell and his clleagues fund nrelatinship between the number f reviews a prduct had and its average rating. In ther wrds,real-wrld data shw that a large number f reviews are nt a reliable indicatr f a prduct’s quality.
In ne nline experiment, 132 adult participants lked at a series f phne cases presented in pairs. The participants saw an average user rating and ttal number f reviews fr each phne case and expressed which case in each pair they wuld buy.
Acrss varius cmbinatins f average rating and the number f reviews, participants usually chse the ptin with mre reviews. This bias was s strng that they ften preferred the mre-reviewed phne case even when bth f the ptins had lw ratings, effectively chsing the prduct that was, in statistical (統(tǒng)計學(xué)的) terms, mre likely t be lw quality.
32. What des Pwell’s research shw abut peple’s use f ratings and reviews while chsing prducts?
A. It is always helpful fr making smart decisins.
B. It leads t the bias that can result in pr decisin-making.
C. It enables peple t make infrmed decisins.
D. It allws users t chse fine quality prducts ut f pr nes.
33. What is the fcus f the research by Pwell and his clleagues?
A. Hw wealth influences cnsumers’ chice f prducts.
B. Hw past experiences influence cnsumers’ chice f prducts.
C. Hw prduct quality influences cnsumers’ chice f prducts.
D. Hw infrmatin nline influences cnsumers’ chice f prducts.
34. What d the participants’ chices in the experiment shw?
A. They shw a preference fr higher-priced gds.
B. They balance quality and quantity f reviews well.
C. They shw a strng bias tward less-reviewed ptins.
D. They ften chse mre-reviewed prducts even with lw ratings.
35. What des the authr think f using reviews and ratings fr buying prducts?
A. It is a reasnable methd.B. It is pssibly misleading.
C. It is a future mainstream trend.D. It is biased against quality prducts.
