What is it called in different times?
在我國(guó)有一種傳統(tǒng)的說(shuō)法，認(rèn)為毛筆是秦時(shí)蒙恬創(chuàng)造的，秦時(shí)使用兔毫竹管而有“筆”的名稱(chēng)。到了漢代，毛筆的制作進(jìn)入了一個(gè)相對(duì)成熟的時(shí)期，當(dāng)古埃及的蘆管筆，歐洲的羽毛筆退出了歷史的舞臺(tái)時(shí)，中國(guó)的毛筆卻至今不衰，顯示出強(qiáng)大的生命力。

羽毛筆出現(xiàn)在公元600年左右，在大約公元700年時(shí)普及，當(dāng)時(shí)，西方還沒(méi)有發(fā)明出金屬筆尖的沾水筆、鋼筆和圓珠筆，羽毛筆成為了主要的書(shū)寫(xiě)工具。
筆的英文“PEN”，來(lái)源于拉丁文Penna或者Pinna，Penna就是羽毛的意思，這個(gè)詞后來(lái)被古法語(yǔ)吸收，演變?yōu)镻enne，也是羽毛的意思。古法語(yǔ)開(kāi)始對(duì)英語(yǔ)產(chǎn)生深遠(yuǎn)的影響，在之后的某一時(shí)期開(kāi)始英語(yǔ)就借用古法語(yǔ)penne，用pen一詞來(lái)指代羽毛筆這類(lèi)書(shū)寫(xiě)工具。
