The trail we fllwed grew narrwer and steeper. At arund 9 a.m. , we reached an ice step. I vlunteered t g first. I placed my left ft n it.

In an instant, I fell backward, rlling dwn the muntain as if I were a character in a vide game. After a few secnds, I came t a stp n a shallw slpe just abve the Devil’s Kitchen. I’d fallen 600 feet. My clthes were trn int small pieces, my helmet was brken, and my face was bldied frm cuts and scratches. Frtunately, fr the mst part, I was fine, except that I was suffering frm a sharp, great pain in my left leg.
