A research paper recently reprted that the Chinese paddlefish (中華鱘)—ne f the wrld’s largest freshwater fish—has been declared extinct.
Scientists say the Chinese paddlefish and its clse relatives have been arund fr at least 200 millin years.The species,reaching up t seven meters in length,survived unimaginable changes,such as the mass extinctin that killed the dinsaurs.But there’s ne phenmenn this ancient species,smetimes called the “panda f the Yangtze”,culd nt survive humans.
Their huge size and plentiful flesh made them a ppular target fr fishermen and a welcme additin t inner tables in China.In the 1970s,25 tns f paddlefish were harvested per year n average.
But the cnstructin f the Gezhuba Dam n the Yangtze frever changed the Yangtze River habitat f paddlefish,because it was cnstructed withut a fish ladder r sideway and cut ff the paddlefish frm their nly breeding (繁殖) grunds upstream.Ppulatins f the fish cntinued t decrease after the cmpletin f the dam in 1981,but nbdy had yet figured ut hw terrible the situatin was.As is ften the case,there can be a significant delay between majr disturbances and their cnsequence.The researchers say the fish had becme functinally extinct by 1993,meaning there were nt enugh fish t meaningfully reprduce.
Ms Pan is an cean expert with Greenpeace East Asia.She tld The Assciated Press the extinctin f the Chinese paddlefish was “a huge lss” fr nature.She said the develpment cnfirms that the Yangtze River is experiencing majr envirnmental damage.
