My mther and I dn’t speak the same language. Her English is nt gd, and my Mandarin stpped at the picture-bk level n the day I started kindergarten in Califrnia, as I realized that the few English wrds I knew weren’t ging t get me very far. I immersed (沉浸) myself in strange grammar and new vcabulary. As my mther tngue withered (逐漸淡去) in my mind, English allwed me t explain my persnhd here and silence the narrative that I was just a shy, dd Asian.
My wish t write, hwever, made me unintelligible t my mther. She culdn’t understand why I’d spil ther better chances. I’d tried t cmmunicate with her in Chinese, searching my mind fr sentences: Hw culd I describe my gratitude fr a path t self-fulfillment when all I culd say was “kai xin” r “happy”? Withut the wrds t bridge the gap between ur wrldviews, ur dissatisfactin and wrry turned int stubbrnness.
I landed a day jb editing a design magazine but wrked n my nvel in my ff-hurs. As its main characters, Marissa and Kathleen’s mther-daughter relatinship was similar t my wn, trubled and split by cultural differences—thugh always revived by lve. But the bk is in English, s my mm wn’t be able t read it.
Writing the bk gave me a reasn t mine fr details abut my family. I’d spent s much f my adlescence shedding (擺脫) my backgrund that when I reached adulthd, I became interested in ur histry. I started asking questins, hping t find a new understanding f us.
Her answers were mixed with jyful memries, like the pleasant smell f the flwers my mther wuld pin t her bluse, r the hubbub(喧鬧)f visiting her cusins in the cuntryside. As her wrld became clearer t me, I came clser t knwing wh she is.
When I shwed my mther a cpy, she nticed her Chinese name in the acknwledgments and said in Mandarin with a shaking vice, “Nw I knw yu truly lve me.” I wish it hadn’t taken this lng t find a way t tell her. She may nt understand it wrd fr wrd, but I knw she gets the message.

Frm camping t Frisbee (飛盤(pán)游戲), China’s urban residents are always n the lkut fr the next utdr activity in fashin. Over the last few mnths, farming vegetables has becme the mst ppular ne as mre and mre peple seek t break away frm urban rutines fr a shrt break back with nature.
Cmpletely different frm traditinal farming, the pieces f land are divided int smaller parts s they can be rented ut t families with kids, the elderly, and white-cllar residents. They are usually lcated n the suburbs f cities, and prmise ptential tenants(租戶)hurs f peaceful gardening and beautiful scenery.
As their wn “l(fā)andlrds,” inexperienced city residents get t experience the whle prcess—frm swing vegetable seeds and watering them t eventually harvesting the fruits f their labr. Shanghai resident Tai Xin rented a 100-square-meter plt f land n Shanghai’s suburbs that csts 1,000 yuan annually. She says, “I initially thught my seven-year-ld sn wuld be able t better understand crps, planting, picking, and agricultural science.” But her parents, wh have been helping with babysitting, are nw als engaged n the “farm”. “We’re pleased t be here,” she added. Tai says she visits the plt f land, arund tw kilmeters away frm her hme, nce in a while but nly n weekends. She spends a cuple f hurs watering the crps, remving weeds, and smetimes just rganizing a picnic with her family.
But like ther utdr activities, vegetable gardening, as an emerging trend, is nt withut its cmplicatins. Mst f the land fr such vegetable gardens are agricultural tracts (大片土地) rented frm the lcal gvernment, says Zhang Ling, wh perates the Shanghai Shanxi Fruit &Vegetable Cperative.
“The regulatr wants t keep track f the kind f vegetables planted as well as the yield t guarantee the city’s fd supply,” says Zhang. “It’s very difficult fr us t track that since ur custmers are mstly amateur farmers and they culd be very spntaneus(自發(fā)的)in what they want t plant. A failure t meet the regulatry requirements, hwever, may lead t the land rental cntract being canceled.”

Humans have sailed the ceans’ surfaces fr thusands f years, but their depths remain effectively uncharted. Only abut a quarter f the seaflr has been mapped at high reslutin (清晰度). Maps f mst regins display nly estimated depths and ften miss entire underwater muntains r canyns (峽谷). S a grup f researchers have turned t sme deep-diving experts: Elephant Seals and Weddell Seals. Scientists have been placing trackers n these blubber y marine mammals arund Antarctica fr years, gathering data n cean temperature and salinity (鹽度).
Fr a new study, the researchers cmpared these dives’ lcatin and depth data with sme f the less detailed seaflr maps. They sptted places where the seals dve deeper than shuld have been pssible accrding t the maps.
In eastern Antarctica’s Vincennes Bay, the diving seals helped the scientists find a large, hidden underwater canyn suddenly descending (下降) t depths f mre than a mile. “The seals discvered the canyn, and the ship cnfirmed it,” says Clive McMahn, a researcher at the Integrated Marine Observing System in Australia and a c-authr f the new study.
But seals can’t map the entire cean flr. The trackers used in the study culd pinpint (為……準(zhǔn)確定位) a seal’s gegraphical lcatin nly within abut 1.5 miles, which allws fr useful but nt exactly high-reslutin data. Plus, because the seals dn’t always dive t the bttm f the cean, they can reveal nly where the bttm is deeper than in existing maps — nt shallwer. McMahn ntes that scientists culd imprve n these data by using mre precise GPS trackers and analyzing the seals’ diving patterns t determine whether they have reached the seaflr r simply stpped descending.
The current seal-dive data can still be valuable fr an imprtant task, says Anna W?hlin, an ceangrapher at the University f Gthenburg in Sweden. The deep cean arund Antarctica is warmer than the extremely cld waters at the surface, and seaflr canyns can allw that warmer water t flw t the ice alng the cntinent’s cast, W?hlin explains. T predict hw Antarctica’s ice will melt, scientists will need t knw where thse canyns are and hw deep they g.
12. What’s the initial functin f the device carried by the seals?
A. Cllecting data abut seawater.
B. Filming the images f the seaflr.
C. Recrding the seals’ travelling rutes.
D. Leading researchers t sme remte areas.
13. What des the new study’s discvery prve?
A. It is impssible t fully uncver the secrets f the sea.
B. The existing depth estimates fr the sea are inaccurate.
C. Seals’ ability t dive is wrth further scientific studies.
D. It is urgent fr scientists t map detailed seaflr maps.
14. What des paragraph 4 mainly talk abut?
A The creative methds adpted in the study.
B. Majr technical challenges faced by scientists.
C. New research directins inspired by the study.
D. The shrtcmings f the appraches t the study.
15. Which f the fllwing will Anna W?hlin mst prbably agree with?
A. The new study is ptentially beneficial t ther scientific fields.
B. The deep waters f Antarctica are clder than the surface waters.
C. Seaflr canyns slw dwn the speed f ice melting in Antarctica.
D. The seal-dive practice is valuable fr mapping the entire cean flr.
