When I was a child, I always wanted t be a superher. I wanted t save the wrld and make everyne happy. But I knew that I’d need superpwers t make my dreams cme true. S I used t embark n these imaginary jurneys t find intergalactic (星系之間的) bjects frm planet Kryptn, but didn’t yield much result. When I grew up and realized that science fictin was nt a gd surce fr superpwers, I decided instead t embark n a jurney f real science, t find a mre useful truth. I started my jurney in Califrnia, with a UC Berkeley 30-year lngitudinal study that examined the phts f students in an ld yearbk, and tried t measure their success and well-being thrughut their life.
By measuring the students’ smiles, researchers were able t predict hw fulfilling and lng-lasting a subject’s marriage wuld be, hw well she wuld scre n standardized tests f well-being, and hw inspiring she wuld be t thers.
Anther aha! mment came frm a 2010 Wayne State University span research prject that lked int pre-1950s baseball cards f Majr League players. The researchers fund that the span f a player’s smile culd actually assist t predict the span f his life. Players wh didn’t smile in their pictures lived an average f nly 72.9 years, while players with beaming smiles lived an average f almst 80 years.
British researchers fund that ne smile can generate the same level f brain stimulatin as up t 2,000 bars f chclate. Wait—The same study fund that smiling is as stimulating as receiving up t £16,000 in cash. That’s like $25,000 a smile. It’s nt bad. And think abut it this way: 25,000 times 400—children smile as many as 400 times per day—quite a few kids ut there feel like Mark Zuckerberg every day.

Peple wh have truble walking r mving arund ften have a hard time enjying the beach. But hundreds f beaches in Greece nw ffer a new way fr peple in wheelchairs t get int the water by themselves. It’s called Seatrac.

The chair is perated by remte cntrl. When the persn is ready t get ut f the water, the Seatrac system brings the chair back t the tp f the ramp. It’s even pssible t take a shwer in the Seatrac chair after ging fr a swim.
Seatrac was invented and develped in Greece. The idea fr it came when ne f the inventrs, Ignatis Ftiu, was talking with a friend wh used a wheelchair. The friend said he enjyed the sea, but didn’t like having t be carried int the cean as if he were a “sack f ptates”. Mr. Ftiu realized that there must be a way t make it easier fr wheelchair users t enjy the water. He wrked with his partner and a prfessr at a Greek university t design the system. In time, they frmed a cmpany called TOBEA t build and sell the systems.
The cmpany wrked hard t make the system simple t put in place and easy t run. A wden walkway allws wheelchair users t reach the Seatrac. The system is slar pwered and can cntinue t run even if the electricity ges ut. The Scatrac system can easily be packed up and stred when swimming seasn ends.

Can yu imagine getting a tth pulled ut r ther majr dental prcedures withut pain-killer? A scientist clleague f mine used a “fcus in” technique instead f requesting pain-killer at the dentist. Each time the dentist tuched the tth, my clleague felt bubbles f jy, and this lasted until the dentist interrupted by asking, “Why are yu smiling?”
A fair questin at this pint is why anyne wuld want t be fully aware f intense r painful prcedures. But what may sund like a punishing chice—t directly face hurt r suffering—may in sme instances be beneficial. A stream f scientific articles suggests that there are benefits in turning tward discmfrt r negative emtins with acceptance. In additin, all f us can gain frm finding ways t cpe with stress and suffering—particularly when larger circumstances are beynd ur cntrl. As a researcher wh has studied meditatin (冥想) fr mre than 20 years, I believe that the develpment f calmness, a central element f certain mindfulness meditatin practices, can help. I’m nt advcating fr peple t put themselves in dangerus r painful psitins. But when we push urselves int challenging r cnfusing situatins, much like trainers wh push athletes just past their cmfrt zne t make gains, learning ften happens. Indeed, a 2022 study with mre than 2,000 peple demnstrated that thse participants wh were publicly encuraged t push themselves int awkward, uncmfrtable situatins—including taking classes t bst self-cnfidence and reading abut ppsing viewpints—later reprted the greatest degree f persnal grwth.
My wn research indicates that meditatin prvides an ideal way t practice turning tward discmfrt—particularly when it trains up ne’s calm mind. Peple wh reprted higher levels f calmness reprted less psychlgical distress (困擾).
Right nw peple are hurting fr many reasns and lking fr ways t cpe. Withut questin, there are many imprtant steps we need t take cllectively t respnd t these challenges. But we can each build ur ability t recver n a persnal level as well by cultivating greater acceptance f ur experience—gd r bad, painful r pleasant—in the present mment.

C. It leads t persnal grwth.D. It prmtes a sense f calmness.
34. What is the authr’s view n putting neself in dangerus r painful psitins?
A. The authr encurages it as a way t imprve fitness.
B. The authr discurages it due t its ptential harm.
C. The authr believes it is necessary fr persnal grwth.
D. The authr recmmends it t thse cnfused trainers.
