The wrldwide 20th century “Green Revlutin”, which saw huge year-by-year increases in glbal grain yields (產(chǎn)量), was fueled by the develpment in the 1960s f new high-yielding dwarfed (矮小) varieties knwn as Green Revlutin Varieties (GRVs).
These dwarfed GRVs are cmmn all ver the wrld in tday’s wheat and rice crps. Because they are dwarfed, with shrt stems, GRVs devte relatively mre resurces than tall plants t the grwth f grains rather than stems, and are less likely t suffer yield lsses frm wind and rain damage. Hwever, the grwth f GRVs requires farmers t use large amunts f nitrgen fertilizers (氮肥) in their fields. These fertilizers are cstly t farmers and cause extensive damage t the natural envirnment. The develpment f new GRVs cmbining high yields with reduced fertilizer requirements is thus a glbal agricultural gal.
Researchers at the University f Oxfrd and the Chinese Academy f Science have discvered fr the first time a gene that can help reach the gal. Cmparing 36 different dwarfed rice varieties, the researchers identified a nvel natural gene that helps increase the rate at which plants make use f nitrgen frm the sil. This gene, called GRF4, can increase the amunt f a prtein (蛋白質(zhì)) in plant cells. GRF4 is actually a prmter that encurages the activity f ther genes—genes that prmte nitrgen uptake (攝入). Prfessr Harberd said, “Increasing GRF4 levels culd cntribute t an increase in the grain yields f GRVs, especially at lw fertilizer input levels.”
The researchers say the latest rice variety cntaining GRVs shuld nw becme a majr target fr farmers in increasing crp yields and fertilizer use efficiency with the aim f achieving the glbal grain yield increases necessary t feed a grwing wrld ppulatin at a reduced envirnmental cst. It is very urgent at the mment.
Prfessr Harberd added, “This study is an example f hw studying fundamental science bjectives can lead rapidly t ptential slutins t glbal challenges. It shws hw the discvery can enable chances fr fd security and future new green revlutins.”
1. What can we knw abut dwarfed GRVs?
A. They have higher yield and taller stems.B. They are a “duble-edged swrd”.
C. They are envirnmentally friendly.D. They can be easily affected by weather.
2. What des “the gal” in Paragraph 3 refer t?
A. Increasing the rate f nitrgen use.B. Prducing cheaper nitrgen fertilizers.
C. Using fewer fertilizers t prduce mre grains.D. Finding a gene t slve agricultural prblems.
3. What can GRV directly d?
A. It prmtes ther genes’ activity.B. It increases the utput f crps.
C. It takes in nitrgen frm the sil.D. It lwers fertilizer input levels.

The Impssible Burger has the same nutritin as beef, withut the unhealthy parts. In fact, taste, nutritin and reducing climate change were all equally imprtant when creating the burger.
Cws are actually terrible fr the envirnment. They need lts f land and water, and they create greenhuse gases. Hwever, an Impssible Burger uses 95% less land, 75% less water, and creates 85-87% less greenhuse gases than a beef burger.
That's why this burger was made fr meat lvers. The gal is fr them t eat less meat in rder t prtect envirnment. At the same time they can still eat delicius burgers that taste like real meat.

A study f English learning prblems was carried ut amng a ttal f 106 freign students. It shws that mst students cnsidered understanding spken English t be their biggest prblem n arrival. This was fllwed by speaking. Writing increased as a prblem as students discvered difficulties in writing papers that they were nw expected t hand in. Reading remained as a significant (顯著的) prblem.
