It helped that in the end I was accepted int ne f the ther prgrammes I was als excited abut.

We typically think f ur sense f hearing as being cncerned with sunds. But silence, whatever it is, is nt a sund. Then what is it that we hear when we hear nthing at all? Are we detecting silence? Or are we just hearing nthing and interpreting that absence f sund as silence? A team f researchers at Jhns Hpkins may have fund the answers t these questins.

Then they replaced the sunds in the illusin with silences, rewrking it int what they called the ne-silence-is-mre illusin. They used sunds f restaurants, busy marketplaces, trains r playgrunds, and integrated mments f silence int them fr listeners t cmpare. In the silence-based illusin, a lng silence was perceived as being lnger than the ttal f tw shrter silences.
Other tests placed silence in different cntexts t prduce mre auditry illusins. In every case they tested, the illusins that scientists thught culd nly be triggered with sunds wrked just as well when the sunds were replaced by silences. “If yu can get the same illusins with silences as yu get with sunds, that may be evidence that nthing is als smething yu can hear.” said Chaz Firestne, an authr f the study.

由第一段“Belw is a screensht f bk review n a bestseller My Life n Craigslist.
根據(jù)第一段“My heart raced when I saw the email sender’s name. The email started ff: “Dear Mr Green, thank yu fr yur interest” and “the review prcess tk lnger than expected.” It ended with “We are srry t infrm yu…”and my visin blurred (模糊). 故選A。
根據(jù)第三段“S I was shcked when, nt lng after the email, Prfessr Mary Devn, wh was running the prgramme, invited me t bserve the wrk being dne in her lab. I jumped at the chance, and a few weeks later I was equally shcked—and verjyed—when she invited me t talk with her abut ptential prjects I culd pursue in her lab. What she prpsed didn’t seem as exciting as the riginal prject I had applied t, but I was ging t give it my all.
根據(jù)第四段“I fund myself wrking with a rbtics prfessr n techniques fr cllecting data frm the desert remtely. That prject, which I culd cmplete frm my sfa instead f in the burning heat f the desert, nt nly survived the lckdwn but wrked where traditinal methds didn’t. In the end, I had a new scientific interest t pursue.
根據(jù)最后一段“Rather than setting plans in stne, I’ve learned that smetimes I need t take the pprtunities that are ffered, even if they dn’t sund perfect at the time, and make the mst f them.
根據(jù)第一段第二句“These students can have truble grasping meanings f numerical symbls r understanding spatial prcessing such as the rtatin(旋轉(zhuǎn)) f an bject in their mind.(這些學(xué)生可能在掌握數(shù)字符號(hào)的含義或理解空間處理方面有困難,比如在他們的腦海中物體的旋轉(zhuǎn))”可知,“數(shù)盲癥”患者更難應(yīng)對(duì)抽象數(shù)學(xué)問題。故選D。
根據(jù)第三段最后一句“Research n the disrder picked up in the 1990s with the widespread use f MRI technlgy, but it’s still nt widely understd, accrding t advcates.(20世紀(jì)90年代,隨著核磁共振技術(shù)廣泛使用,對(duì)這種疾病的研究開始興起,但據(jù)倡導(dǎo)者說,它仍然沒有被廣泛理解)”可知,隨著技術(shù)的應(yīng)用,該研究得以開始。故選A。
根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段中“Grwing up with dyscalculia greatly affected myself-wrth and nt feeling like I am enugh(患有計(jì)算障礙的成長過程極大地影響了我的自我價(jià)值感,讓我覺得自己不夠好)”可知,患有計(jì)算障礙的成長極大地影響了Cladek的自我價(jià)值,總感覺自己不夠好。
根據(jù)第一段“Students with dyscalculia experience difficulty in mathematics and number-based learning. These students can have truble grasping meanings f numerical symbls r understanding spatial prcessing such as the rtatin(旋轉(zhuǎn)) f an bject in their mind.(有計(jì)算障礙的學(xué)生在數(shù)學(xué)和基于數(shù)字的學(xué)習(xí)方面有困難。
由文章第一段“But silence, whatever it is, is nt a sund. Then what is it that we hear when we hear nthing at all? Are we detecting silence? Or are we just hearing nthing and interpreting that absence f sund as silence? A team f researchers at Jhns Hpkins may have fund the answers t these questins.
由文章第二段“The scientists tested 1,000 participants with a series f auditry illusins (聽覺錯(cuò)黨).The first test cmpared a single lnger sund with tw shrter sunds that added up t the same amunt f time as the lnger ne. But when peple listened t them, they perceived the single sund as lasting lnger.
由文章第四段“Other tests placed silence in different cntexts t prduce mre auditry illusins. In every case they tested, the illusins that scientists thught culd nly be triggered with sunds wrked just as well when the sunds were replaced by silences.
由文章第三段“Then they replaced the sunds in the illusin with silences, rewrking it int what they called the ne-silence-is-mre illusin. They used sunds f restaurants, busy marketplaces, trains r playgrunds, and integrated mments f silence int them fr listeners t cmpare. In the silence-based illusin,a lng silence was perceived as being lnger than the ttal f tw shrter silences.
